Among the passengers to Sydney by the Zeaiaudia was Mr McManus, of the Caledonia Hotel, who has gone oS on a health trip. Mr M. A. Jennie, the well-known Auckland yachtsman, has practically decided to take up his residence in Marlborough. The Hon. J. A. and Mrs Tole intend visiting the upper reaches of the Wanganui, and may return to Auckland overland by Rotorua. Mr Eugene Lehman, of the class of 1902, Yale, is the first American eoHegian to secure a Cecil Rhodes scholarship. By the steamer Victoria, which arrived at Bluff on Monday, Sir Joseph Ward, La'ty Ward, and Mss Ward were passengers. Mr. C. W. Russell, of the American Tobacco Company, leaves Auckland on Monday next for Sydney, where he will join the s.s. China for England. Mr P. M. Hansen, general manager of the Auckland Electrical Tramway Company, has returned from his business trip to the South Miss L. M. Smith, of Christchurch, has been appointed editor of the “White Ribbon,” the organ of the New Zealand Women’s Christian Temperance Union. The Rev. Mr Hawthorne, who went away as chaplain of the Tenth Contingent, has returned to Auckland. It is said that he will resume his vicarship at Trinity Church, Devonport, The Rev. Mr Read, wife and family are proceeding to Sydney by the Sonoma to join the Runic. They will be accompanied by Mrs Fenwick, of Paparoa.

The Pope’s benediction at the jubilee festival has been phonographed* and His Holiness has authorised its reproduction on cylinders and their sale in aid of charities. Colonel Bell, whose former visit to New Zealand was cut short by an important call to Australia, will resume his lecturing tour of this colony next month. Mr T. Booth, who has represented Richmond Ward on the Grey Lynn Council, has been granted leave of absence for the rest of his term of ofiue, in order to allow him to visit England. A silver medal and certificate are to be presented to Mr Henare Kohere, who distinguished himself so signally by saving life at the wreck of the scow Whakapai at East Cape some time ago. MX and Miss Chamberlain, of Hove, England, wear. up to Rotorua on Tuesday, en route for Wellington via Wanganui. They will also tour the South Island. Mr Miller, of Southport, is making the some trip. It is probably that Mr S. J. Jago, Chief Postmaster at Wellington, who is to retire in June, will be succeeded by Mr J. A. Hutton, at present Chief Postmaster at Timaru, and formerly at Oamaru. Captain J. C. Blacklock, of the Northern B.S. Co., leaves by the Waikare on Monday for Sydney, where he will join the China for London. The captain, who will be accompanied by his wife, will bring the company’s new steamer out to this colony. Mr Thomas Kirk, who is leaving Hamilton after being there as Clerk of the Court for 27 years, was officially farewelled by the Mayor of the borough, and Mrs Kirk was presented with a purse of sovereigns subscribed by the townspeople.
