SATURDAY’S RACING AT ELLERSLIE The third day’s racing at Ellerslie was, from a feminine standpoint, betwixt ami between, so to say. It was, that is, a vast improvement on the miserable firat day, but could not approach the gathering of King’s Birthday. The wind was very high, but on the stand it was not so much not’ccd. The attendance of ladies was fair, and there were again avsat very prstty ppnTig toilettes, blue being the favourite colour, as one male connoisseur in sueh matters blandly pointed out to me. Many, of course, wore the Fame dresses as on \\ ednesday. The raving was capital, but the carelessness of the authorities in allowing the jockeys to start in their wrong colours again caused much grumbling, and seriously detracted from one’s pleasure in the sport. Again, some of the colours are altogether too similar, and render it impossible to distinguish riders at any distance—a yellow sash and an orange sash on an allblack coat are ; 'mpos y ible to differentiate at a coup’e of hundred yards. Thanks to the competition by the trams the railway arrangements were less disgracefully inadequate fan usual, and on the course itself tin* catering, music, and general incidentals were quite satisfactory, and up to the ifiark. The flower beds near the stand do credit to the caretaker. They are really pretty, and lie deserves more than a word of praise. By the way, why not have baskets round the lawn and totalizator for torn tickets and waste as they have at Flemington? People would soon drop into the decency of using them, mid much unsightliness would be avoided. Amongst those who were present were Mrs George Bloomfield wore a pretty pale pink and white lozenge spotted delaine gown, large black picture hat: Mrs Pratt (Melbourne) was wearing a smart white , serge costume, relieved with touches of black.
