Dear Bee, July 3 The MiH-oro- Hockey Club and the Girls’ High School Hockey Club played a match on the Recreation Ground *on Tuesday.’ For the former’ Club ! the .players were Headsmen Westall and Peacock, Aliases Dewes, Jardine. Simpson, Goldsmith, Nevill, Miller, Hill, Rutherford; aild for the latter. Misses <jrjffen, Evans,, Hindmarah. Miller. Campbell, Smith, Kendall. Gilbertson and McLean.' visitors were: Mn Tanner, in a black dress, a lace cape, and a black and white bonnet; Miss Spencer had a brown dress, and a hat to match; Miss McVay looked well in deep pink cloth trhumed with lace, and a picture hat: Mis Johnston had a stylish coat of crimson cloth, a blaek dross, ami a black hat; Mrs Cecil Cornford wore grey tweed relieved with while silk, blaek hat; Miss Cornford wore a black coat and skirt, and a hat trimmed with feathers; Mrs Turnbull had a navy blue costume, and a hat to match; Miss McLvnnon looked well in black; Miss Humphries, very pretty dark blue dress; Mrs Keeping wore black, and a becoming black hat. to match; Miss Page, bright blue dress, black fur boa; Miss Kirk was also >n blue, as was Mrs Balfour; Miss Todd was in grey. The Hawke’s Bay Hounds recently met at Okawa, amt there was a lit th* of both frost and fog, notwithstanding which there was a large field, among them several ladies: Mrs Hassall. Miss Waterhouse, Miss Simcox. Miss Reynolds, Miss Russell, Miss Fitzßoy, and Aliss Beetham. Amongst the onlookers were: Mesdames Lowry, Harold Russell, G. Russell, M. Nelson. Carlyon, Misses Wiliams, Busby and Coleman. The winter race meeting was held on Tuesday and Wednesday in Napier Park. The weather was beautifully line, and many smart people were present. lhere were few accidents, out two jockeys had the misfortune to be thrown, and one of them was somewhat, seriously injured. Amongst others present were: Mrs Coleman, who wore a blue and black brocade gown, black silk capo, and black and gold bonnet with pink roses: Aliss Coleman, in a gobelin blue tweed, relieved with white and silver, and black velvet hat trimmed with feathers; Mrs Kinross White wore a handsome green costume, and a black hat; Mrs Warren was in navy blue, trimmed with black, and black toque; Mrs Logan also wore blue, and a lint handsomely trimmed with lace; Mrs Tabuteau was in a long cream coal and a becoming hat: Aliss Westall wore claret coloured clorh; Mrs Hector Smith had a blue doth ‘tucked costume, and a hat to match; Miss Seale wore a fawn iaeket over a dark cloth dress, ana a becoming black velvet hat; Airs Gordon looked well in rod relieved with white, and a red felt hat to match.

A poster and fancy dress bill, promoted by a number of citizens, was hold on the Ist inst., in the Gaiety Theatre, in aid of the funds of the Napier-Hos-pital. and was largely attended, about. 500 being present. The ball was managed by a large committee. Lady Whitmore, Lady Russell, Mesdames Henley, Hoadley. F. W. Williams, Bowen, R. B. Smith, Coleman, Cohen, Des Lisle, Nantes, McVay, Dixon, \V. Anderson, Moeller, .Edgar, P. S. McLean, Herrold, R. D. D. McLean, Moore Logan. Misses Baker ami Connor, and Dr Leahy ami Dr. Henley wore amongst those especially interested. Miss Henn’s band occupied the orchestra in a coiner of the hall, where dancing took place. The gallery was used for spectators only, and supper served at the back of the stage. The costumes were of endless variety, ami were a constant source of interest to those who witnessed the animated scene. The dresses most deserving notice were the folowing: Miss Seale’s costume, which, gained the prize for the best poster. She advertised the Trocadero, and was attired in a white, satin painted with the wares that are procurable at that establishment; Miss M. Anderson advertising J. M. Crerar and Sons, booksellers, was second; and Mrs D. A. Baxter, for the Hawke's Bay Woollen Company, third; Dr. Henley won the prize for the men's posters. He advertised the Siin Fire Office, and was dress ed as a Red Indian; Airs Henley was an effective advertisement for Music Warehouse; Miss Hall’s costume, s.s. “Tangaroa,” was capitally carried out; Mrs Moore, Excelsior Dairy Company; Mrs A. J. Williams, (.bites, Lowry and Co.’s bicycle shop; Mrs Bowen, A. IL Williams, ironmongers; Miss J. Heath looked well advertising Miss White’s millinery emporium; Miss M. Williamsn, Ocean Accident Company; Miss Siiupson, Phoenix Insurance Company; Miss McLcnnou, Napier Rowing Club; the latter wore a becoming costume of dark blue and pale blue, and a yachting cap; Mrs R. B. Smith was becomingly dressed ns “Pierrette,” in a white ami red costume; Miss Coleman looked well as a Shepherdess, in pink silk over blue

satin jadticoat; and Mis T. 11. Lowry’s costume as “Queen Maigarvt.’’ wa* both novel and effective; Miss Hundley was elegantly attired as a Spanish Dancing Girl: Miss Kathleen Hoadley was “Pierrot to’’: and Miss A.
