HOCKEY.

LADIES’ HOCKEY CHAMITONSELP MEETING AT WELLINGTON. The final match was played between the Craven team from Palmerston North and the Kiwi team (Wellington). As was expected the result was a win for Palmerston by three goals to one. Neither team was at its best, the players doubtless feeling the strain of the past week. Misses E. Abraham (2) and Dalrymple scored for Palmerston and Miss A. Edwin for Wellington. The Craven players had far more combination, and their forwards. Misses Abraham, Fitzherbert, Dalrymple, Wheeler, and Pryce, were ably supported by Misses Snow, Johnson and Bagnall. The Kiwi forwards. Misses E. Rawson, Runcie, Edwin, M. and E. Bulkley, played a rattling game, but their halfbacks were no help, and' the full-backs endangered their side, not only by placing their shots badly, but by repeatedly centring in front of their own goal. At the conclusion of the match Ihe champion silver bowl was presented to Miss Dalrymple (captain of the Craven team) by Mrs Herbert Rawson. The members of the Kiwi team each received a gobi tie pin, the design being a shield with crossed hockey sticks and the dale. The latter gifts were presented by the Wellington Ferry Company as consolation prizes for the runners-up to the championship. — --u-

Interest in the tournament culminated in the representative match between the three Wellington clubs and the live visiting teams. The visitors were picked as follows: Miss Reeves (Nelson). Misses Douglas and Greaves (Hawera), Misses Bagnall and Snow (Palmerston). Todd (Napier'. Mis-es Dalrymple. Abraham and Fitzherbert (Palmerston), Simpson (Nelson), and Glenn (Hawera). The Wellington team was composed of Miss Jackson (Hutt), Misses Kennedy (Aorangi) and Matthews (Hutt), Misses Simpson and Seed (Aorangi), and B. Fitzgerald (Kiwi). Misses Edwin, Rawson. M. and E. Bulkley (Kiwi), and Heath (Aorangi), ?

The game was fast and furious throughout, and to onlookers unaccustomed to ladies’ hoekey was a great revelation. The speed, dash ami staying powers of the players were remarkable, and their knowledge of the game undeniable. Although the visitors were individually more brilliant the local team had rather more combination, and the score when time was

ealle.l stood at two goals each. According to the rules of the tournament a spell of live minutes was taken, and then the game was resumed for a further ten minutes. Kaeh side rallied splendidly, and attacked and defended fiercely, but the score remained unaltered. Wellington had rather the best of the game throughout, and should have gained two more goals, but. failed through Lad shooting on the left wing. Misses Bulkley and Rawson scored for Wellington, and Misses Glenn (Hawera) and Fitzherbert (Palmerston), tor the visitors. As the ownership of the gold pins (presented by Mr Rawson) remained undecided. it was arranged to play off on the following Tuesday, but before that date Mrs Louis Blundell generously presented eleven similar pins, and the match was abandoned. Before the visiting teams left Wellington a conference of captains was called and an Association was formed. It was agreed to hold the next tournament in Wellingt on.
