Mr E. B. Parsons, of the Auckland Gas Company, left Auckland for the South on April Bth. Mr Donnelly (Napier), the owner of Oingo, is staying at the Northern Club during the holidays. Miss Walker, Thames, is making a short stay in Auckland, having come up for the Easter races.

His Worship the Mayor, Mr A. Kidd, has gone to his private house at Waiuku for the holidays. Mrs. McCallum (Wainrate) is staying with Miss Connal, Canal Reserve, Christchurch, for Easter. Mr McCallum, who has been Mayor of Blenheim for two years, has decided not to seek re-election.

Professor Easterfield, who has been spending a holiday in Hawke’s Bay, has returned to Wellington. Mrs. Logan (Dunedin) is in Christchurch for- Easter, the guest of Mrs. W. J. Bruce, Latimer Square.

Mr. and Mrs. Alistei- Clark (Melbourne) have gone to Auckland to stay with Mrs. E. D. O’Rorke.

Mrs E. S. Rutherford, Kekerangu, has returned home from a visit to her mother, Mrs Speed, in Pieton, and her sister, Mrs Howard, in Blenheim.

Mr. James Cowan, of the Tourist Department, is preparing books which will

be shortly issued, dealing with legends of the Rotorua and West Coast Maoris.

Elijah N. Kearny leaves Auckland next week upon his missionary journey throughout New Zealand and Tasmania, en route for Athens and Jerusalem. Mr and Mrs John Duncan, the “Grove,” Picton, have been calling on their many friends in the Pelorus Sound by steam launch, and had a good time. Mr T. K. Skinner, his mother, and his sister-in-law, Mrs W. Skinner, all of New Plymouth, have gone to Sydney, The first-mentioned is going on to England.

Archdeacon S. Williams is reported to have offered to supplement by £lO each per annum the stipends of Maori clergymen in Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay.

Mr and Mrs Strachan, Nelson, spent a day or two with Mrs H. Howard at Springlands, Blenheim, on their return from Picton last week, ere returning home.

Mr Wood, late lieutenant in the Wellington Naval Garrison Artillery, was given a farewell social by the members of his corps prior to his leaving for Penang and the East. Dr. J. Elliott, who has just comb out from England to undertake the duties of assistant fo Dr. Ewart, of the Wellington Hospital, is a son of the Rev. J. K. Elliott, of Wellington.

Air Alfred Eord, A1.1.G.E., M.S.A., etc., has taken up his residence in Wellington to superintend the management of the Welsbach incandescent light throughout New Zealand. The Rev. Dr. Hooper, well-known in the Waikato Anglican Churches, is said to have completely recovered from cancer, after an operation. The cancer was fortunately a small one. Air Barlow, of the Blenheim Post and Telegraph Office, is in Pieton, relieving Air Lecocq, who is enjoying his annual month’s holiday, part of which he is spending in the Pelorus Sound.

Mr E. D. Hoben, who has been paying a holiday visit to Wellington, has returned to Sydney, where he is on the staff of one of the leading papers. The Rev. Dr. Moulton, from Sydney, accompanied by' his wife and two daughters, are staying with Airs F. J. Alatthews, of Jervois-road, Ponsonby, prior to their departure for the Islands.

Air. and Airs. W. 11. Clark, Christchurch, are leaving for a trip to England, and were entertained at a social by a number of their friends in the Durhamstreet AVesleyan schoolroom last week. Mrs. and the Alisses Winter, of Adelaide, have been in New Zealand for the summer. They are now at Aberdare House, Christchurch, visiting old friends, and talk of returning home after Easter. Air .Tames N. Tait, who has so successfully managed Aldlle. Dolores’s lengthy Australian and New Zealand tours, leaves for Rondon by the Sonoma, which sails from Auckland on the 17th April.

Mr F. Alandcr, A1.1f.R., for Whangarci, and Air R. Rayburn, manager at the northern township for the Northern S.S. Co. were in Auckland for the Easter holidays. They' were staying at the Royal.

Mr George E. Baker, who has been attached to the Reuter staff for several years, has been appointed to take charge of the head office in AVellington during the absence of Air Harrison in Nil rone. Among New Zealanders in South Africa is Air L. AV. R. Ale-Bath, son of the chief postmaster at Christchurch, who is now to the Central Diamond Syndicate, Orange River Colour, South Africa.

At the termination of “The Stabat Mater” concert at His Majesty’s Theatre last night several of the friends, at the invitation of Air. T. Tobias, met at supper on the singe to wish success to Aliss Tobias in her future career. Miss Williamson and Aliss King (England). who have been tonring New Zealand. leave Auckland by the mail steamer for Sydney next week. Miss Williamson intends visiting India and Japan before returning to England. Air S. St rat ford-Dugdale, of London £wi!h his valet), who has been staying at Ihe Royal Hotel, has gone on an Easter visit to Rotorua. He returns to Dunedin in a few days. He recently arrived from a tour of Fiji.

Air Harold Bannister (Wellington). who is shortly to be married, was the recipient of a presentation from the staff of Murray, Roberts and Co. Mrs W. Bloomfield is the winner of the prize given bv Mrs AleCosh Clark, the captain of the Ladies' Golf Club. Miss Gwen. Gorrie. who camo second, is playing remarkably well at golf this season.

Mr and Mrs G. Hunt (Auckland) were passengers to England by the Paparoa on a six months' trip. Mr Hunt was formerly- accountant of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Shipping Company.

The Rev. W. and Airs. Bauniber returned somewhat suddenly from what would otherwise have been a pleasant trip to the West Coast but for the loss of their luggage, which has all the appearance of being stolen in transit.

Aliss Stud holme (Waimate) has Ijeen staying in Christchurch with Airs. Boyle, prior to leaving for South Africa to be married. Her father accompanies her on her travels, and Aliss Gilbert also goes with her as companion.

Air Davis, late third engineer on the AVestralia, has been appointed second oa the Zealandia. The vacancy on the AA’estralia has been filled by’ Air Scott, formerly of the Zealandia. Air Horboraugh is now third engineer on the Zealandia.

Air James AfcKerrow, ex-Surveyor-General, is leaving with Airs AlcKerrow for a trip to England by the next Vancouver steamer. Air AleKerrow has not visited the old country since his departure from there forty years ago.

Air G. P. Donelly came up to Auckland for the Easter races, having brought two of his racers with him. One of them (Awahuri) came first in the Autumn Hurdle Race on Easter Monday, and also was a winner at the previous Saturday's meeting.

Air Alorris Fox, who is leaving AVellington for England on a visit, acts in America as the New Zealand Government’s representative at (he fourth International Conference of Actuaries in New York. Air Fox is the Government Actuary.

Air and Airs C. (Al’Alillan, of this city, intend to pay a visit to Europe, leaving Auckland by tile Sonoma. They' will in all likelihood be away from Auckland about nine months, and return home by way- of the Nile and Egypt.

Air Kenneth AL Graham, well-known on the Thames, who has been in charge of the metallurgical department of the Otago School of Alines for the past six months, has been appointed, to take charge of the battery and gold-saving works at Skipper’s .Point, Central Otago.

The Rev. Walter Hueketr. of the L.M. S., is at present on a visit to Auckland. He preached on Sunday morning at Beresford-street Church. Aleetings in connection with the L.AI.S. will be held during the week. Air Huekett has been in the mission work both in Madagascar ami Samoa. Air John William Hewson announces himself as a candidate for Alayoral honours, claiming that he has merited the trust of (he ratepayers by- serving them well for the past 15 years. Air Hewson has. unfortunately for himself, been laid up for the past couple of weeks, which lias seriously handicapped his candilit me. Prior to departure from AVaihi for the Gid Country Air T. Gilmour was presented with a photographic shield by the School of Alines Council and staff. Air Gilmour is president of the council. Air Benge presided, and Air Phillips (Mayor) made the presentation. Eulogistic speeches were made by the Revs. Brodie, Banks and Johns.

A Johannesburg correspondent writes to th'e "Westport News’’:—-The Premier has recommended that Colonel Bauchop and Captain Todd be sent to Somaliland as special service officers. This is in connection with the offer of a company of New Zealand scouts for Hie campaign. As everything in connection with the expedition is being arranged in India there is no likelihood of any over-sea colonials being allowed to take part.

Mr J. R. Blair, a well-known resident of AVellington, has lately returned from South Africa, where he has been visiting relatives. Air and Airs Blair have benefited very much in health during their six months’ trip, and while in South Africa saw many of the historical scenes of the late war.

Mr J. P. Hallahan, of the Robinson Gold Mines, Kanowna, W.A., is making a Hying trip through New Zealand on his way to England, via America. Air Hallahan will eatch the next San Francisco mail steamer at Auckland, and intends to spend some time in the United States.

Air G. R. Nazer, who has taken up his residence in Wellington, was presented by the staff of the New Zealand Fanners’ Co-operative Association. Christchurch, with a gold match box and sovereign case as a souvenir of the esteem in which he was held in Christchurch.

Air Rowley, organist of St. Thomas’ (Anglican) Ch arch, Newtown, AVellington, has just left on a six months’ trip to England, travelling by the “ic” line from Sydney. Both the choir of St. Thomas’ and the staff of the Labour Department {with which Air Rowley is connected) presented him with"souvenirs of their esteem before he left.

Last Friday- evening a presentation w-as made by the people of AVakarara, Hawke’s Bay, to Air and Airs Fleteher, who are leaving that township. Mrs Fleteher was the recipient of a gold bangle, set with opals and pearls, and Air Fletcher of a silver cigarette case. After the presentation a danee was held, which lasted until the small hours of the morning

Air Arthur Rosser and Airs Rosser left for the South last week. The Court of Arbitration opens in New’ Plymouth on April 15th, and Air Rosser w ill appear in the carpenters’ and painters’ disputes on that and following dates. At the conclusion of these disputes the Court comes on to Auckland for a

special sitting in connection with the furniture trades breach.

Air George Graham, an old Marlborough settler, died a few days ago at the age of seventy-seven. Air Graham, who arrived at Lyttelton from England in 1563, lived for a few months in Canterbury, and then settled in the Blenheim district, where he resided ever since. His farm, on the Old Renwiek road, has been for years one of the model farms of Marlborough. The Rev. H. L. Blamires, whose place at Hamilton the Rev. Air Pinfold is taking up, was tendered a complimentary social by- the congregation at Hamilton previous to his departure. Air Blamires takes up a church at Gore. The Rev. H. Begg, of'Gore, whose work Air Blamires is taking up, was given a similar compliment at Gore before he and his wife left for Freeman’s Bay, where Air Begg has gone on circuit.

Inspector Tunbridge, who is resigning the Commissionership of Police, gives me authority to state that he is not a candidate, nor does he intend to be. for the position of Inspector-General of Police in New South Wales or any office connected with any police department in the Commonwealth. He has arranged to return to England shortly- after

the arrival of his successor. Inspector Dinnie, in this colony, says our Wellington correspondent.

The Rev. J. E. and Mrs Moulton sailed by the Rotokino for Tonga on Saturday, Mr Hamilton Hunter, C.AI.G., British resident at Tonga, being also a passenger by the same boat. Captain W. J. Newton, who was in command of the ship, transfers to the Ilauroto at Sydney.

Mr T. E. Dojme, Superintendent of the Tourist Department, accompanied by Mr T. Pringle and Mr J. Cowan, has returned to Wellington from an extended tour in the South Island. The party spent several days in the Queen Charlotte and Pelorus Sounds, and then went by coach from Havelock, through the Rai Valley, to Nelson, going thence to Westport via the Buller Gorge, and on to Reefton, Greymouth, and Hokitika.

Passengers from Wellington to Australia, en route for England, ete., by the Victoria, included Mrs and Miss "Bell (Nelson), who are going to Mauritius. Dr and Mrs Saunders (Wanganui), who intend to travel in the East; Mr F. IV. Rowley, who is on a six months' trip to England, as is also Mr G. Norbury; Mrs Marks and Miss Irene Marks, who have been at Rotorua for medical treatment, and are now returning to Sydney; Mrs and Misses Caselberg. who arc en route to South Africa; and Mr R. Govett, who is off Home for a trip.

An extremely smart ball was given on the 3rd inst. in the Drill Hall, Hastings, Hawke’s Bay, by the Hawke’s Bay Polo Club. The room was decorated with great taste, and dancing was kept up with spirit until a late hour, the music being supplied by Miss Caulton’s splendid band. Extras were given by Mesdames I. H. Lowry, Reid and Miss Masemore. The bail made a pleasant termination to the polo tournament, which had been taking place during the week, and in which players from Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch, Palmerston. Rangitikci and Gisborne took part.

At a “social” given in his honour by the employees of the Wellington Woollen Company, Mr H. R, McGowan was presented with a set of table cutlery and a silver biscuit barrel on the occasion of his approaching marriage to Miss Blow. Musical and other items were capitally given by Messrs Corbett, Chipper, Main, Bourne, Brewer, Wiseman, Ward, Smith, Exley, etc., and Mr McGowan’s health was enthusiastically drunk. Mr McGowan has also been the recipient of a silver tea service from the Willington College Old Boys’ Association of which he was secretary.

On the occasion of his leaving Wellington for Wanganui, Mr Joseph Westley, of the New Zealand Insurance Co., was presented with a handsome mahogany case containing a set of silver dessert knives and forks. Mr C. J. Cooper, of the Liverpool and London and Globe. Companies, made the presentation on behalf of the official staffs of the various insurance companies, and heartily congratulated Mr Wesney on his preferment, at the same time expressing the sincere regret of all present at the departure of Mr Wesney from Wellington, where he has made hosts of friends. Air Wesney, having responded, he was given three, rousing cheers, and the meeting broke up with many’ farewell good wishes.

Among the passengers by the s.s. Athenie, which arrived at Wellington from London recently, was Miss Edith Whitelaw, L.R.A.M., of Auckland. Miss Whitelaw has for the past four years been studying music at the Royal College of Music, London. At the end of her second year at the college she gained an exhibition awarded for distinction in violin playing, and last December slio qualified by examination for the degree of Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Alusic, being, we. believe, the first New Zealand lady violinist to achieve that honour. Miss Whitelaw has returned to Auckland, and will at once resume her occupation as a teacher of the violin.

The many friends of Nursing Sister G. H. Webster, formerly of Christchurch Hospital, will be interested to hear something of her career sines leaving Lyttelton by the s.s. Lincolnshire in January, 1900, with three other nurses for South Africa. Nurse Webster was stationed at Mooi River Hospital for two years, and

then joined the S.A.C. Hospital at Potchefstroom, where she did much good work for another year. She then returned to Australia, to be married to the Rev. Dr. Morley, we.L known throughout New Zealand, the ceremony taking place in Melbourne on the 20th March. Nursing Sister Webster has gained the Queen’s medal (Queen Victoria) and present, the King’s medal, and the war gratuity. Of the others, Nurse Peter returned to New Zealand after a year, her health being very indifferent; Nurse Hiatt returned some months ago, and is shortly to be married, and Nurse Littlecott came back on a short visit to her friends, returning to Durban, where she is private nursing.

Sergt. C. W. Hendry, who has been transferred to Wellington from Auckland, was the recipient last week of a case, of silver-mounted pipes suitably inscribed as a mark of his esteem and popularity among his colleagues in the force. The gathering took place in the Police Barracks, and the presentation was made by Detective Henderson, who referred to the sergeant’s helpful treatment of the junior members of the force. Sergt. Hendry suitably acknowledged the gift, and the evening concluded with a pleasant social gathering, vocal items being rendered by Constables Aloriarty, Ramsay, Hollis, Bensemen and Murphy.

Mr Richard Monk, who for ten years represented the Waitemata electorate in the House of Representatives, and who retired at last election, is to be entertained at a banquet at Warkworth ia recognition of his services. An illuminated address and a book containing the signatures of 745 subscribers to the testimonial are to be presented to Mr Monk. The address states that the subscribers, irrespective of any political party, desire to offer Air .Monk their sincerest thanks for his faithful services, and to congratulate him on the able and diligent manner in which he has always discharged his onerous and important Parliamentary duties.

It is understood in local political circles that Air John Duthie will in the new Parliament fill the role of Leader of the Opposition. His probable leadership of the party is viewed with disfavour in many quarters, his long-stand-ing hostility to the Premier being urge 1 as weighty ground against his assumption of that office. The general feeling in Opposition circles is that Air Allen or Air Alassey would be more acceptable to the party, both in and outside of the House. An Opposition member informed me that Air Duthie would not be able to conciliate waverers or bring adherents to his side, and that personally he did not approve of Air Duthie’s elevation to the leadership. He preferred Air Allen, who he asserted, would make an excellent leader. —-Wellington correspondent.

Airs J. S. Hope, who for many years has taken a lively interest in work amongst the young people of the Waitekauri Sunday-school, was tendered a farewell social in the Waitekauri Hall. Air Cockburn, superintendent of the Sunday-school, presented Airs Hope with a beautifully illuminated address from the parents of the scholars, and with a volume of Dr. Bonor’s from the teachers of the Sunday-school. On Sunday’ last, at the conclusion of the Sunday’ week, at the conclusion of the Smiintendent) presented Alisa Alice Noakes with a lovely set of silver-mounted, ivory-handled earvers, on behalf of the teachers and scholars of the Sun-day-school. He. congratulated the recipient on her approaching marriage with the Rev. W. B. Scott, and wished her God speed and every blessing and success in her new sphere of labour in Canterbury.

The will of the late Sir Frederick Sargood has been lodged in Alelbourne for probate. Under the will, which bears

the date of August 3, 1896, and a codicil, dated October 23, 1899, he makes bequests of the insignia of St Alichael and St George, the sword presented to him by’ the St Kilda Battery of Artillery, his volunteer order, signet ring, diamond ring, diamond stud and watch to his various sons, and certain small bequests to his other partners. A sum of £15,000 is directed to be set aside, and the income thereof paid to Lady Sargood during her lifetime. The residuary estate is to be divided equally between Lady Sargood and the testator’s children. The sons obtain their shares absolutely. The shares of Lady Sargood and daughters are to be invested and the income thereof paid to them during life. The

daughters’ children become entitled to their shares in remainder, and Lady Sargood’s share on her death falls into the residue for the benefit of testator’s children equally. The approximate valu> of the estate is .£680,000, made up as follows:—Victoria, £268,335; New South Wales, £150,000; Western Australia. £60.000; New Zealand, £201,665.
