Dear Dee, June 28. Our lovely weather Jias given place to cold, dreary rain. All last week we lived on the golf links, and decided the ownership of Mrs George Gould's prize, a beautiful silver frame, which was won by Miss L. Rutherford, with Miss Stead iiinner-up. On Saturday a party of goltists journeyed to Ashburton for a match. Air If. H. Loughnan was in charge, and Airs ft. Wood captained the ladies’ team. A number of other matches are arranged for this week, amongst them the competition for the medal. A gold brooch presented by Messrs Coates and Co. is to be decided at a handicap match next week, Airs Stead giving a second prize. A very enjoyable bridge party was given by Mrs T. Cowlishaw at her resilience, Bligh’s-road, Papanui. on AVednesday evening. Among the players were Airs Wardrop, Mrs F. Cowlishaw, Mrs J. C. Palmer. Mrs AVoodrofFe, Mrs .1. I). Hall, Airs G. ftolild, Airs Pyne, Mrs Randall, Airs P. Campbell, the Misses Xedwill. Alurray-Aynsley, and Sanders. The fascinating game was played well on info the evening, concluding with a charming supper. The dance given by Alisses Afilsom. Stewart, Fisher, Ferguson, Cliolmondeley and Jameson was a most enjoyable one. The chaperones were Alesdames Jameson and Alilsom. Aliss Cox's hall, which was used for the occasion, is most convenient for small dances. Tea was served in the dining-room, the table being prettily decorated with chrysanthemums and autumn leaves, spiing Howers peeping out here and there. Some enjoyable music was listened to in the drawingroom from Mrs Wilding. Mrs Rose and Mrs Fisher. Among those present were Mr and Miss Denniston. Mrs 11. 11. and Miss Cook. Mrs F. M. Wallace. Mrs G. The Musical I nion gave two concerts this week, and scored quite a success, both musically ami in point of attendance, though to read the “Pres,-.’’ criticism you would never think so. T'e Canterbury Hall was lilled to overflowing, and for “Faust** at lea-i a hundred people were turned away, the soloists being the special attraction. Miss Murphy (Dunedin), who took the part of Marguerite, was excellent. .Mr Walter Whyte (Auckland) took the part of Faust, and fairly revelled in the music: ami Mr Hamilton Hodges’ dramatic singing of Mephistophek s was very telling. Then came “Elijah,” an old favourite litre, but with Mr Hamilton Hodges in the name part a rendering wa- given such a- few people had heard before. The other soloists, Mi-s Murphy. Mrs K.
