MARLBOROUGH.

Dear Bee, January 18. The Hon. C. H. Mills and Mrs Mills are at present on a visit to Marlborough, and Mr Mills’ constituents have taken the opportunity of interviewing him with regard to several matters, particularly the railway and things connected therewith. For some years Blenheim residents have been agitating for a new station, everyone agreeing that the present structure is a disgrace to the town and the Government. After spending a day each in Picton and Blenheim, Mr Mills went on to Havelock and the Sounds. At the recent Conference in Nelson a presentation was made to Mr T. H. Gill, of Wellington, on behalf of the Marlborough branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute, as a return for his services in connection with the Sturrock ease. The presentation took the form of a set of silver fruit knives and forks. On Wednesday last a conference of local bodies and various institutions in the district was held at Blenheim to make arrangements for holding an Industrial Exhibition in Marlborough. About thirty representatives were present, and these were unanimously in favour of holding the proposed exhibition for the purpose of promoting industrial enterprise and of advertising the district. A motion for holding the exhibition about the middle of the year was carried, and an executive committee was appointed consisting of Messrs J. J. Corry, G. Edwards, W. B. Parker, R. H. Smale, J. Reid, E. Mead, S. Tapp, R. Bell, and H. V. Browne. Mr R. McCallum was elected president, Messrs F. Shaw and S. M. Neville, vice-presidents, and Mr W. H. Macey, treasurer. The appointment of a secretary was left to the executive committee. The Awarua Lawn Tennis Club's Social was held in Mr Redwood’s grain

store at Spring Creek on Wednesday last, and was a great success, there being over two hundred present.

Ou Saturday last a tennis match was played in Picton between members of the Awarua and of the Waitohi Lawn Tennis Clubs. The weather was perfect and a large number of people assembled to watch the match, which resulted in a win for the Waitohi Club by 337 points to 203. Afternoon tea was provided by the members of the local club. Among those present were Mesdames Redman. Wolff, Riddell, Valentine, Robertson, Morris, Price, Barr, Oxley, Petrie, Macalister, the Misses Morris, Robinson, Oxley, Greensill, Edwards (2), Price, Allen (2), Miles (2), Young (2), B. Smith, Riley, R. Macalister, Beatson, Gane, Cresswell (3), Ladley, Morrin, Marell, Sheridan, and Messrs Wolff, Worsdell, Smith, Mclntosh (2), Scott, Jones, Broderick Valentine, Cox, Cresswell, Wright, H. Robinson, Gane, Tooker, Dodson and Clarke.

Among recent visitors to Picton were the following ex-residents: Mr Nepean Kenny (Auckland!, brother of Captain Kenny, of the “Rocks,” Mr A. Ruff (Taranaki), and Mr T. Jackson (Kaikoura), brother of Mr J. Jackson, of Te Awaiti.

On Saturday week the new oil launch built for Dr. Redman, was successfully launched at Picton. The launch was christened the “Tohunga,” the christening ceremony being performed by Mrs Redman.

Captain H. Fisk has been appointed pilot at the Wairau river mouth.

Nurse Millington, of the Picton Hospital staff, has been granted three months’ leave of absence on account of illness.
