The Children’s Ball at the Mansion House.

The Children’s Fancy Dress Ball at the Mansion House, London.—Some of the Lord Mayor's Guests.

The juvenile fancy dress ball given year by year at the Mansion House by each successive Lord Mayor, took place recently in London, and a New Zealand lady sends the “ Graphic ” cousins some pictures. For this delightful gathering fully one thousand invitations were issued by the Lady Mayoress, Miss Ritchie. With what delight the happy recipients of invites looked forward to the event need not be dwelt on, and it goes without saying that the invitations which had to be declined were very few in number. The little guests arrived about seven, and spent' four delightful hours ere, with eleven o’clock, came the signal for departure, in the form of “ Sir Reger De Coverley.” The costumes were, of course, of a very varied and also of a most' charming character, and the scene during the evening was a very pretty one. Most of the costumes followed on the conventional lines. . For instance, there were many Duchesses of Devonshire, afr ter Gainsborough’s famous picture, and many Nelsons, Napoleons, cavaliers, officers, and the like. Soma original designs were also to be seen. An up-to-date young lady appeared as “Bridge,” in a white dress covered with cards intended to indicate the popular ga’me; and “Fiscal Policy” was represented by a boy in the costume of a cook, with a loaf poised on either shoulder. The young gentleman wore a single eyeglass. In addition to dancing, various other amusements' were provided, including a Punch and Judy Show and conjuring.
