AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, June 9. Looking baek on ’far more years of dancing than I care to count, years wherein the debutantes of yesterday have become the lively matrons of today, and the lively matrons of two years since have become more or less staid chaperones—looking back, I say, on many, many dozens of balls in the Choral Hall, I fail $o remember one which could compare in smartness, originality, and general attractiveness with that given in aid of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Children. The secret of its success was its entire completeness, if you know what I mean. It was not, as is usually the case, that one thing was done so specially well as to invite, nay’, to command comment and commendation, but that everything was well done, just as well done, moreover, as infinite and untiring pains, combined with liberal expenditure of money could make it. For example, the floor of the Choral Hall was absolutely clean —“picture it, think of it,” incredulous woman —it sounds like romance, but it was true. The floor was, moreover, not merely scoured clean, but perhaps because of this and the removal of the accumulation of the dirt of years, it was also a good dancing floor, though, of course, without that springiness which alone makes a floor perfect. The decorations, of course, you have heard and read of. Nothing approaching them has been seen in Auckland in my time. They were really deserving of everything the most incorrigibly gushing debutante had to say of them, and to Mrs Coleman, the Ladies’ Committee, and Mr Kisby, of Tonson Garlick, and the Wallaroo bluejackets, the fullest mead of praise must be given. I am not going to redescribe them—where would be the use?—but will say that the taste displayed was admirable, and that the tout ensemble something to remember. No doubt many ladies took to heart the advice of the immortal Captain Cut tie, “When found, make note of” (or do ladies read Dickens nowadays?), and stored up details and suggestions from the general scheme for future use —I certainly did. the method of creating the stage with a literal forest of cabbage trees and bamboo being particularly clever, and the absence of the usual single nikau leaf standing in awful glory on a panel of the wall striking me as “grateful and comforting,” as the local advertisement has it. The supper, too, was excellent, though the awful inroads on the same by the unexpectedly ravenous crowd reduced it to rather forlorn proportions at a somewhat inconveniently early hour of the evening. The cotillion was, of course, the feature par excellence of the dance, and was exceedingly well done, though owing to many being unaccustomed to the figures, it was dragged out a trifle. The girls showed much greater adaptability than the men, who were apt to be self-con-scious all through. The music by Mere-

dith’s Band wag excellent, and the general arrangements beyond all praise. SUPERB DRESSES IN “ARE YOU A MASON?” Absolutely the latest creations in costumes are to be worn by the ladies of the “Are You a Mason?” Comedy Company, which opens its New Zealand tour in Auckland on Monday next. The dresses worn by the following ladies are said to be ahead' of anything previously seen hero:—

The gowns worn by Miss Ethel Knight Mollison, the leading lady of “Are You a Mason?” Company, are from the latest designs created by Madame Theresa Morgan, of sth Avenue, New York. The pastel grey crepe de chine is a masterpiece of dressmakers’ art, the lace ebenille and chiffon were dyed to order by the art dyer, Madame Pauline, of 16th Street, New York. The lace coat worn in the first act is a. direct importation from the great French modiste, Pasquiti. The jewels worn by Miss Mollison, are genuine each matching in colour the gown it is worn with. The rubies worn in the first act were given her by Mr Richard Mansfield, the great American actor, and are said to have been owned by Louis XIV., of France,

Miss Eileen Munro, who plays’ “Mrs~ Bloodgood” in “Are You a Mason?” wears in the first act a walking dress of poppy red cloth. The skirt has a yoke of the cloth, from which straps of the same material, reaching to the hem, are stitched on to the underskirt. The bodice is finished with a vest of ivory satin spotted in red, and has a small turn-over collar of cream lawn, with a scarf of black crepe de chine with long fringed ends. In Act 11. she has an afternoon toilette of heliotrope crepe de chine. The skirt is accordion pleated, with a gathered yoke. The bodiee has a deep collar s»f twine coloured lace, fringed all round, and with long ends in front. The waist licit is of three shades •f heliotrope, and is carried up the bod-

ice at back, giving a most becoming slope. In Act 111. is worn an evening gown of tucked ivory crepe de chine, the skirt having a cuirass of fine jet sequins, from which depend bunches e£ grapes of the same. The decolette bodice is composed c.’most entirely of the sequined net, aim has a larger chou of orange panel on the left of the corsage. -Miss .Molly Pearson wears a pastel blue cloth dress in the Ist act. the .skirt having the seams stitched down half way. and ornamented with hand embroidered arrow heads. The Russian blouse bodiee has an embroidered vest, finished off at the waist with a black silk belt. The dress is ornamented from the neck to the hem of the skirt in front by two lines of black and while silk buttons, and the same trimming is carrie I out in the sleeves. The hat worn with this frock is biscuit coloured crinoline, trimmed with green and black velvet ribbon, and underneath the up-turned brim is tucked a bunch of pink rosebuds. The second dress is of cream voile, trimmed with pale green miroir velvet. 'flic skirt is box pleated all round, and threaded through the pleats are two rows of velvet, sloping towards the front, where they are finished off by little bows and silk gimp ornaments. The bodiee has also a short, box pleated Zouave, over an under bodice of pale green lace, which has a" raised design of white violets over it. A collar and puffings on the sleeves of the same lace, finished off in front With velvet stoles, each ornamented with gimp drops, make a particularly dainty combination. The evening dress is of pale pink crepe de chine, gauged prettily round the hips and again at the knees. The bodice is also gauged round the shoulders, and the decolletage is trimmed with shaded banksia roses. The elbow sleeves are of aceordion pleated chiffon and roses, and a small bunch is worn on the hair. MISS STEWART’S DRESSES IN THE “NEW MAGDALEN.” The gowns worn by Miss Nellie Stewart in “The Modern Magdalen” are exceptionally beautiful, and the blending of colours in her different frocks is most artistic. In the second act she. wears a beautiful costume of white silk voile, the skirt being tucked to the knee, and inserted with exquisite ecru insertion. The simple little blouse bodice is al-o tucked, and has a transparent square yoke. The Swiss waistbelt is of deep rose-pink silk, and a chou of same shade is worn on left of corsage. With this gown is worn a most beautiful loose transparent lace coat, and a salmon pink felt hat, trimmed with two large rosepink ehoux and cream feathers. Her jewels are a deep collar of turquoises and a muff chain composed of uncut turquoises ami turquoise rings. She carries a street little pale blue chiffon sunshade. In the third act she wears a pale pink satin princess robe evening gown, cut square at the. curoat, and laced down tl»a back;' the shoulder straps arc composed entirely of single stotM diamond passementerie. There is a deep circular frill on the skirt, edged with dozens of tiny shaded chiffon frills, finished with chenille, and where the circular frill joins the skirt there is another row of passementerie. I heard someone say that in the third act Miss Stewart was bound in pink, which is, I think, a -cry neat description. Miss Stewart’s oiujr ornaments in this act are diamonds, and she wears a tiara of brilliants and some~’pink rosebuds in her hair. ' Her. costume in act four iff a loose white vrepe .de chine lea gown, confined at the. waist with' a silk plaited girdle. Over this is an overdress of white silk chiffon, embroidered with grcCn leaves and sprays of pink roses.
