GEORGE’S ROWING CLUB “AT HOME.” "By far the largest and most successful of the many pleasant “At Homes” given by the St. George’s Rowing Club on the occasion of the opening of their rowing season was held in the pretty Judge’s Bay on Saturday afternoon. Though counter attractions of a social description were numerous, the attendance was very large, though a greater number than usual of the guests were strangers io me, being evidently friends of the rowers from other clubs. The beach and boathouse were ablaze with flags and bunting, and the scene at about four o clock, when there must have > been some fifteen hundred persons present, ■was extremely animated. The serving ot afternoon tea and the usual refresh 4 monts was this year placed in the hands .. a ladies’ committee, and was accomplished much more smoothly than usual.

The secretary (Mr Busby) was indefatigable in his efforts for the enjoyment of all, and was ably assisted by many members of the club. From a rowing point of view the afternoon was scarcely so successful, and the majority of boats swamped in their races. Yachts and launches were, however, about to render prmpt aid, and no accident of any kind happened. It should be mentioned that Mrs Street, as usual, kindly granted the use of her grounds, and that the hill, with its beautiful view, was well patronised. OPENING OF THE POLO SEASON. Owing to the very large number of social fixtures for the same day and time the attendance of our sex at the opening of the polo season on Saturday was not nearly as large as I had anticipated. The afternoon was, however, very pleasant, and a considerable number of fair enthusiasts turned up to honour the occasion. The ground was in excellent condition, the day fine, and the breeze cool, and some fairly good scratch games were witnessed. A band was present, but it cannot honestly be said it added very greatly to the afternoon’s enjoyment. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs McCosh Clark and a committee of ladies.
