TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH.

(By Telegraph —Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. T hear very good accounts from Dunedin of Red Gauntlet. St. Denis is also said to lie coming back to form, and the unperformed Multiform colt Ouidaform Is making satisfactory progress'. I understand ®lso that Arlsa has wintered satisfactorily. Mr -Henrys seems to have made an excellent handicap for the Stewards' Stakes. ,Without pitchforking anything lu he has given most of the candidates o' capital ■chance, with the result that he Las complicated the task of picking the winner, Brilliant horse as Achilles Is, he may find It a difficult matter to concede the enormous weights he is asked to give some of the horses further down the list. Probably he will be start&R in the New Zealand Cup instead. Machine Gun is reported to be extremely we-H, and this being the case he 'Stands a capital chance of reneatlug his victory of last year. Martian,* I take It, will start for the Cun, but I presume that lied Gauntlet may be regarded as a certain starter, and. fit and well, he is bound to rim prominently. Vladimir is not overweighted. Of those below him 1 like Gdlden Lily, Rubla, Nightfall, Zetland, 4 rlehton, and Alisa. Mr Stead holds a very strong hand. Ho has no less than seven engaged, hud any one of the number may be capable of winning.

Although the enjoyment of the Oholca hud Eyretoil Jockey dub's annual race meeting on Thursday was marred bv a boisterous north-east gale, the attendance, which included a strong contingent from town, was large, the racing was Interesting, and the totnlisator turnover exceeded last year s by £2.4). Speculate was the hero of the meeting. He won the. Ohoka and Eyretan Handicap comfortably from Sandy, and with a penalty of slb" appropriated the District Welter Handicap. A very long delay at the post for toll former race prejudiced the chances of some of the competitors, but no doubt victory rested with the best horse on the dav at the weights. Sandy should benefit from the race, but Oblivion 11., who finished third, cannot be improved materially. None of the others ran particularly well, but probably Magnificent and Cerise and Blue suffered from their vagaries at the post. The pony Man.less was made favourite for the F.ylng Handicap, and the daughter of Maunlieher showed what a good bit of stuff She is by carry'ng 9.0 to victory. She was followed home by another pony in Mlretta wli«c rider. James Fine, received a nasty shaking owing to the saddle slipping Just after his mount passed the winning post, The Enroelydon gelding Kurus beat Ovster in the Hunters' Flat Race, and Hie old lApremont gelding Nor'-wester appropriated the Novel Handicap. The District Welter Handicap was Speculates third apipearance during the afternoon; bls second was in the Maudervllle Welter Handicap, in which he finished unplaced, and the race fell to his co-favourlte, who is a promising three-y.ear-old half-sister by Obligado to .Welbeck, —

The Amur! Turf Club lias a credit balance of £2O. It will hold Its annual race meeting on January 5, The committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club bus rejected the appeal of Mr Jeffs against the decision of the stewards disqualifying- Petrovna in the Criterion Handicap. Inquiries having boon received by the Canterbury Jockey Club from owners ns to whether the nominations of certain other owners were in order, the club Ims decided to decline to eupply Information of Wiis kind.

Racing men in nlf parts of the colour win be sorry to learu that Mr J. B. Iteid has decided to break up bw stud, and that the stallion St. Ilario and all Mr Held’s choice selection of mares will be offered for sale shortly.
