Mr. J. Finlayson, of Devonport, has rejoined the Talune as second engineer. Miss Coates is paying her annual visit to friends and relations in Auckland. Mr. George Fenwick, of Napier, arrived in Auckland last week, and went on to Te Arolia.

Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Allen and daughter’s arrived from Sydney in the mail Steamer last week.

Mr. L. H. Darlot, the well-known Australasian sporting man, arrived in Auckland last week from Sydney. Mr. Gledhow, a well-known Napier business man, is spending a short holiday in Auckland. The Misses Ada and Kathleen Hoadley have returned to Napier after a six months’ visit to England and Ireland. Mr. Capleri, who has been for a trip to Rotorua with bis daughter, has returned to his home in Hawera.

Miss Riley is back in Wellington from her trip to Australia, which has lasted some months.

Miss Elsie Tennant, of Marton, has returned to her home after a visit to Wanganui.

Miss Craig, sister of Mr J. Jt Craig, Auckland, was married last week to Captain Hood, harbourmaster at New Plymouth, and formerly of the steamers Westralia and Anglian. The flags on the local shipping offices and ships were Mown in honour of the event. The condition of the Hon. Sir A. J. Cadman, Speaker of the Upper House, is causing his relatives and friends grave anxiety. He is lying ill at his house at Avondale, and it is stated that an operation may be necessary. The exact nature of his illness is not yet diagnosed.

Mr J- H. O’Neil, chairman of the Waitemata County’ Council, has returned from his trip abroad and resumed duties as a member of the Council last week. While away he devoted a good deal of attention to the methods adopted by other municipal bodies in the different parts which he visited.

Mrs Elworthy and Mr and Mrs Williamson are expected back from England shortly, also Mr and Mrs J. H. Beswick, so our residents are returning by degrees (writes our Christchurch correspondent). Mr and Mrs Henry Wood and family (Christchurch) are going to spend Christmas at Mount Grey. They will not return to their house at Avonside for some months, as they are making extensive alterations.

Amongst the Gisborne people who have booked for the Sounds trip are Mr and Mrs W. D. Lysnar, Mr and Mrs W. Barker, Mr F. Barker, Mr and Mrs A. F. Kennedy, Mr Geoffrey McLean, and Miss McLean. Mr John, Mrs, and Miss Anderson are back in Christchurch from England. Miss Anderson has been away about two years, preceding her father and mother by about a year. Miss B. Russell journeyed out with them after some travel in England and abroad.

On Saturday week at the Grand Hotel, Auckland, a few’ friends of Mr and Mrs T. Martin, who have successfully’ managed the house for some years, and are now leaving it. presented them with a handsome solid silver engraved epergne. The staff of the hotel also made a presentation to Mr and Mrs Martin of a handsome silver-mounted dressing-case and a chatelaine bag, both bearing the recipient’s initials in silver.

Miss G. E. Bonham, who is a wellknown Alpine climber, has arrived in New Zealand, with the intention of ascending Aorangi and other peaks in the Southern Alps. The attempt on Aorangi will be made about January next, and Miss Bonham has brought a full Alpine equipment with her for the purpose. She has already achieved some fame in her pioneer climbing in the Canadian Rockies, and has “done - ’ most of the Swiss Alps.

Miss Violet Mclntosh, daughter of Mr G. W. Mclntosh, manager of the National Bank, Blenheim, has received notice that she lias won the gold medal for New Zealand awarded by the Royal Academy of Munic. Miss Alclntosli obtained 146 marks out of a possible 150 —the highest number ever gained in the Associated Board’s colonial tests.

Mr and Mrs F. Al. Wallace are leaving Christchurch to reside with their sons on the North Island. The musical circle is staggered at the blow, but Mr Wallace’s health.compels him to relinquish all professional work, and we can only hope the complete rest will soon restore him and perhaps make him eager for the fray again (writes our correspondent).

A very interesting social was given by the ehoir of Bay Held Methodist Church last week, to say good-bye to Miss

Carter, one of’ the choir, who is leaving to reside in New Plymouth. During the evening several musical items were rendered, and short addresses given. Mr Norgrovc, on behalf of the ehoir, presented Miss Carter with a handsome gold brooch, and also a birthday book. Miss Carter feelingly thanked the choir for the beautiful gift. Refreshments were partaken of at the close.

The Right Rev. O. Hadfield, formerly Bishop of Wellington and Primate of New Zealand, died at Martop on Sunday week. Deceased was 89 years of age, and was born on the Isle of Wight. He matriculated at Pembroke College, Oxford, in 1832, but was obliged to leave the university on the ground of illhealth. He proceeded to Australia, and while holding deacon’s orders came to New Zealand in 1338, volunteering as * missionary to Otaki.- Ho was admitted as a priest, and was appointed Archdeacon by Bishop Sclwyn, remaining at Otaki to 1865. In October, 1870, he succeeded to the Bishopric of Wellington, and in 1889, when Bishop Harper retired from the Primacy, was elected to th* position. He retired to private life » n 1898.
