AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, January 18. Again I have to make the plaint that either all the world, and his wife are still away on their holidays, or that the sudden arrival of real summer weather has made everyone lazy, for literally there is nothing going on—several events are ponding, but for the last week I have, not a thing to report. We went to the theatre on the last two nights of the season, to see if there were any new frocks or faces in the dress circle and stalls. The play, or, rather, the variety entertainment, was not up to previous performances, and I thought May Beatty over did the matter. of posing and attitudinising in her songs. Amongst those present I noticed: Mrs. Bloomfield was in a becoming black evening gown; Miss George. black satin, with white net lace berthe; Miss Zoe George looked charming in a dainty white gown; Miss Ireland, black skirt and pretty eiel blue silk blouse, with transparent cream lace Victorian yoke; Miss Jennie Ireland, black, with Paris net yoke beautifully embroidered in green; Mies Ida Thompson, pastel blue crepe de chine, trimmed with Paris lace and brown fur; Mrs. Lawrence, black skirt, with pretty tucked white silk blouse, finished with lace yoke; Miss Ida Percival, white silk blouse, with black skirt; Miss Eva Percival, pretty silk blouse, with deep ecru lace yoke, black skirt; Miss Gwennie Hill was prettily gowned in white; Mrs. J. M. Brigham, rich black silk gown; Mrs. Markham, pretty white silk, with ficelle lace yoke; Mrs. Hope Lewis wore ecru net evening dress over shimmering satin; Miss Eileen Lewis, black evening frock, with cream lace motifs bestrewn over lace berthe; Mrs. ,1. Hardie Neil, white tucked silk gown; Mrs. R. M. Watt, white silk blouse, with touches of blue, and grey chailie skirt: Mrs. Louis Myers, black satin evening gown, handsomely trimmed with white silk applique; Miss Kekwick, dove grey silk evening gown, wreathlet of leaves on eniffure; Miss Ivy Buddle, black evening frock and becoming grey cloak; Mrs. M. 11. Laird, dainty light gown; Misses Dawson wore cream silk frocks. FANCY DRESS BALL AT WAIHEKE. The customary quietude of Ardr Man-o-war Buy, Uatheke, gave place, on January 7th, lo unwonted gaiety, the occasion being the fancy dress ball in connection with the extensive picnic camp of Mr R. P. Gibbons, the wellknown sawmill owner of Kopu and Ilikurangi. Tho hall attached to the school was daily decorated, not only with bush foliage, but also flowers from Mr Fleming’s prettily laid out gardens. Among the costumes Worn the most noticeable were: Miss Hallie Gibbons as Florence Nightingale; Miss Driscoll, of Woodville,

Naney Lee; Miss Guthrie as Maggie Papakura; Miss Jeanie Gibbons, Josh of Arc; Miss A. H. Jones, of Napier, Powder and Patches; Miss Naomi Gibbons, Spanish Dancer; Miss Ella Gillespie, lauly Betty; Miss Marsden as Red, White and Blue; Mias Lottie Barton, Hamilton, Girl Graduate; Miss Eileen Gibbons, Flower Girl; Mias Belle Gibbons, Thames, Red Cross Nurse; Miss H. Jones, Neapolitan Lady; Mias Lena Gibbons, Sophia, the Guide; Miss Lottie Vickerman, Simplicity: Miss D.
