Mr Sargent, of Onehunga, who is believed to be the oldest Mason in the colony, has recovered from a severe illness, which had laid him low. Mr Justice Parker, of Perth, Western Australia, and his family arrived by the Ventura on a holiday tour of the colony. A telegram from Wellington says that Dr. Makgill has been transferred to the head office of the Health Department. Rev. F. G. Evans and Mrs Evans, who have been on a short visit to Auckland. have now returned to New Plymouth. LL.D., who recently returned from England, has entered into partnership with Mr Alan Brown, and they continue the practice as barristers and solicitors in the Bank of New Zealand Buildings, Auckland. In the recent Trinity College practical musical examinations held in Auckland Miss Elsie Potter succeeded in gaining the maximum number of marks obtainable in the preparatory grade. Miss Potter is a pupil of Miss Essie Holland. The Rev. Mr and Mrs Powell, and Miss Powell, of Hereford (England I, who have been staying at the Grand Hotel, are making a tour of the colony. Mr and Mrs J. Burnett, of Wellington. came to Auckland in the Hinemoa. anti after staying at the Centra! Hotel for some days, went up to the Waikato with the intention of touring the locality between there and Rotorua. Mr Crawley, who three years ago was in charge of the Frankton Junction station. is at present re-visiting Hamilton. Mr Crawley has just retired from the Railway Department, after over 27 years’ service, and is taking an extended trip through th? colony. Mr R. W. Gevers (Government Agent for the Northern Province of Ceylon) and Mrs Gevers are at present making a tour of Australia. They have been for some weeks the guests of Sir Arthur and Lady Havelock at Hobart. They intend visiting New Zealand shortly. The Hou. Derek Keppel, C.M.G., who is Equerry-in-Ordinary to the Prince of Wales, and who -accompanied his Royal Highness on his trip through Australia in 1901, was a passenger by the India, which arrived in Melbourne on the sth inst. Mr J. Bridson-Seaitle and Mr and Mrs Cowan, of London, and Mr Lindley Conner, of Capetown, are making a tour of the North Island. They go from Auckland through the island via Rotorua. Taupo and the Wanganui River to Wellington. The wedding of Miss Harper, only daughter of Air and Mrs G. Harper, is announced to take place on January 23th to Dr. Loughnan of Co'ac, Melbourne. The wedding will take place in the morning privately and a reception will be held in the afternoon- writes our Christchurch correspondent. Mr. C. G. F. Eagar is leaving Napier to take up his residence at the Hutt. He has acted as choirmaster at St. Patrick's Church for several years, and on January 14 lie was presented by Father Goggan, on behalf of the choir, with a handsome gold watch chain and medal in appreciation of his valuable services. Sir Donald and Lady Robertson (India), who have been in Wellington for some days, have left for the South Island, where they will join His Excellency tlie Governor on a trip to Hanmer Springs. They will probably also visit the Southern Lakes and the Hermitage. Lady Robertson is a relation of Lt.-Col. Gorton, Bulls. Rangitikei. The Rev. A. H. and Mrs Sedgwick have left Picton for Rotorua. The vicars departure was very nearly followed by the loss of his church, for the next day. about noon, the belfry of Holy Trinity Church was found to be on fire. The fire was probably caused by a spark from a neighbouring chimney. Luckily it was discovered in good time., and was extinguished before much damage was done. Mr and Airs Henning have returned to Auckland after making a record run up to Rotorua in a locombile car. Their runnini* time out to Rotorua was 10 hours 40 minutes, and inward to Auckland 9 hours 20 minutes. There was but one small accident on the outward trip and none on the inward. These times are claimed as records. The Right Hon. C. C. Kingston went up to Rotorua on Saturday last by the express. He was met by a Trades and Labour Council deputation while in Atukland. and cordially welcomed to the colony as the pioneer and leader of democracy in Australia. Air Kingston will remain in Rotorua some tune, and probably travel thence via Tautnaranui

and Wanganui River to Wellington and the rest of the colony. Mr W. Goldie, superintendent of parks, leaves for the South in a few days for a holiday. Mr Goldie has been commissioned by the City Council to look out on bis travels for ideas applicable to the improvement of the local reserves. He will be away for three weeks. Air. and Airs. H. R. Bloomfield returned to Auckland on Sunday after a fortnight’s cruise round and about the great Barrier in their fine yacht the Viking. Their-future home will be in the Tsansvaal district, where Air Valentine has an appointment in the mines. Aliss Joilie takes with her the best wishes of her many friends in Christchurch and Taranaki. Air AMlentine, who is a brother to Dr. Valentine. Assistant Health Officer, went to South Africa with two of the New Zealand. Contingents. He was taken prisoner by the Boers, and published an account of his experiences, which was read with much interest. An interesting function took pls.c-e at the West End Rowing Club’s boating shed at St. Alary’s Bay, Auckland, en Saturday last, when the members presented to Air. Thomas Peacock a handsomely framed and tastefully illuminated address, the text being as follows: ’’On behalf of the members of the West End Rowing Club, we beg to tender you and Airs. Peacock congratulations on your safe return from a trip round the world. The members are deeply grateful for the many kindnesses shown by you to the club ever since its inception, and for the kind interest you have always taken in its welfare. They take this opportunity of conveying to you their heartfelt thanks for the same, and trust that the good feeling existing may long continue. Wishing you. Airs. Peacock, and family many, years of health and happiness.” Then followed the signatures of the officers. The illuminating of the address was ably done by Air. R. Ward, Queen street. At the top is a sketch of the boat shed, and alongside are two flags crossed.
