CHRISTCHURCH.

Dear Bee, December 21. A garden fete and sale of work for the Durham-street Wesleyan Church was held in the grounds of Mr J. G. Smith at “Riverlaw,” Opawa, where a pleasant day’s outing was spent by a large number of people. A cricket match was played between teams of Christ’s College present ami past, resulting in favour of the latter. Among those looking on were Mr and Miss Moreland, Mi- and Mrs G. Harper. Mr and Miss Merton, Mrs and Miss Beeves, Dr. and Mrs Acland, Mrs Vernon, Mrs and Miss Hill, Professor and Mrs Blunt, Professor and Mrs Cook, Mr and Mrs G. Harris, Mr, Mrs and Misses Anderson, Mr and Mrs Harman, the Misses Cotlerill, Harley, Russell. Campbell, Gosaet, Wilson, and many others. Mrs Andrew Anderson had a very pleasant afternoon on Monday at her residence, “Alerehison,” Opawa. The garden and grounds were looking very fresh and pretty, and some enjoyable tennis was played. Among those present were Mrs and Misses Denniston, Mrs and Miss Finch, Mrs and Miss Wilding. Mrs and Misses Prins, Mrs and Miss Mills, the Misses Lewin, Devcnish-Meares, Burns, Merton. AL Anderson, Molyneux, Nicholls, Messrs Ollivier, Williams, Jameson, anil some of the officers from H.M.s. Psyche.

An interesting croquet tournament was brought to a close this week. The final was played at Mrs Mcßride’s on Thursday between Mrs C. IL Croxton and Mrs .1. W. Wood, Mrs W. Stringer and Mrs Coverdale, the two latter winning and carrying off pretty china cups and saucers. Among the onlookers were Mrs I.ouisson. Mrs Levi (Wellington), Mrs Guthrie Moore. MrsT. Garrard. Mrs Kohn, Mrs Morton Anderson. Mrs F. W. Thompson. Mrs Appleby. Mrs W. Ollivier. Mrs F. Graham. Mrs G. Bennett, and Miss .Morris.

Union took place on the 20th, and a proof of his ]a>pularity was shown in the immense audience gathered to bid him good-bye, the Canterbury Hall being packed. A very handsome address was presented to Mr Wallace by Mr A. Kaye, as Mr Justice Deniston, president, could not be present, and also a beautifully engraved gold watch with chain. These were from the two societies, the Musical Union and Liedertafel, both of which Mr Wallace has conducted for some sixteen years Among the large audience were Mrs and Misses Denniston, Mr, Mrs and Miss Izard, Mr W. D. and Misses DevenishAlcarcs, Mr and Mrs A. Kaye. Mrs A. Elworthy (Pareora), Misses Julius, Dr. and Airs Talbot, Dr. and Mrs Manning, Mr and Sirs I. Gibbs. Mrs F. SI. Wallace, .Messrs F. and A. Parsons, Mr and Mrs W. and Misses M ood, Mr and Misses BiggWither, Mrs and Miss Graham, Mrs G. Bennett. Mr and Mrs Appleby, Mr and Mrs Kohn, Mr and Mrs Seed, Mr and Mrs Roper, Colonel and Airs Gordon, Airs Guthrie Aloore, Airs G. and Aliss Alartin. Aliss Nora Campbell had a gathering of girl friends at Avonside to welcome home Aliss Anderson and Aliss Russell, and they all had a great time among the cherry trees, the delicious fruit being more attractive than afternoon tea and cake or croquet. Among those present were Alisses Anderson, Russell, Denniston, Julius, Aloore, Rutherford, Wilkin, Houlton, Cook, Sanders, Afathias, Inman, Nicholls, Alerton, Hill, Humphries and Laurie. I hear of several camping-out parties for Christmas. Air and Airs Lawrence and family, with Air and Airs Day and several more, are going to Lake Ellesmere; Dr. and Airs J. C. Palmer intend camping out. Airs Wilkin is having a largo party of friends at Mount Hutt, and Air and Airs Alillton are having a numerous party at Oxford. Alotor cars are still on the increase in Christchurch. Air John Anderson and Air Ranald Alacdonald have each brought a ear out from England with them.
