City Council Election.

Unusual interest was taken in the election- of members to the Auckland City Council, which took place on April 29. THE MAYORALTY. The Mayoral issue was practically a duel between the Hon. E. Mitchelson and Mr. James Sticlibury. The first return to be completed was that of Ponsonby, and when it was seen that the Hon. E. Mitchelson had secured a majority there, in Mr. Stichbury’s own ground, it was felt that the contest was all over. This surmise proved correct, and in every ward the Hon. Mitchelson topped the poll, his majority over Mr. Stichbury being 1558. Following are the figures for the different booths:

The total of informal votes was 151. THE NEW COUNCIL. T*.ie new Council contains nine reelected members, Messrs C. Grey, J. McLeod, T. T. Masefield, P. Dignan, A. E. Glover, J. T. Julian, J. Patterson, C. J. Parr, J. Court, and six new members, Messrs L. J. Bagnall, S. C. Brown, M. Casey, Dr. Shannan, G. Knight, and W. E. Hutchison. The Mayor and ten councillors have declared themselves as favouring the abolition of the ward system, so that at next election candidates will seek election as representatives of the whole city.

The new Councillors are all wellknown men in the city. Mr S. C. Brown has had considerable experience in municipal matters as member of the Grey Lynn Council and Mayor of the borough. Dr. E. W. Sharman has been resident in Auckland for a number of years, and for several years past has held the office of health officer for the port of Auckland. Mr George Knight is in the butchery trade. the vicinity of Auckland. As chairman of the Master Butchers’ Association lie has headed several deputations to the City Council in opposition to the erection of the municipal abattoirs at Otahuhu. He has held office on the local bodies at Turua, and has been a member of the Education Board for several years, holding the office of chairman. Mr W. E. Hutchison is a ■well-known builder and contractor. He is a native of this city, but has not so far taken an active part in public life. Mr Maurice Casey is a well-known resident of Auckland. For the last three years he has been a member of .he Auckland Licensing Committee, and was re-elected at the last election.
