Kinloch. J. B. Crawford, E. G. Elliott, Nolan (2), D. Neil, J. Rao. j RECEPTION TO ADA CROSSLEY. Afiss Ada Crossley', who passed through Auckland on Monday to fulfil her Australian engagement to Air Williamson. created a very favourable impression on all who met her on that, occasion. The Alayoress of Auckland and several prominent citizens and citizeneses vitited the great contralto on board the Sierra, and with flic representative musicians of the city bade her warmly welcome. Aliss Crossley, who has none of the tremendous airs and graces which were assumed by her great soprano sister in art when she was here, talked vivaciously and amusingly to anyone and everyone, and seemed unaffectedly pleased with her welcome. Herr Benno Sehcrek. most picturesque of musicians and most delightful of eonversationilists, beamed delightedly at

the company, which, as is related elsewhere. drank champagne in a very festive manner to the helath of the star. Aliss Ada Crossley was charmingly' and suitably gowned for travelling in a dark grey tweed Russian eoat and skirt, the skirt being tueked longitudinally, and only just touching the ground. The vest was of Paris coloured net over satin. Her hat was pale blue, I think, but as it was completely covered with one of the new hem-stitched chiffon veils, I can’t tell you really’ what it was, for certain. Miss Crossley carried an exquisite bouquet of enormous dimensions, which I afterwards learnt was two joined together. They were presented to her by Airs Alitehelson and Airs Sharman, and as both were composed mainlv of daffodils and were tied with wide yellow and yellow and green ribbons respectively, they blended beautifully. She also wore a spray of violets and maidenhair presented to her by Airs Tewsley, and some veronica, brought b.v her old friend, Airs Sharman, who was an old friend of hers prior to her retirement from the stage. THE SPRING FLOWER SHOW. I was really’ disappointed to see so comparatively few ladies at the very beautiful show’ of spring flowers at the Horticultural Society on Friday and Saturday last. Such society as we have in Auckland was certainly poorly represented, which is rather a pity, as it argues that society has rather poor taste. Those who were foolish enough to ignore the show certainly missed :■ treat, for the fine collection of bloom 3 was remarkable. and Professor Thomas’ magnificent display was in itself worth going many miles to see. Air C. Hesketb, too, had some lovely’ blooms. The anemones, stocks and camellias were also lovely, and I broke the tenth commandment on the spot over a collection of fresias in pots. The afternoon tea, served in a side room, was provided by the committee, and was a model of what an afternoon tea can be made. All the cakes were home-made, as were the scones, and all were delicious —-so different from the usual dry-as-dust-any-flavour-you-will bougnt cakes. A very excellent band played a capital selection of music during the afternoon. AIRS. WINSTONE’S DANCE. On Friday, the 11th inst.. an At Home was held at the residence of Air and Airs F. B. Winstone, “Alia Alia,” Remuera, on the occasion of the termination for the ping-pong evenings of the season. An evening has been devoted fortnightly to this amusement, affording much pleasure to the young people of the district. A feature of the evening xvas the presentation to the host and hostess of :v cut-glass silver-topped ink bottle and silver photo, frame. Advantage was also taken of the occasion to farewell Air R. Finlayson. jun., who is shortly leaving for Melbourne. The ballroom was tastefully decorated with lycopodium. The music was excellent, and the floor all that could be desired. A daintily' arranged supper was laid in the diningroom. the table being artistically’ deeorated with daffodils and violets. All the arrangements were most complete, Air and Mrs Winstone doing everything in their power to make the danee successful. and it was agreed that the evening could not have been more enjoyable.

Amongst those present I noticed:—Mie Winstone, who wore a handsome white brocaded silk, with bands of pearl trimming down the skirt, white ehou on corsage: Airs (Colonel) Davis, black silk, with berthe of sequinned net and ecru lace; Airs Finlayson, blaek brocaded silk, handsome opera eloak; Airs Lovell (Hawera), blaek silk, transparent sleeves of chiffon: Aliss D. Lawson's dancing class, held last week in St. Benedict’s Hall, was a great success in every way. Over one hundred couples danced to the line music of Air E. Burke's full orchestra. Two fancy dances, performed by Ali“i Lawson’s pupils, were greatly appreciated by’ the spectators, who numbered considerably’ over 200. During the evening Aliss Lawson was presented with an illuminated address and a handsome gold curb bracelet from her pupils, as a token of esteem and goodwill. The committee, who acted as Al.C.’s, were. Alessrs E. Noonan. C. Nolan, J. Dalgety, If. Sherson, and A. Aley. September ,9th, when there was a record attendance. The weather was tine, but a very keen wind was blowing, notwithstanding which a very pleasant afternoon was spoilt. The Cambridge bund played several selections during the afternoon. In the evening the Hunt Club ball was held in the Alexandra Hall, fully 250 being present... The committee, headed by their energetic secretary, Mr. C. Buck land, worked hard to make it the success it was. The usual supper-room was set apart as a card-room for the nondauccrs, and the supper was laid in a large marquee erected for the occasion, and beautifully decorated with bu-h ferns .and other greenery. The decorations of the supper tables, three in number. were all carried nut in yellow daffodils ami narcissi, and displayed great taste in the arrangement. The supper consisted of all the delicacies of the season, and reflected great credit on the committee of ladies, under whose management it was carried out. The hall was also decorated with ferns and bunting. The music, which was exceptionally good, consisted of piano, Mrs. Lowe; bass. Mr. Edwards, - violin, Mr. Hogg: cornet, Air. C. Stewart. Amongst so many it was difficult to note all the dresses, but those I did notice were: Mrs. Con per, a lovely dress of white satin bodice, trimmed with white net and s-xtin ribbon; Airs. The Cambridge Band were to have given a concert and dramatic performance on the first night of the Loan and Mercantile ' Luge hoise sale, but owing

to the sudden indisposition of one of the leading ladies in the play it was found necessary to postpone it at the last moment, ft was a great* pity, as they would have been sure of a bumper hou-e. because there are such crowds in the town attending the sale. A most, enjoyable euchre party was given by Mrs Cussen. “The Whare.” on Friday, llth inst. (writes our Hamilton rorre.'.pondehll. Quite a novelty was introduced.
