His "Excellency the Governor and suite embarked on their tour of the thermal district and the Main Trunk line on the Auckland section on Monday. They went by special train to Rotorua, where they put in a few days, and then go on ■with their inspection of the Trunk line. The party number about nine, and they have the promise of an exceedingly pleasant time. They will see AA'aimangu geyser, and at this time the monster is said to be very active, and the “shots” more than usually strong.

Last Wednesday Lord and Lady Ranfurly went for a motor-ear drive, and Viscount Northland and Lady Constance Knox attended a bye-meet of the Pakuranga Hounds at Pigeon Hill. Lord Northland is very enthusiastic about hunting. The Minister for Education is recovering from his attack of influenza. Mr and Mrs Busck are. staying in Wellington. Mr and Mrs Murray-Aynsley left by the Papanui for New Zealand. The Minister for Education is suffering from a severe attack of influenza.

Dr. Cahill (Wellington) is shortly leaving on a six months’ trip to England. Miss E. Lilfiton, Wanganui, is visiting friends in Auckland. Miss Calder, of Dunedin, is visiting Mrs Langmuir, of New Plymouth.

Dr. Owen was up at Rangiriri last week duck-shooting. Dr. Colvill, of Wellington, contemplates six months visit to England. Mr Cuthbert Freyburg is gazetted a cadet in the Colonial Museum.

Mrs Kight (Napier) has been visiting "Wellington.

Dr. Lewis is duck-shooting up North at present.

Miss Wyatt (Wairarapa) is spending a few days in Wellington. Mr Edward Anderson was up country duck-shooting last week. Miss Torrance is playing very well at golf.

Miss Butts is back in Wellington after a long stay in Nelson and Motlieka. Miss McLernon has returned to Napier after a pleasant visit to Auckland. Mrs Frank Bull (Wair.garo) was staying in Auckland last week.

Dr. Moore, of Napier, has gone to spend a short holiday in Wellington. Miss Vera Wilson, of Napier, has gone to stay in the country.

Miss Beetham (Masterton) is staying in Wellington with Mrs Alfred Brandon. Mrs Tole gave a tea on Thursday afternoon for gills. Mrs and Miss Abbott (Wellington) have gone Home for a trip.

Dr. Sharman’s success as a candidate for the City Council was very popular.

Mr H. Gillies won the final round of the Hargreaves’ Medal Competition at the Cornwall Links on Saturday week.

The Governor of New South Wales intends visiting Norfolk Island in May, in one of the warships. Mr and Mrs H. Greenway, formerly of Auckland, are living some distance from Adelaide.

Mr George Maclean and family (Auckland) left Liverpool at the end of March on their return journey to New Zealand. Miss Foot (Hawke’s Bay) who has been staying in Wellington for some time, has returned to her home.

Mrs Tweed (Wellington) and her niece, Miss' George, of England, have been visiting Wanganui lately.

Mr Walter Johnston (Highden) was in Wellington on a short visit last week.

Mrs Nelson (Rangitikei) is paying a visit to her sister, Mrs H. Gore, in Wellington.

Aliss Walker returned to the Thames on Saturday, after spending a few weeks in Auckland.

Mr and Mrs Harold Cooper camo down from Palmerston for the races in Wellington last week.

The Nellie Stewart season opens on May 12th in Auckland, where Miss Stewart always remains a firm favourite.

Mr and the Misses Fitzherbert (the Hutt, Wellington) have returned from their trip to Rotorua. Ali-s Malcolm, of Wellington, is visiting Hawke’s Bay, and at present is the guest of Mrs Kight, of Ta radale. Miss Cargill Ims returned to Dunedin after a visit to Mr and Mrs Cargill, of Napier.

Mr John Duthie, M.H.R., left by the Warritnoo on a brief visit to Sydney, He will return via .tuckland.

Air and Mrs AV. Thornton are leaving for America early this month. They intend making a visit of a few months. Mrs Oswin, has returned to New Plymouth after her pleasant trip to Wellington.

Mr and Mrs John Prouse and their daughter, Wellington, have booked passages for San Francisco. Mrs John Watt has returned to Wanganui from Plimmerton and Wellington, where she was the guest of Airs Vennell. Archbishop Redwood, who has been visiting Oamaru on church business, hag returned to Wellington

Mrs R. 11. Mason, Gisborne, has returned home after a short visit to Mrs Jackson, Castleelitf.

Mr Harry King, the well-known chemist, leaves on Monday next for a holiday trip to England, via America.

.Master Charlie Evans has left New Plymouth for Cambridge, where he is to take up farming.

Shipping people will regret to hear of the death of Captain Deleomyn, of the Perthshire, in London, during January. Dr. Martin (Wellington), who has been somewhat seriously ill with pneumonia, is now convalescent.

Miss E. Brabant, Wanganui, is spend ing her mid-winter vacation in Auck land.

Dr- 11. Compton Parsons, of Christchurch, was a passenger by the Zealandia for Sydney, en route to England. Mr and Mrs Percy Webster have returned to New Plymouth after their short but pleasant trip to Wellington.

Miss A. Brewster, of the Nelson College. is spending her term holidays with her mother in New Plymouth. Airs Mac Lean, wife of Dr. Mae Lean, H.M.s. Air and" Airs C. Richardson passed through Wellington on a honeymoon trip to Sydney. Mr Stanley Paul, who lias been visiting Auckland, has returned to New Plymouth.

The Rev. Charles Jordan, who was returned unopposed for the Tauranga .Mayoralty, is now embarking on his third term of oilice.

The Rev. J. J. Cairncy, of the AVaikouaiti Presbyterian Church was married to Aliss Aleck (Oamaru) a few days ago, and is now on honeymoon leave from his charge. Air Joseph Jones, who is leaving AVecdons (Canterbury) for Taranaki, was presented with a set of gold studs and links by the AVesleyan congregation, in recognition of his services as organist. Air. Louis Cohen, the well-known member of the New Zealand University Senate, is paying a visit to Sydney. Air. D. J. Nathan, of the Wellington firm, is also on a brief visit to Sydney.

Air AV Hutcheson, son of the late Patea member, accompanied by his wife are paying their friends in the southern portion of this island a visit. They were passengers by the Gothic from the Cape.

Air James Buttle, acting-general manager of the N.Z. Insurance Company, accompanied by Airs Buttle, two daughters and son, arrived by the Alararoa on Sunday from Afelbourne. They will take up their residence in Auckland.

Airs Rhodes. “ The Grange,” and Mrs Adams, of Wellington, are back alter a tour of the South Island, which included a stay of some duration at the Hermitage, Mount Cook.

The "Temuka Leader” says that, the Hon. Hall-Jones, Alinister of Public Works, has quite recovered from the effects of the accident received while boarding the train at Timaru last week.

I regret to record the sudden death of Mrs Ernest Peake, who leaves a husband and three little boys to mourn their loss (writes our Wanganui correspondent).

Dr. Cahill, who left AVellington on Saturday, on a visit to Europe, was entertained at dinner at the Wellington Club before he went by a number of his friends. Dr. Collins was in the chair.

Southern papers contain information that it is Air J. A. Kinsella’s intention to leave New Zealand in time to be present at the butter and cheesemakers’ conference in Melbourne on Alav 22.

Airs and Miss Abbot (AVanganui) and Air G. Abbot have gone across to Sydney for the winter months. Aliss L. Daniell is going to the Rangitikei district for the hunting season.

Dr. Arnold Izard, who has bee ■ studying medicine in England for some years, returned to Wellington by the Gothic on a holiday visit to his many relatives. Dr. Izard is a son of Air C. B. Izard, Ilobson-strect, Wellington.

Airs Chamberlain, eousin of Airs Henry AVilson, Ponsonby, Auckland, is at present on a visit to Auckland, and intends to cycle through the North and South Islands, and also Stewart Island, on her return to Tasmania.

Mrs J. Gray, who has been on an extended visit to Auckland, returned to Wellington on Monday by the Takapuna. Miss Trigga accompanies Mra Gray to Wellington, and then proceeds pn to Christchurch. Miss Phoebe Parsons, A.R.C.M., of .Wellington, is now in Christchurch, and took soprano solos in “Judas Maccabeus’’ at the Musical Un’on concert on the sth May. She is the guest of Mr and Mrs T. Garrard (Mcrivale).

Canon and Miss Harper <Christchurch) came up to Wellington for the wedding of Air Sandford Cox (Canon Harper’s pephew) and Miss Mollie MacGregor. Mr and Mrs Cox (Christchurch) were also present at the ceremony.

Miss Eliza Archer, a teacher at St. Matthew’s Sunday-school, is to be married, and by way of a farewell and congratulation, her fellow-teachers have made her a presentation of a fine Bet of serviette rings. Mr Geo. Maeleau who, with his wife and family, has been in the Old Country for a lengthy period, is returning to the colony, the party have left Liverpool for Canada, and expect to reach home in about three months’ time.

The position of honorary secretary to the Auckland Bowling Club has been accepted by ->ir G. A. Buttle, the committee having elected him to fill the vacancy caused by Mr Win. Elliott’s retirement.

Mr Charles Manning, well-known to anglers in the South as “Jock Scott” of the “Otago Witness,” and an equally well-known member of the “Otago Daily 'Times” staff, has just got married.

Mr A- E. Leatham, who with Mr A. D. Whatman, another member of the English cricket team, has been spending sum ■ time in deer-stalking in the colony, and has just gone Home, has expressed his intention to return to the colony.

Among the Gothic’s passengers for Auckland was the Bev. W. E. Conolly (Ireland), who is appointed to the Helcnsvillc parish of the Anglican Diocese. He is accompanied by his wife and family. Southerners who have booked passages by the Ventura outwards are the Misses I vote (2),. of Wellington; Mr Good, Mr 11. Williams, of Dunedin; Messrs Penn and Laing, of Christchurch; and Mr Matson, of Wanganui. .Mr C. E. Nicholas, the Whaiigarei postmaster, has been transferred to Tauranga. much to the regret of his friends in the Northern township, where ho has been for the past few years. He leaves for his new office on May 19. The Rev. '.I. Wilson, from the South Island, has taken up his duties in connection with the Dannevirke Wesleyan < hui <:h. The Rev. G. Cook, lately in charge, has had to undergo an operation at Auckland for an affection of the thr< at. Mr C. W. S. Cox (Wellington), who was recently married, was entertained by a number of friends at a dinner at the Royal Oak Hotel, when he was the Tecipeint of a number of presents, including some vain: ole gifts from the staff of the Bank of New South Wales. Mr Henry C. Lio, formerly Chief Justice of Samoa under the Tripaitite arrangement. and latterly Special Commissioner for the U.S.A, in the Phillipines, lias just returned from Al.inila to San Francisco on leave, after three years service. He is well known in Auckland. Afiss Murphy, of Dunedin, passed through Christchurch the other day on her way home after several months in Australia. Mi>s Alurpby lias sung with great success in Sydney cml Melbourne, and has now returned to fulfil other engagements in the South. Airs Wilson, whose husband is doctor on the Discovery, lias been the "iiest of Dr. and Mrs 'linings (Christchurch), and if, after paying other visits, there is no sign of the return of the Discovery, she will again take up s’e< nursing, the profession she followed in England. Among the clergy in Wellington for the Bible in-schools Conference, are the Bishop of Waiapu, Dean Harper (Christchurch), Rev. C. Coleridge Harper (Palmerston North), Rev. J. Campbell (Christchurch), Rev. Dr. Gibb (Dunedin). Rev. Gray Dixon (Auckland), and many others. Air John Cable, of the well-known foundry firm of Aforgan and Cable, has gone to Western Australia, and as the result, of his inquiry there he will pro-

bably remain in the State for a year or two. Mr Cable has therefore resigned his seat, on the Otago Harbour Board. Among the Auckland passengers by the Ventura for America and beyond are the Aliases H. AL and E. A. McFarlane, Mr George Niccol (the prominent shipbuilder), Mr R. Afonk (the ex-AI.H.R.), and Mr H. 11 Oxley (of Messrs Herbert Thompson and Co.).

At Karangahake on Wednesday week Mr Bert Whisker married Aliss A. Caisley, the wedding being very popular. Prior to the wedding Mr Whisker was presented by the Crown Company reduction works employees with a marble clock and other useful and ornamental articles.

At the annual meeting of the Wellington Chess Club the following members were elected: President, Air C. AV. Benbow; vice-presidents, Alessrs A. J. AlcTavish, A. Littlejohn, W. Barraud, C. Richardson, G. Wright, and E. Petherick; hon. secretary' and treasurer, Air AV. E. Mason.

It is said that Air Alexander Knight, for many years a resident of this city, and now general manager for Bing, Harris & Co., has benefited under the will of his late father-in-law, Air. Rutherford having bequeathed him one of his three estates, the Castle Rock sheep run, near Pleasant Point, Canterbury.

Lieut. A. J. Alarsack (brother of Dr. Alarsaek), who is concluding a round-the-world tour, is to be a passenger for America by the Ventura Air James Webster, who has been touring the South,, and is also on the latter end of a world journey, is returning by the same ship.

It is rarely that one sees a cleric in the position of a volunteer captain, but the Rev. Air Innes-Jones has been appointed to the command of the Feilding Mounted Rilles, and the Rev. J. L. Dove commanded the Hunterville Atounted Rifles til a few days ago. Tourists calling at Alessrs Cook's office during the past week have included Alessrs G. Al. Palmer (London). J. I’.

Houston (Belfast), AV. Dal Moore (Manchester), and Air Somerville Alaekay (Edinburgh). All these "entlemen are visiting the thermal district, and travel overland to Wellington. The Rev. AA T . Wills, who has just been appointed Alethodist pastor at Kiwitea, Feilding, was married at Alotueka on Tuesday week to Aliss Ruth Deck, youngest daughter of Air and Airs Jas. G. Deck, of Woodlands, Alotueka. Air AA’ills was until recently stationed at Alotueka.

Air J. R. Blair, who has been a member of the Board of Governors of Wellington College and the Girls’ High School nearly seventeen years, for a great part of which time he has been chairman, has severed his connection with that body, as he has ceased to be chairman of the Board of Education.

Air George Warren, the well-known dentist of Auckland, leaves by the Gothic on May 28th for London and New York, where he will prosecute his studies in dentistry’. Air Warren has taken an active part in dramatic and operatic work in different portions of the colony, and during his absence will be very much missed.

Air John Marshall has been presented with a picture of his racehorse. Cannongate. 'The painting is beautifully' done by Aliss Alorton, and is a very life-like studv of the racer’s head, painted on a pallet. The ladies of Otahuhu and Epsom presented the picture in grateful acknowledgment of Air Alarshall’s gift to their stall at the Alaori Girls’ School Bazaar.

Consul-General and Airs Dillingham have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in the bereavement which has fallen to them in the death of Airs Dil-

lingham’s father, the Hon. Richard G. Sneath, which occurred in San Francisco on Sunday. Air Sneath was a fortyniner, ami was one of California’s most prominent and successful men. and was, on different occasions, honoured with high positions of trust and honour.

The Premier has in his possession a telegram he received on January Ist, 1891, from the late Hon. A'.'. Swanson, M.L.C., as follows:—“R. J. Seddon, Esq., M.H.R., Kvmara, —All mine and me of thine and thee wish good and nothing sinister, and hope this year to see or hear you have become a Minister. —W. Swanson.” Twenty days afterwards Air Seddon was sworn in as Minister for Public Works.

Colonel Bailey, who recently retired after being for 18 years in command of the South Canterbury district, was recently given a marble chock and a purse of sovereigns by the volunteers. Colonel Porter made the presentation, and spoke eulogistically of his ex-brother officer.

Air James Hislop, a Dunedin architect, who makes a specialty of theatre designing, has been studying the theatres of the Commonwealth. Air Hislop recently transformed the Princess Theatre of Dunedin from something resembling a wind-swept barn to a comfortable, commodious, and handsome theatre.

A Southern paper says that Air. AV. H. Simpson, of Canterbury, who has been studying medicine for several years at Edinburgh University, has just passed his final examination in surgery, with firstclass honours, securing the high average of 84 per cent. He is to sit next month for his final examination for the degree of Bachelor of Aledicine, and, if success ful, will spend two or th.e years in the London and Continental hospitals before returning to New Zealand.

Airs Lingard, wife of the A'en. Archdeacon Lingard (Christchurch), passed away last week after a lingering illness, and though the deepest sympathy is felt for the Archdeacon and the Alisses Lingard (one of whom only returned from Germany a fortnight ago l , death came as a happy release to the deceased lady. Iler kindness and charity in former days will long be remembered by many in St. Luke’s parish, writes our Christchurch correspondent.

On Friday week, at the invitation of Mr and Mrs S. Walker, a large number of friends assembled in the Papakura Hall to celebrate their silver wedding. The hall was prettily decorated The Rev. T. Norrie proposed the health of the host and hostess, and Air Walker suitably responded. The presents received on the happy occasion were both numerous and beautiful Ou Alonday week Air and Airs AValker entertained the members of the band at their residence, and a very pleasant evening was spent. Air A. Kidd has disposed of the Commercial Hotel to Air Atkin, late of Crosby’s Hotel, Paeroa, who was formerly chief purser on the Alonowai, and also on the P. and O. boats. It may be mentioned that Air Kidd possesses the record as a holder of a continuous license, having been in the Commercial Hotel twenty-seven years, during which time he has filled many public positions, culminating in his election to the House of Representatives. It will be remembered that during the election campaign Air Kidd stated that he intended to retire from business. The serious illness of Airs Kidd necessitated this step being taken a little earlier than was at first intended. He will, however, remain in possession of the hotel until some time in June. Under the terms of sale the Commercial Hotel will still remain one of the free houses of the city.

A social gathering of the members of St. Peter’s Presbyterian Church choir was held last Friday to bid farewell to Aliss Roberta Sommerville, second daughter of the Rev. R. Sommerville, who is leaving shortly to be married to Air John AVilson, solicitor of Johannesburg, formerly of Auckland. Air J as. AlcKerras, choirmaster and organist of the church, presented Aliss Sommerville on behalf of the choir with a beautiful oil painting, a bush scene of AAaitakerei (the work of Afiss McLellan, a choir

member), as a token of the esteem in which she is held. He also spoke in eulogistic terms of their sister members, and the loss sustained by the choir in her departure. Aliss Sommerville, with her sister, leaves by the s.s. AVaikare, on Alonday for Sydney and hence to South Africa.

Yachting enthusiasts will welcome the arrival in New Zealand of Dr. Reid Alaekay, who was a passenger by the Gothic, and intends to reside in the colony. Dr. Alaekay was present at both the latter attempts t-o get back the America Cup, being physician to Sir Thomas Lipton, and was on board Shamrock 11. when she met with the accident at the time that His Afajesty King Edward was present as Sir Thomas Lipton’s guest, and so narrowly escaped injury. Dr. Reid Alaekay, who is a son of the late Dr. W. P. Alaekay, of Hull, has travelled round the world before settling in New Zealand, but he has not yet decided in what part of the colony to practise.

Mr G- W. Allaop, architect, who has t>een appointed instructor of the building construction classes at the Auckland Technical School, was himself a student for two years at the same school. He then went to London, where he studied for four years at the Polytechnic, the chief technical school in England, and was the whole time under Mr Charles F. Mitchell, the headmaster, and author of the standard building construction books. Mr Allsop, with his modern knowledge of technical training, should prove to be a useful addition to Mr George’s staff of instructors.

Mr A. N. Jamieson, who for many years filled the position of mine manager to the Hauraki Gold Mining Company, was last week at Coromandel presented with a handsome gold watch, bearing a suitable inscription, from the past and present employees of the company. The gathering was held at the Golconda Hotel and was presided over ty Mr Archibald McNeil, battery manager. The presentation was made by Mr F. Audley. Mr Jamieson, in reply, thanked the donors for their kindly expressions, and referred to the good feeling existing between the company’s employees and the management.

Amongst passengers from the South on Monday by the AVaikare were Mr F. Baden-Powell (brother of MajorGeneral Baden-Powell) and his wife. As the escritoire intended for presentation to the hero of Maieking is still at the Art Gallery, the committee deemed it advisable to call upon Mr and Mrs Baden-Powell and invite them to inspect the present. By appointment, Mr and Mrs Baden-Powell visited the Municipal Buildings on Monday, where they were met by the following members of the committee: Messrs H. lu. Smeeton. J. W. Sehackelford (secretary), AV. Berry, W. Beaumont, AV. Caughey, and J. P' Hooton. The visitors -were escorted to the Mayor’s room, where they were welcomed by Mr Alfred Kidd, who subsequently led the wav to the Art Gallery, where the escritoire was duly examined. Mr Baden-Powell expressed gratification at the beauty of the woods, the artistic nature of the design, and the excellence of the workmanshi >. When looking at the coat of arms, Mr BadenPowell explained the family motto to read: “Where prudence is, there is safety.” The heroic defence of Mafeking was therefore the result of the commander following out his famib- motto. Mr Baden-Powell was especially interested to learn that the present was the result of shilling subscrintions, showing. as it did, the widespread kindly feeling to his brother. His Worship the Mayor also showed the visitors around the gallery.
