Dear Bee, . Sept. fl. THE AUSTRAL GUARDS’ BAND arrived here last Saturday and met with a very hearty reception. They were welcomed at the town station by the Salvation Army, the Wanganui Gartis< n Band and a very large concourse of people. The local band played the visitors up to the Band Rotunda in Queen’s Park, where they were formally welcomed by Mr Bignell, the Mayor, and after some speechifying both bands p’aycd seve:al selections, which were much appreciated. Amongst those present were Mesdames Barnicoat, Alexander, Pratt (Waitotarai, Humphreys. Blunde I. Frances, Hogg, Greenwood. Jones, Alisse.s Mors? (Fordell), - Blundell, Pratt, Cameron (Wellington), Tennant, Barnicoat (2LAlexander, Greig (2), Christie. Hill. Messrs J. G. Woon, Blundell, Russell, Bignell, Mason, Jones and many others. Last week the Aramoho Guild held a most successful SALE OF WORK in the Christ Church schoolroom in aid of the St. Lawrence organ fund, and the very creditable sum cf £3O was raised. Amongst those present were the Rev. AV. and Mrs Bond, Mr and Mrs Lock, Airs Hoskins, Mrs and Miss Cave, Mrs and Miss Mason, Mrs Sariern’, Miss Stewart, Alisses Newcombe, Brewer, Alexander, Izard, Fraser and others. THE LECTURE delivered by Mr Louis Cohen at ti e Museum Hall on Tuesday. 30th August, on “The Life and Earlier Music of Wagner" was listened to and keenly appreciated by a large audience. The lecturer treated t he subject in his flu: nt’ and interesting style. Mr Cohen intended io give the story cf "Tannhauser,” but finding lie could not conclude his subject in the time at his disposal asked- . Messrs Peek- and Brinkley to play the overture of that great opera, which was faultlessly rendered. Air C. W. Naylor proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the lectiirei). which was seconded by the Rev. Compton. This ecneluded the 11)01 series. Miss llemus exhibited an enlarged oil portrait of Wagner. Amongst the large audience were Airs A. Shen iff,. Miss Pago, Airs and Miss Mason, Miss Cameron, Air ami Mrs F. Hatherley. Alias Steele (Wellington), Ali ses New combe. Fenwick. Mrs Empson, Mr and Mrs Sarjeant, Aliss Stewart, Mr and Miss Towsey, Mrs and Miss Dymock, Mrs Greenwood. Miss Tennant, Mes rs J. G. Woon, Peck. Brinkley. A. O. Williams; and many others. The Wellington Piano Company gave a most successful IN VI T AT ION CONCERT in St. Paul’s Hall on Tuesday evening, when an excellent programme was provided. Aiiss .Janet Poss, on whom th* chief burden of the entertaiirnent fell, is undoubtedly a ver - capable pianist. The vocalists were Miss May O’Donovan an I Mr. Lfllicrap, who also received numerous encores. The aeecmpanlments were played ly Mr. Brinkley in his usual sympathetic style, a magnificent Bluthner Grand piano, being used for the occasion. Among the large and fashionable audience 1 noticed: Airs. Alexander, in a black evening gc.w.v. with long opera coat of black satin, with coliar revers and wide turned Iwck cuffs to the full sleeves of white satin, with black velvet applique; Aliss Alexander wore lflat-k. with a smart opera cloak of Italian blue cloth, with cape of bln? and cream doth in vandyke pattern, edg'd with black and gold braid; Mrs. Lenuiird wore black, and pale grey doak; Mrs. Price, black satin gown, relieve! with jet; Aliss Price, black, with white silk blouse and white opera coat,- with fiir trimmings; Mrs. Newcombe. wore black tucked silk; Miss Steele (Wellington!. black silk skirt, sky blue silk blouse, with vest and levers of white hue. and wide laee cuffs to the sleeves; Miss Newcombe, pretty white tucked silk blouse, with insertion, black skirt; Afiss Fenwick, black silk evening gown, with bands of white insertion; Miss Izard, floral silk blouse, with. |»ale I due pansies, black skirt, and opern .cloak of bjue, profusely trhumed with white silk braid and white ostrich feathers; Miss Dalrymple (1111118) wore a tucked black

Pilgrim wore a black evening gown, with lace and brocaded opera cloak of pale heliotrope, with ostrich feather trimmings; Mrs, Allison, white tucked silk blouse, with lace cellar, black silk skirt: Mrs. Foiling, pale pink tucked blouse, profusely trimmed with champagne insertion, black silk skirt: Mrs. Salik, black satin, with jet on corsage; Miss Aitken, pale blue silk blouse, with lace, black skirt ; Mrs. Heywood, black silk, with chiffon and ji t on corsage: Mrs. K. THE ANNUAL BULB SHOW in connection with the Public Aluseum was held last week, and was open for tiwo afternoons and evenings (Wednesday and Tlinrsd-y), during which time a very large number of people visited the Aluseum Hall to sec the beautiful collection of spring bulbs, ciuerar'/s, primulas, cyclamen-:. petunias, lr.ronias. and many other flowering plants exhibited there. On Wednesday evening the I’uiiki natives gave a musical programme, all the items being thoroughly appreciated. On Thursday evening Armstrong’s band contributed several selections. Amongst the large number who visited the show were Mesdames Wray. Babbage, Alas si, Fairburn, Forde (VVaitof ara), Pratt (Waitotara*.
