Alajor Coyle, officer commanding al the North Shore batteries, will shortly make a tour of inspection at various places under his jurisdiction. Air. Tolhurst, resident inspector for New Zealand of the Union Bank of Australia, came to Auckland last week from Wellington.

The new Attorney-General (Lieuten-ant-Colonel Pitt) is the first who has tilled that position since the death of Sir Patrick Buckley in 189 G.

Air Cyril Ward, son of Sir Joseph Ward, was so far recovered as to be able to leave Christchurch for his home in Wellington the end of last week. Professor Rutherford, of the AlcGill University, Canada, is a brother of Mr George Rutherford, of tile Raglan district.

A Press Association telegram states that Mr E. F. Allen, leader writer on the Wellington “Evening Post,” has accepted the position of leader writer on the Melbourne “Argus.” Mr and Mrs T. Stone, from Ashburton, Canterbury, have arrived in Hamilton Mr Stone took possession of his recent purchase of the Woodlands Homestead block on July 1. Miss Gray has been staying with Mrs. Moore, of Tennyson street, Napier, and Mrs. Edgar, of Wanganui, has been the guest of Dr. and Mrs. Edgar, of the same town.

Mr H. A. Gordon, consulting engineer to the State coal mines, has been appointed to succeed Mr G. H. Broome on the Board of Examiners under the Coal Mines Act.

Mr and Mrs S. Brown, of Wellington, join the Manapouri for a trip to the South Sea Islands. From thence they will go to Australia, returning to New Zealand in about two months’ time.

Captain George Campbell, lately the popular skipper of the barque Otago, has been succeeded to the command of the barque Quathlamba, trading intercolonially and well-known in Auckland.

Colonel Burgess, late of the Royal Artillery, is at present in Auckland. He is exploiting the fishing resources of the colony, and will be here several months. It is even probable that he may settle down in some part of the colony.

Mr Schofield, who for several years past has been connected with th. “New Zealand Times” literary department, is about to join the Christchurch “Press” editorial staff in the capacity of assistant leader writer.

The position of private secretary to the new Attorney-General—the Hon. A. Pitt —has been accepted by Mr Amelias Smith, who has had a very long experience of the work, and is well-known for his ability and courtesy.

Mr James Purnell, who has been town clerk of Wanganui for the past 2G years, and has just resigned office, was last week presented with an illuminated address and gold albert.Mrs Purnell was also presented with a handsome chain.

The new president- of the Wellington Bowling Club is Mr J. A. Plimmer. Air T. W. Hay bit tie was elected vice-presi-dent. and Air Hamilton and Mr. Grundy were re-appointed as hon. secretary and treasurer.

Mr Hueston (Wellington), who is an enthusiastic bowler, was presented by his Club (the Victoria) with a handsome silver tea service in recognition of his services as hon. secretary during the past six years.

The Wellington Ministers’ Association ent- rtained the Rev. J. Paterson (of St. John’s Church) and the Rev. C. S. Ogg (St. Andrew’s) at a farewell gathering, to mark the occasion of their retirement from parochial duties. Mrs. Armitage (Parnell) has just returned from a trip to the Thames, where she has been staying with Mrs Swindley. Mr McKenzie, of Wellington, who has been in Auckland for the past two or three months, returned to Wellington on Monday last.

A pleasant little ceremony took place recently at the office of the Wellington Education Board, when the ex-chairman, Mr J. R. Blair, was presented with a handsomely inscribed and silver-mount-ed ink-stand, a farewell gift from the members of the Board.

Mr. Arthur Holmes was last week presented with a purse of sovereigns from residents of Woodville and district. Mr. Holmes has lately resigned the post of manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Woodville, to take up a position with Abraham and Williams, Limited.

Mr and Mrs Heaton Rhodes (Christchurch) are back in New Zealand, after a six months’ visit to England. Mr. Rhodes remained in Wellington for the opening of Parliament, but Mrs Rhodes went straight on to Christchurch, to return later on for the session.

Mr Thomas Bird, road engineer for Waikato and the King Country, has been summoned to Wellington. It is understood there are likely to be some changes in the Departmental staff consequent on the retirement of Captain Turner, of Rotorua

News has been received in Invercargill of the death of the Rev. David Gordon, at North Brighton, Victoria, on June 18. Deceased was at one time minister of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Invercargill. being stationed there from 1884 to 1888.

At the annual meeting of the Victoria Bowling Club (Wellington), Air J. Mackay was re-elected President; Air McAlorran, Vice-President; Air Hueston, Hon. Secretary; and Air Norwood, Hon. Treasurer. All the directors were reelected.

At the annual meeting of the Newtown Bowling Club (Wellington), Alessrs C. Bary and H. Price were presented by the club with gold medals to celebrate their victory in the Huddart-Parker Cup, which they won outright and presented to the club.

Air Spring-Browne, second officer of the Alonowai, has been transferred to the Aloeraki in place of Air G. Hooper, who has joined the Hinemoa as chief officer. Air Wilkinson, late chief officer of the Government steamer, has retired from the service.

The Earl of Lytton, mentioned as a possible successor to Lord as Governor-General of the Commonwealth, is barely 27 years of age, and a grandson of the renowned novelist. His father was Viceroy of India for a time, and also British Ambassador at Paris.

A pleasing instance of good relationship between employers and employees occurred at the Uno Boot Factory on Saturday, when Air. E. de Afontalk, the senior partner of the firm, was the recipient of a presentation from the employees. “Lloyd’s Journal” of Alay 31 prints inquiries by a sister for Daniel Harris, of Tatwortb, Somerset, last heard of at Auckland, New Zealand, in 1875; for Wm. Higgins, who last wrote to his sister from Feilding, New Zealand, three years ago.

Air J W. Kerr, for many years a member of the Whangarei County Council, has come into a fortune through the death of a relative in Scotland. s

now in Edinburgh, and is enjoying the best of health. Before returning to Australia, where several members of his family reside, he intends to visit the principal towns of Great Britain.

Aliss Alarion Bell, who is leaving the Whananaki school to take up a position in the Rotorua school, was presented by Air J. C. Johnson, chairman of the School Committee, on behalf of the parents and children, with a cheque to mark the affection in which the children hold her. Air Walker responded for Aliss Bell.

Air Dugald Campbell, an old and esteemed resident of Port Chalmers, died at the age of SO years. He arrived at Port Chalmers jn the ship Helenslee on August 23, 1868, and in 1880 took the position of engineer to the Otago Dock Trust, which he occupied till 1895, when he retired from active service.

All- Edwin Hall, secretary of the Auckland Provincial Agricultural Association, who left here on a visit to England in February last, was to leave there on his return journey on Sunday or Alonday next. In all probability he will call at the Cape. He expects to reach Sydney by the end of August. Air. James Gray, of the firm of Reid and Gray, Dunedin, wh.-. has been on a visit to Auckland, left on July 2 for the South by the Rotoiti. During his slay in Auckland Air. Gray was confined to bed, suffering from inflammation, but has so far recovered to permit of his returning home by easy stages.

Sir James Hector, who intends leaving on the 12th July on a trip to North west America, had early and exciting experiences in British North America as a member of the Palliser expedition which left England in 1857. He named the Kicking Horse Pass, the route through which, many years afterwards, the Cana-dian-Pacific railway was taken. Captain F. W. Hutton, curator of the Canterbury Aluseum, has been advised that the British Ornithologists’ Association have conferred on him the honour of electing him a colonial member of that body. The rules of the association restrict the colonial membership to ten, to be selected from eminent ornithologists residing in the British colonies.

Faith Healer Dowie will leave America for Australia next November, arriving in Brisbane about the middle of December. He will spend Christmas with his

relatives in Adelaide. He will only hold one or two services in Australia. Air and Airs Dowie have many relatives in South Australia.

At a Court Pride of the North, A.0.F., social at Thames last week, Bro. H. Kennerley, who is resigning the secretarysnip of the lodge, was presented with a pv.rse of money in recognition of his services. Bro. Kennerley has held the post or secretary for more than ten years, and has resigned the position as he is leaving the district. Chief Ranger F. Boves made the presentation. Signor Bragato, Government viticultural expert, left Wellington for Sydney en route for Afelbourne on Saturday week. Signor Bragato’s mission to Australia is in connection with the purchase of a large quantity of phylloxeraresistant stocks for planting in the New Zealand Government’s experimental nurseries, and for subsequent distribution among vignerons. At a meeting of the ex-pupils of St. Mary’s Convent (Wellington) the following officers of the association were elect-ed:—Vice-president, Airs Chapman; committee, AhC'sdames Gamble and’ Gascoigne, Misses Sheehan, White, Redmond, Brady, Saunders and AlcDonald; secretary, Aliss Sullivan; treasurer, Aliss Duignan. It was decided to hold the annual dance during July. The late chairman of the Wellington Education Board, Air J. R. Blair, w’as presented by the office, staff and inspectors with a silver-mounted and inscribed inkstand, in recognition of the esteem in which he is held, and as a farewell gift on his retirement from the position of chairman, which he has held for so long a period.

Air C. J. Hardy. 8.A.. was re-elected President of the Alt. Cook Old Boys’ Association (Wellington). The vicepresidents are Alessrs Bird, Odlin, Langdon, and Robertson; Alessrs Midlane and Hempieman are hon. secretary and treasurer respectively. A memorial tablet and a roll of honour are to be set up to celebrate the doings of members of the Association.

Air J. C. Fraser, of the firm of Arch. Clark and Sons, Ltd., who has been transferred to Wanganui, was entertained by his friends on June 28th at the Imperial Hotel. Air. Louis Lewis, on behalf of numerous acquaintances, gave him a souvenir of his connection with Auckland in the shape of a gold watch and chain. A pleasant evening was spent musically and gastro nomically.

Air R. McGregor, the well-known football back, of the Thames, has been presented with a purse of sovereigns by his friends, on and off the field, in order to memorise his inclusion in the N.Z. team for Australia. Air W. Johnston (chairman of the local Rugby Union), in making the presentation, congratulated the recipient on his inclusion in the team, and eulogised his abilities as a footballer.

Prominent as Mr T. Kennedy Macdonald has always been in public and commercial life, his wife is nearly as well-known a figure in political and charitable work. Warm hearted and generous, no one except Airs Seddon has the same hold on the women of the Liberal Party as Airs Kennedy Alacdonald. Mrs Afacdonald’s health for the past couple of years has been indifferent, and she is now enjoying rest and change in a visit to the Alother Land along with Aliss Afacdonald.

At a social in the Panmure Public Hall on July 3rd Air. Donald AlcPherson, the popular storekeeper of that district, and Air. John Brice, his associate, were presented with tokens of the residents’ good wishes—Air. McPherson with a brass-mounted writing desk, and Air. Brice with a gold-mounted walking-stick. Air. A. S. Thompson (chairman of the Alount Wellington Road Board) presided, and Airs. W. Brown, senr. (the oldest resident), in making the presentation, regretted that Mr. AlcPherson was leaving the district, after spending nearly his whole lifetime there.

Air S. P. Evans, who filled the position of manager at the Hillside (Dunedin) Railway Workshops for the past two years, and who had occupied various positions in the workshops prior to that, was presented with an illuminated address and a pair of Goerz binoculars on the occasion of his being transferred to Auckland. Some little time ago, before the transfer was announced, Air Evans received from the workmen a gold watch

and chain. It is intended that Air Evans shall take charge of the Newmarket shops.

The Waikato hounds met at “Bruntwood,” near Cambridge, last Saturday, and enjoyed a memorable day on that and adjoining properties. There were present some fifty members and friends, who were all most hospitably entertained at the homestead by Air. and Airs. John Ross. Air. Norman Banks, the master, in a neat speech, expressed the club’s thanks to the host and hostess. Air. Frank Ross replied on behalf of his parents. Two strong hares were started during the day, and a capital run followed each.

A number of the friends of Airs Lindsay, late of the Flagstaff Hotel, Devonport, decided not to allow her to leave the district, where she has been in business for so many years, without some token of their appreciation and regard. Accordingly they subscribed and presented her with an illuminated address. The presentation was made by Airs Alanning, who referred to the great kindness, hospitality’ and sympathy she had always manifested to all with whom she came in contact.
