News of the death of Captain Cable, a will known South Sea Island trading master, was brought to Sydney by the steamer Fiona. The deceased died a few weeks ago al Christmas Island. Bishop AVelldon. formerly of Calcutta, who has been on a visit to this colony, left Lyttelton by the Alonowai for Hobart. "lie afterwards goes on to Melbourne, and thence to England. Dr. Collins, superintendent of the Auckland Hospital, went to Galatea on Monday to join Air E. D. O’Rorke’s fishing party, returning home a week afterwards. Air. E. F. Pollock, who came to New Zealand 21 years ago. is returning Home for a six months’ holiday. He leaves Auckland by the Alokoia on her next trip to Australia. Air Thomas P. Purves (Sydney) is visiting New Zealand on his annual visit of inspection to the New Zealand branches of the New York Life Insurance Company, of which he is general manager for Australasia.

Air. 11. F. AVyatt.the Navy League Commissioner, went up to the Hot Lakes district on Saturday with his niece. He returns to Auckland in time to address a large public meeting this week, and then goes South. Aliss A. Hutchison, daughter of Air J. Hutchison, of Orakau, was married to Air S. Walton, son of Air J. Walton, of Pukcterata, at the Anglican church in Kihikihi on Thursday week. Air. H. B. Lusk, of Auckla'nd, left by the Talune on Tuesday for Hawke’s Bay, where he will spend a week or two before proceeding on to Wellington to see the cricket match between the North and South Islands.

A number of Auckland cricket enthusiasts arc making up a party to go to Sydney to see the next test match between the English cricketers v. the Australians. They leave about the thirteenth of February. Air and Airs E. C. Beale and family, accompanied by Aliss Hilda Symes, are spending a few days at AA'aiwera. On leaving there they proceed to Orewa. where they intend spending three weeks. Air. John Murrell, manager of the Wellington branch of Kinsey, Barns, and Co., and representative of the New Zealand and African Steamship Company, has resigned, and Mr. F. Ellis, late of Sydney, will succeed him. Air and Airs Waller Impett, of Wanganui, are at present spending their holidays in Auckland. Air Impett, who is an old Auckland boy, is organist at St. Paul’s, Wanganui, and has a large teaching connection there. Aliss Alargaret Cox-Taylor, a young Australian journalist, will visit the colony early in the nt','; year for the purpose of “writing up” some of our scenic resorts, etc. Aliss Cox-Taylor is a contributor to London “Punch” as well as to Australian journals. Adjutant and Airs Dickens, of the AVhangarei Salvation Army, have left Whangarei for another district, and were fare welled on Tuesday week by many citizens, Air F. Alander, AL11.1?., presiding. They are now spending a holiday at the Hot Lakes.

Air J. McGowan, a brother of the Commissioner of Taxes, has been appointed chief of the Valuation Department in Auckland. He takes up his new dirties forthwith. He has been for some time past clerk in charge of the Land Tax Department at AVellington.

Alajor-General Buckle, a retired Imperial officer, arrived in the colony by the Corinthic on a visit for the fishing and shooting. General Buckle began Ills military career by fighting under Garibaldi in Italy, and was subsequently stationed in India for many rears.

Airs Gilruth (AVellington), who has been on a trip to England, returned by the Corinthic. being joined at Hobart by Air Gilruth (Government veterinarian) on the termination of an official visit to Tasmania.

Air. Beal, who has been in charge of the electric lighting in Rotorua for some time, has been granted a month’s leave. It is believed that Air. Beal is to be appointed to the Okere Falls station, Air. White assuming charge at Rotorua.

Air. A. AlcGowan. who lias been appointed chief of the A ablation Department at Auckland, was presented with several tokens of esteem by the staff of the Land Tax Department, of which be has been head for years, before he left AVellington.

Air. and Airs. Ballantyne, of Christchurch, who were visiting Napier for the championship tennis tournament, have gone on to the Hot Lakes, accompanied by Airs. Kenrick Hill and Aliss Shaw.

Air., Airs., and the Afisses Aleck. of AA’elfington, spent the Christmas holidays in Napier. They left for Dannevirke last week. Mr., Airs., and Aliss Esam, who also spent Christmas in

Napier, have returned io their home in Masterton. Air John Gfll, of the Post and Telegraph Department (AVellington!, has returned after a two years’ trip to England, where he has been engaged in perfecting an invention iu telegraphy, which is highly approved of by English experts.

Lieut.-Colonel J. Whiteside McCoy, of Aleibourne, a member of the Commonwealth Parliament of Australia, who has been visiting the cold lakes of the .South Island, arrived by the Tarawera last week. He will return to AA’ellingtou via Rotorua, Taupo, and the AVanganui River later on.

Surgeon-Captain Bakewell, Af.D., of the Ninth N.Z.M.R., has just received the South African (Queen’s) medal. He has already the Crimean, with Sebastopol clasp, and the Turkish, and is the only officer who has served under Lord Raglan in the Crimea and Lord Kitchener in South Africa. Air Charles Wallnut t, of Hamilton, has been appointed to a position in the Tourist Office at Rotorua. He has been pursuing the business of land and financial agent at Hamilton, and was mainly responsible for the creation of the Hamilton Building Society, of which he has been secretary. Airs and Miss Higginson are back in , AA'ellington after a trip Home. They spent some weeks in Sydney before continuing their journey to New Zealand. Airs J. C. AA’iliiams and her daughter, who have been away in England for the last two years, were also passengers front Sydney by the last steamer. Air Edward Pearce and Aliss Christina Pearce are re-visiting AVellington, after an absence of about six years, during which time they have principally been living at Cheltenham, England. They expect to remain in the colony about three months, most of which time will be spent in visiting their numerous friends and relations. Air IT. Eyre Kenny, S.AI., has been transferred from AVanganui to Nelson, where be will succeed Air H. AV. Robinson, S.AI., who will shortly retire from the publie service. Air A. Turnbull, S.AI., and registrar of the Supreme Court at Napier, will take Air Kenny's place at Wanganui. Captain C. F. Greville, of the Seventh Hussars, who accompanies Lord Northcote to Australia as aide-de-camp, saw

service in the Mataltele campaign of 1896-97, and came Home in 1899, prior to the outbreak of the Boer war. Later he was appointed A.D.C. to Lord Northcote, and accompanied the new GovernorGeneral to India in 1909, and has been in his suite ever since.

Mrs T. Kennedy Macdonald (Wellington) and her daughter are home again, after a trip to England and Europe. Mrs and Miss Macdonald returned by way of America, but on reaching Auckland Mrs Macdonald was unfortunatey taken ill, and had to remain three weeks before she was able to continue her journey to Wellington.

Staying at Sumner at the various places are quite a number of Christchurch residents, amongst the number being Mrs Gould, sent-., Mrs Charles Gould, Mr and Mrs Henry Harris, the Misses Harris, Miss Eairhurst, Mr and Mrs Maine, Mr and Mrs F. Fuller and two little girls, Mrs H. Quane and children, Mrs H. C. M. Watson, Miss N. Watson, Mrs D. Munro and children. Mr Janies Drummond, M.A., who has been appointed first assistant at Timaru High School, is an Aucklander who graduated with extreme ability at the New Zealand University. He was English master at Nelson College for some years, and resigned his position to go to Germany to study languages. lie has but recently returned to the colony.

Mr. James MacLaren, jyho is mentioned as a possible successor to Sir James Hector as Government Geologist in New Zealand, at a salary of £6OO a year, is a New Zealander. He is a son of Mr. James MacLaren, engineer of the Thames County Council, and was born on the Thames goldfield about twenty-eight years ago. He is at present on the geological stall in India, where he is receiving £lOOO a year.

Mr F. L. Hadfield, of Dunedin, who has accepted an engagement with the Church of Christ in Auckland, was farewelled by the members of the South Dunedin Church recently, and presented with a copy of “Ellicot’s Commentaries on the Bible” and a travelling bag. Mrs Hadfield on the same occasion was given a silver teapot and butter-knife by the members, who expressed regret at the departure of the popular couple. The teachers assembled in Wellington in connection with the conference of native school teachers last week presented Mr. J. H. Pope, who recently retired from the position of inspector of native .schools, after 25 years’ service, with a handsome walnut bookcase and a number of volumes. Mr. Pope was also presented with a gold frame and a silver pencil case, from the natives of Pomoand Wanganui River.

Captain Crawford, a well-known “skipper” on the south-west coast of this island, has taken up his residence in Auckland, after spending over fifteen years in the service of the WanganuiWellington Steam Packet Co., most recently as master of the Hula. Before he left Wanganui he ’ was -presented with an address and a little gold propeller (for his watch-chain) by his officers, crew and friends.

Mr. and Mrs. 11. F. Butcher, of, Napier, left for Rotorua in motor cars about a week ago. Mrs. Butcher and her nephew were in one car, the former driving. When descending a hill she lost her hat, looked back,- and the motor ran into a tree. Both occupants were thrown out, and the party was delayed for about two days, while the car was being repaired.

Mr tV. Davaney, the secretary of the Taranaki Sawmillers’; Association, is seriously affected in health, owing to his having contracted a form of tuberculosis while milking. The disease has attacked his right hand, and the medical men at New Plymouth have advised him that unless the hand and forearm are operated on immediately there may be some danger to his life.’ The Chairman of the Raglan County Council, on behalf of the councillors, has handed Mr. W. J. Conradi (who has resigned his position as clerk in order to take up the clerkship of the Waikato Hospital and Charitable Aid Board), a letter signed by the councillors expressing their appreciation of his services during the past 12 years, and their best wishes for his future welfare; also a purse of sovereigns, requesting that it should be devoted to the purchase of a small memento to remind him of their pleasant association. Wellington art circles have recently been strengthened by the acquisition of Miss Frances Hodgkin ami Miss D. Richmond, who have just returned from a two years’ trip to the Old World. Miss Hodgkin, who is a member of a well-known Dunedin family of artists, has attained the proud distinction of being the first New Zealander to have a picture accepted by the Royal Academy, and hung on the "line.” She spent some time in Morocco pursuing her art. and visited as well the principal resorts of the Continent. Miss Hodgkin, who has been staying with her sister. Mrs W. Field, has decided to remain in Wellington, and open a studio there. She intends shortly to hold an

exhibition of her paintings, which is being looked forward to with interest. Mr J. L. Neild, who has just been elected as a representative of Sydney in the Federal Parliament, was a Taranaki boy. His father and mother, Dr. and Mrs Neild, came out to New Ply-

mouth about 1854 with their family, and took up land. Shortly after the war broke out the family removed to Australia. The second son, J. L., went into business as a broker and commission agent in Sydney, and early-

entered political life. In politics he is known as Jawbone Neild, from the fact that on one occasion, when stonewalling a measure, he spoke for nine consecutive hours. During the South African war he offered to raise a contingent, and received a colonel’s commission.
