The Late Mr J. W. Hewson.

The many friends of Mr J. W. Hewson will learn with regret of his death at the age of fifty-six years on Sunday. Deceased came to this colony with his father Mr Charles Hewson, of Mongonui. in the ship Motoka forty-four years ago. The father was a native of Lincolnshire and settled at Mongonui. Mr J. W. Hewson, like many other settlers’ sons, saw service during the Maori war. Later on, when the Thames goldfield was discovered, he tried his luck with the pick and shovel, and was well known in the early days of the Thames. Subsequently Mr Hewson held a position under the contractor for the Auckland railway tunnel, after which he settled in Auckland and carried on business as a builder, residing for many years at Sea eld X'iew. About 15 years ago he was returned to represent the Grafton Ward in the City Council and his attention to b : s duties was so marked that he was returned continuously until a few months ago. when, ir the triangular tight for the Mayoral chair, he was defeated. As a member of the Domain Board, Mr Hewson did excellent service, as he was ever looking after the interests of cricketers. The fact that uch a handsome pavilion now adorns the ground is greatly due to Mr Hewson’s efforts. He was also an enthusiast in the matter of securing an ample water supply for the city He was also for many years a member of the Grafton School Committee The deceased leaves a widow, two brothers, and a sister.
