ENGLISH RACING.

THE ST. LEG ER. LONDON, September 11. The principal visitors to Doncaster this year were the King and Jupiter Piuvius. The former was au additional attraction to the sport-loving Tykes, who mustered lu stronger force on the opening »l?y cf the meeting than usual, and gave the King a typical Yorkshire welcome. The meeting certainly stc<J in need of sora-» potent attraction, for the weather was Dearly ; ii that was not desired, au*l the principal event was reduced to a one-horse affair. Hut for the King's tenth hour decision to start Persistancv (I'crsimmon—Laodamia) las well as Mead (Persimmon—Meadow Chari, Sir James Miller’s Derby and Two Thousand Guineas winner Rocksand (Sainfoin— Roquebrune) would only hare had in opposition Mcdd. Mr Musker's Wm. Rufus (Melton—Simenau and Sir E. Cassel’s l ove Charm (Love Wisely—Omaha). But for Persistance’s appearance the field would have been the smallest on record since ISS3. As it was. it equailed that of Gait-re More’s year, 1597. and the race was. if anything, tamer than that won by Mr Gubbins’ grand colt. On form Rocksand had a stone in band of bis rivals, but wkh the trainers of Mead, Love Charm and William Rufus confident that their candidates would make a bold bid for victory. the fielders plucked up ••ourag? enough to accept odds of 3 to 2 that Sir James MH’er’s colt did not win. Genuine public money made Mead second favourite at 7 to 1 against: whilst tens could be bad about Love Charm, a point longer odds being laid against William Rufus. As for Persistanee. the ring estimated his chances at 200 to 1. The race needs very little description. Pereistance made play till a mile from home, where he dropped back l>eat?n. leaving Rocksand with a slight lead of Love Charm. Mead, which had been in the rear, taking third place soon jfter. Half a mile from the winning post the favourite was sailing away with, a clear lead, and though Cannon drove Mead into second place, that colt could not get near to Rocksami. who ran home an effortless winner by four lengths from William Rufus, who challenged the King’s horse inside the distance, and beat him half a lengrh for secund honours. Thus was Rocksand’s name added to the equine roll of fame as a winner of the “Triple Crown.’’ His predecessors were:— West Australian (1853). Glsd*at-?ur (ISSS). Lord Lyon (IS6&, Ormonde (1566), Common (1891), Isinglass (1593), Galtee More (1897). Flying Fox *1899i, Diamond Jubii<?e (1900). Sceptre’s name does not figure onthe roll, but she had her revenge when, by win-iing four of the five classic races, she excelled all feats of the kind recorded. DONCASTER BLOODSTOCK SALES. Although there was a fair muster round both sale rings at Doncaster ou Tuesday, th? results were rather disappointing, rnd only iu the ease of Pinion Melton, a yearling brother to William Rufus iMelton— Simena) was four figures bid. vaptain Bewkke secured him for 1450 guineas. Graceful, a filly by Melton—Glue, sold to Mr Raphael for 710 guineas, and a half brother to MeYardley. winner of the Great Ebor Handicap, Lady Hawker by name (Melton—Paradoxical), went to W. I’Anson for 770 guinea*. Th? average for the 21 lots was only 22d guineas. On Wednesday the sale paddocks were a little more animated, and six youngsters travelled into four figures. Mr J. E. Platt disposed of seven for 7235 guineas, er an average of 1“33 guineas. This lot included the first stock of Flying Fox that has been offered in the English sale ring. This filly, whose dam. I-onely. won the Oaks In I«SS. was so much fancied that she was run up to 33i)0 guineas, at which figure Mr George Faber took her. A half brother to that grand horse William the Third,
