His Excellency the Governor will arrive in Auckland on Friday next, accompanied by Captain Scott, of the Antarctic ship Discovery. Tiie Premier, according to a Press Association telegram, is rot likely to leave for the Chatham Islands for two or three days, owing to the indisposition of Mrs. Seddon. Mrs Goodhue, of Gladstone-road, Parnell, is at present visiting Rotorua. Miss Ethel Miles (Wellington) is visiting friends in the Wairarapa. Mr J. C. Maddison (Christchurch) has been visiting Wellington. Dr. and Mrs Findlajq of Wellington, are staying in Napier. Sir George Clifford is in Wellington for a short visit. Mr and Mrs Crosse, of Dannevirkc, are staying in Napier. a Mr. and Mrs. Holmes Dean (Hawke's Bay ) are visiting Wellington. Miss Blair, of Otakeho, is visiting friends in Wanganui. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Kimber, of Wellington, are staying in Wanganui. Dr. Hector is back in Wellington from his trip to the South Island. Mr and Mrs Sedgwick (Pieton) are busy making preparations for a trip to England, for Mr Sedgwick’s health. Sir and Mrs Manning (Noumea, N.G.) and Miss Manning have been visiting Wellington. Mrs. Bowden (Dunedin) is visiting her sister, Mrs. Ranald Macdonald, “ Hanibledon,” North Belt, Christchurch. Airs. W. J. Bruce (Christchurch) has gone to Wellington for a short visit to Mrs. E. Anderson. Mr W. T. Goodman, of the Dunedin Electrical Tram Service, is in Wellington at present. The Rev. Canon King, of Dunedin, is in Gisborne, taking a much-needed six weeks’ holiday. Mrs and Miss Martin, of the Bluff Hill, Napier, arc visiting friends in Christchurch. Mrs. R. D. and Miss Gladys Thomas (Christchurch) are spending a week or two at Sumner for a change. The Hon. G. Maclean (Dunedin) passed through Wellington last week on his way to Sydney. •The Hon. Colonel Pitt (Attorney-Gen-eral) is back in Wellington, after a trip to the South Island. Mr. W. C. Sproule, M.A., LL.B., has been admitted to the Supreme Court as a barrister ami solicitor. Captain Pearce, of the Northern Union S.B. Co., is at present in Auckland. Mrs. and Miss Lascelles (Mojmt Heron) are slaying with the Misses Murray-Aynsley, Christchurch. On Saturday Sirs. Grieg gave a most, enjoyable river picnic in the oil launch for young people. Dr. Koettlitz, of the Antarctic Expedition. passed through Wellington lately on his way to Rotorua. Miss Roy (New Plymouth) is the guest of her aunt, .Mrs. MacTavish (Wellington ) • Mr and Mrs J. C. Chaytor, “Marshlands,” Spring Creek, have gone to Nelson to visit friends. Mr and Mrs Eric Caro have returned from their honeymoon trip to their residence in Tennyson-street, Napier. Mr. and Mrs. Richmond, of New Plymouth, spent a few days in Wanganui recently. Mrs. and Miss Warburton (Palmerston North) are paying a visit to Wellington. Professor Kirk (Wellington) has been elected president, of the Victoria Collego Debating Society. Mr J. Ryan (New Plymouth) has gone to make his home in Auckland, but although it is promotion he will greatly missed in St. Mary's choir, having sung in there for some years.

Bishop Grimes (Christchurch) and Bishop Verdon (Dunedin) paid a visit to Wellington last week. Mr D. Aitken, of the Union S.S. Co., arrived in Auckland on Friday, and is staying at the Star Hotel. Mrs Macalister, Picton. paid a flying visit to Nelson to see Mrs C. C. Robertson. Mrs Antill, of Napicr-terrace, has been staying for some time at Kunteroa. Mr Walter Ross, of Wellington, is visiting Mrs Brewster, of New Plymouth. Mr and Mrs Eichelbaum, of Wellington, arrived by Takapuna on Friday, and are staying at the Star Hotel. Mr. E. Cowper, of Wanganui, has returned from his visit to the Empire City. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Speed, of Wanganui, are in Pieton, staying at the Mount with Mrs. Speed. Mr. and Mrs. J. Orford, of Wanganui, are spending a few weeks at Pliminerton. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson. of New Plymouth, are visiting friends in Wanganui. Dr. Koettlitz, medical officer and botanist on the Antarctic exploring ship Discovery, is en route for Rotorua. Lady Whitmore ami Mrs Dixon intend leaving Napier this week by the Papa nui and spending the winter in England. Mr James Muir, late chairman of the Education Board, left Auckland on Apiil 20 by the Moura for a visit to Canada and the Home Country. At the meeting of the Management Committee of the Auckland Rugby Urnion last week Mr M. J. Sheaban was elected chairman for the ensuing year. Mr. A. Rosser, who represented the Auckland Trades and Labour Council at the recent Christchurch conference, returned to Auckland last week. Captain Reginald Farmer, late of the Union Company’s service, vent to England last week for a trip .travelling by Australia. A handsome American oak studychair has been presented to Mr C. Godber, Wellington, by the members of the Baptist Church. The Rev. Richard Arkwright (Berkshire, England), is stayng with his brother, the Hou. Francis Arkwright, at “ Overton,” Rangitikei. Mr J. W. Storey, who lias teen assistant clerk in the Magistrate’s Court at Hamilton for three years, has received notice of removal to Auckland. < Mr. .A. 11. Turnbull has been re-elect-ed President of the Wellington Harrier Club. Mr. W. 11. Pollock, the wellknown amateur athlete, is captain. Mr. and Mrs. Alister Clark and Miss Fitzgerald returned to their home in Australia last week, after spending the summer in Christchurch. Mr MeGirr, of the Wellington office of the Tourist Department, is spending some holiday leave in this district, lie went to Rotorua last week. Among Wellington residents who arc departing to England for a trip is Mr F. Brantill, of the Union Bank, who travels by way of Australia. Mr. F. W. Barron has joined the Talune as second officer, Mr. Platts having transferred in a similar position to the Wuikare. Mr and Mrs F. M. Leekie. of Wellington, after spending a. very pleasant holiday at Rotorua, returned to Auckland hist week. Sir William Armstrong. Bart., who has been touring New Zealand, has left, on his return journey to Ireland, via Australia. Mr and Mrs St. Hill have returned to Hawke’s Hay alter a pleasant visit to England. Mr and Miss St. Hill, fo Porungahau, are visiting Napier. Mr J. C. Wilkin, managing director of the "Lyttelton Times” Company, is at present visiting Auckland. He is accompanied by Mrs. Wilkins. The Rev. W. O. Bobb, pastor of St. Andrew's (Presbyterian) Chureli. Blenheim. has left for a trip to the Wanganui district. Mrs Edgar is accompanying lu’i sister, Miss Helle Napier, who is touring New Zealand and giving her successful musical and dramatic recitals in all the larger towns. Mrs Edgar will not return to Napier for several weeks.

Moore (2) and Miss Moore, who have been staying at the Central Hotel, left on Saturday for Rotorua. They intend spending two or three weeks in the Rotorua district. Mr and Mrs Spencer, of Wanganui, who for sometime past have been staying at the Star Hotel, left Auckland last week. They are going to the St. Louis Exhibition via Canada. The round trip to Rotorua, via Wanganui, and back to Wellington by way of Napier, is being made by Mr and Mrs J. Cunningham, of Sydney, who are on a holiday trip. Mr J. E. Trude, of Brisbane, arrived from Rotorua on Saturday, and is staying al the Central Hotel. He left for Sydney by the Zcalandia on Monday. A handsome travelling bag was presented to Mr. J. C. Quinlan, Christchurch, by his comrades of the Post and Telegraph Office there, on the occasion of his transfer to Wellington. Mr A. Bell, who has been appointed headmaster of Te Arolia West school, was given a Bible by the Waihi Methodist Sunday-school art a remembrance of his three years’ service in the school. Mr and Mrs Stephen Myers (London), who have been staying with Mrs Myer’s mother (Mrs L. I). Nathan, of Auckland I, have left to catch the Athenic for Home. Miss Brown (matron of New Plymouth Hospital) and Miss A. Ilempton, of the same town, have returned after their very' pleasant trip to Auckland and Rotorua, Mr and Mrs Henry Wily and family. ‘'The Falls,” Maiiku, are paying a shortvisit to Auckland, and are making ‘‘Ellesmere,’’ Princes-strcet, their headquarters. Mr Cowper, of “Kukutu,” Wanganui, is at present staying at “ Kaitoke,” Dannevirke, while Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Cowper have gone for a month's holiday to Rotorua. Mr. W. H. Williams arrived from the North last Thursday, and is staying at the Central Hotel for a few days. He intends visiting Rotorua with his people from Wellington. Messrs. Moore (2) and Miss Moore, of Christchurch, arrived in Auckland last Thursday, and arc staying at the Central Hotel for a few’ days before proceeding to the Rotorua district. Three delegates recently elected to the Victoria College Council, Wellington, are Messrs T. R. Fleming, A. R. Meek, and G. Talbot. Dr. Chappie is Parliamentary' representative. The Rev. F. W. Isitt, who has been spending some time in Auckland, and recently returned from Rotorua, went to New Plymouth last week. He was the guest of Mr. Wesley Spragg at Mount Albert. Mrs T. Williams, Airs E. Williams, and Mr G. C. Williams, of Wellington, whose family own a great deal of property in the Auckland province, arrived in Auckland last week, and subsequently went on to Rotorua, Captain Matthews, of Inglewood, who served with several of the early contingents iu South Africa, leaves for England with Mrs. and Master Matthews by the Onirah from Sydney on the 7th pros. Mrs. A. K. Newman (Wellington) is leaving for a trip to England in June. She will be accompanied by her son, Mr. Frank Newman, who is (voing Home for a course of study at one of the Universities. Lieutenant Nares, R.N., spent a few days in Wellington, en route to Westport, where he joins H.M.s. Penguin, in place of Lieutenant Hancock, who has just gone to England. The Mayor of Dunedin (Mr T. Scott) arrived in Auckland on Thursday to attend the Arbitration Court. Lie is accompanied by his wife, and takes her to Rotorua after the tramway case concludes. The Rt. Rev. Bishop Verdon, of Dunedin, who was in Wellington for the farewell to Archbishop Redwood, has apparently decided to come up to Auckland, as he- is a passenger hither by the Zcalandia from Wellington. Captains A. Farquhar (of the Wakatcre) and W. Bettis (of the Waimarie) have been presented with enlarged photos of the yachts Okcrc and Emerald by Hie Ponsonby Regatta Committee in recognition of their services at that function.

The lion. Mr. Lascelles, an English visitor, who has had about two months’ fishing in the thermal district, arrived back in Auckland from Rotorua last week. He stays at the Star Hotel some time. Mr D. Milne, of Whakapirau, consulting engineer to the Northern Union Steamboat Company, left by the Mara10a last week for Sydney to superintend the completion of the new tunnel steamer being built for the company. The Ladies’ Championship Singles of the Victoria College Tennis Club, W’ellington, was won by Miss Batliam, against Miss Van Stavern. The latter lady was runner-up to Miss Powdrell for the Championship at the big Easter Tournament held in Wellington. The Misses Marsh, who came out to New Zealand from England to visit their relatives, Mr. and Mrs. Marsh, of Rangiriri, have returned to Auckland, and, after staying at the Grand Hotel during last week, left on Saturday for Wellington, where they catch the next direct boat for England. Mrs Edmund Mahony, who has suffered from a sharp and dangerous attack of irritation and congestion of the brain, is now convalescent, and is staying at Lake Takapuna. Her physicians recommend a sea voyage. Mr Francis Rhodes, who left per Zealandia en route for a trip to England, was on Friday last presented with a gold-mounted greenstone pendant and a purse of sovereigns by the employees of his father, Mr George Rhodes, as a mark of their esteem. Mr J. Campbell, the Government architect, who is to prepare the plans fertile new Rotorua baths (which will cost over £20.000), went to Rotorua on Saturday. His duty is to prepare detailed specifications of Dr. Wohlinann’s original plans, and tenders will be called for the work on his return to Wellington. Bishop Lcnihan has arrived in Wellington for the purpose of assisting in the farewell to Archbishop Redwood prior to his departure for Rome. The Archbishop will be a passenger to America by the Sonoma on her next trip. Mr W. Scott (Mayor of Dunedin) and Mr W. G. T. Goodman (Noyes Bros’, representative) arrived in Auckland today to attend the Arbitration Court sitting in the tramways employees' dispute. Mr Scott is staying at the Central Hotel. A small party of Americans, comprising Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Morragh and Miss Marriott Watson, are travelling overland to Auckland, via llotorua. After visiting Sydney, they return to New York by way of Japan, etc. Mr and Mrs D’Arcy (Sydney) arrived in Auckland on Sunday last. They are the guests of Mr and Mrs E. Anderson, Parnell. Mr D'Arcy and Mr Anderson leave at the end of the week on a shooting expedition. Mr and Mrs Isaac Coates and the Misses Coates (2) (Hamilton) are leaving by the Waikane on Monday, 2nd May, for Sydney, where they will join the Omrah, en route for England. They expect to be away for some time. Mr. and Mrs. Myers, of Birmingham, and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Joseph, of Wellington, who are showing the former round the colony, were in Auckland last week, having come up the Wanganui river and through Rotorua, and on Monday they again left for the South. A Press Association telegram states that Mr. and Mrs. G. P. Donnel'y. who arc going to England, accompanied by their daughter, Mrs. Perry, were farewelled by a large Maori gathering at Havelock North, and presented with an address and native curios. Bishop Neligan leaves Auckland next week to attend the ceremony which is to be performed by the Governor next Thursday of unveiling a memorial in St. Mary’s Church, New Plymouth, to soldiers who fell in the Maori War. Major-General Babington has stated that he cannot attend. The Rev. R. Scott-West and Mrs. Scott West (Sydney) passed through Wellington on their way to Dunedin last week, where the former will act as locum tenens at First Church, the pulpit of which has been vacant since the Rev. Dr. Gibb resigned in order to come to Wellington some months ago.

Miss Minnie Forsyth was married to Mr. Fred. Paltridge at the Waihi Metnodist Church last week. Misses B. Forsyth and Paltridge were the bridesmaids and Messrs. R. Evans and J. Forsyth groomsmen. The wedding presents included a fine Bible presented by the Sun-day-school, in which both were teachers. Two bld and well-known residents of Auckland celebrated their golden wedding last week in Mr- and Mrs. Chas. Rose, of Khyber Pass road. Among the guests who attended the anniversary celebrations were the best man, Mr John Rose, and the principal bridesmaid, now Mrs White. Consul-General Dillingham was advised by cablegram last week that the Sierra, on which Mrs and Miss Dillingham were passengers to San Francisco, reached Honolulu on time, after an unusually smooth and enjoyable trip, and that Mrs Dillingham is already much improved in health. Mr. and Mrs. T. Young and the Misses Young (3), of Horsham (Vic.), left Auckland on Thursday for Wanganui. They were shown round the Hot Lake* by Messrs. Ccok, who will now escort them up tile Wanganui River from that town. They go back by the river and then overland to Wellington and the South. Mrs. John Pascoe and Miss L. Pascoe, wife and daughter of Mr. John I’ascoe, general manager of the Lancaster West Goldmine at Krugersdorp (South Africa), who have been on a visit to their relatives in Auckland for the last six: months, leave on their return home by the Ventura on May 2, to catch the Damascus at Sydney. Mr Walker, of the Thames, and the Misses Alice aud Amy Walker, who are going on a visit to England, left by the Ta lune on Saturday for Wellington to join the Athenic. The Misses Walker will have a pleasant time, having their cousin, Madame Melba, to show them the sighffi of London. A handsome writing ease was presented to Miss Crowther (Wellington) by the staff of St. Paul’s Sunday-school on the occasion of her departure for Westport. Miss Crowther has been an invaluable worker for the parish for many years, and has Avon the. esteem of all who have come in contact with her. Mr W. S. Russell (eldest san of Mr A. S. Russell, of the South British Insurance Company), who has been away in Sydney for about three years, returned to Auckland last week in order to be best man at his sister Eva's wedding. He leaves again for Sydney, where he has a responsible position, on Monday, May 2nd. The following guests are staying at the Springs Hotel, Kamo: —Mr and Mrs Carnow and child, Miss Hyde, Mr and Mrs Doal, child and nurse (Helensville), Mr Bull (Whakaperc), Mr G. Allen (Canterbury), Mr Donald McDonald (Waipu), Mr and Mrs Moore, and three children (Stratford), Mr and Mrs Vaile (Auckland), Mr Thomas (Whangarei), Mrs Gill, child and nurse (Maungaturoto), Lady Logan Campbell, Miss Campbell (Auckland), Mrs Lewis (Bay of Islands), Mrs Cope and child, Miss Leonard (Rualagata). Mr John Wiseman, who is leaving on a trip Home, was on Friday afternoon presented by his employees with a very handsome writing folio and one for his wife. These were very nicely got up, and should be of special value to the recipients owing to the fact that they were made in a branch of the firm’s bag department. Mr W. H. Patterson, in making the presentation, expressed the employees’ hearty good wishes, and the hope that the trip might be a thoroughly enjoyable one. Mr Wiseman, in reply, thanked his employees for their kind expressions of goodwill, ami spoke of the friendly relations which had always existed, between the firm and the staff. Ho expressed himself as being fully confident that, during his absence one and al! would use their best, endeavours in the interests of the company. The meeting ended with cheers for Mr and Mrs Wiseman.
