MARLBOROUGH.

Dear Bee, June 27, Exhibition matters are progressing well. The musical committee is kept busy, and the practices keep people from feeling too deadly dull during this depressing, changeable influenza-laden winter weather, which must have been imported from the South Pole, or some other outlandish place, for it never

belongs of right to our sunny clime. The delegates sent to Wellington to interview business people anent exhibits, etc., enjoyed themselves thoroughly—went to the Palmerston N. Winter Show aud attended the Premier’s birthday banquet. Men never think of sending ladies on this sort of expedition. They i.-iet with no end of success. and everyone feels that our exhibition is going to be a tip-top one. The old-established “Marlborough Press” is changing hands. Two young men from the North Island are speculating in inky ways, and hope to make a good thing of it. They intend—so we hear —to regenerate the paper, and make it fly into every homestead. The fourth of the winter socials in connection with Holy Trinity (Anglican) Church was held in the Sundayseliool Room on Wednesday last. It was a great success, as far as children and noise went, and if meant for a children’s party decidedly' enjoyable, but meant as it was for a grown-up people’s social, it was decidedly uncomfortable. Many of the soloists were unable to make themselves heard, and declare they will not sing again. Among the items were: lustrumeuial quartette, Miss Lloyd (piano), Messrs. Lloyd and Bush (violins), Ibbetsen (Hute); song, "Death of Nelson,” Mr Mclntosh; cornet solo, Mr Avery; song. “Sweet Dreamland Faces,” Mrs Edwards; “The Longshoreman” and "The Song For Me,” Miss Howard; “I Fear No Foe,” Mr Wolff; ”1101110, Dearie Horae,” Miss Dart; “Serenade in Summer,” Mrs Riddell; "My Beautiful Queen,” Mr Williams. Mcsdames Nash and Masters were hostesses for the occasion. Others present were Mesd’anies H. Godfrey, Howard. Williams, Mouse, Lloyd, Jackson, L. Smith, Price, Jones, Beauchamp, Misses Harris, Allen, Philpotts (2). Chaytor, Greensill, Robinson, Macalister, Stuart. etc., children ad. lib., and a goodly sprinkling of men. On Friday Mrs C. 0. Howard gave a progressive euchre party at her residence, Kent-street, Pieton, which was much enjoyed by all present. The booby prizes, which were keenly competed for, and required much playing off, were eventually won by Miss Philpotts, and

Mr 11. Western. In addition to Mr and Mrs Howard, there were present: Miss Howard, Mr and Mrs Riddell, Mr and Mrs Wolff, Mrs 11. Greensill, Misses Allen (2), Philpotts (2). Western. Robinson, Macalister, Roberts and Baines.
