Misses Louisson (Christchurch) have been visiting Wellington. Miss Cobb (England) has been the guest of Mrs Pearce (Wellington). Dr. Fookcs, of New Plymouth, is visiting Auckland and Rotorua. Mr E. Waymouth has been re-eleeted as auditor of the Chamber of Commerce.

Miss Pile (Opotiki) is on a visit to Mrs Maunsell, Hamilton. Colonel and Mrs Allan Lyle (England) have been visiting Wellington.

Miss Warnock (Auckland) has been spending a holiday with Mrs Holloway. Miss Thompson (Auckland) is staying with her friends in Hamilton.

Mrs. John Bidwill (Wairarapa) was in Wellington last week. Miss Wilson, from Dunedin, is visiting Mrs. Kerr, of New Plymouth. Mrs and Miss Higginson are probably going Home by the Rimutaka early this month. Mr and Mrs Graham and Miss Graham have left Wellington and gone home to Dunedin.

Mrs Bean (Christchurch) has been staying with her parents, the Right Hon. R. J. and Mrs Seddon.

Miss McClatchie (Christchurch) paid a visit to Wellington in order to be present at the Ziebe-Gilmer wedding. Miss Atkinson and Miss Waldegrave are back in Wellington after a round of visits in the South Island.

Mrs and Miss Tucker, of Melbourne, are paying a visit to Sirs McCosh Clark, Remuera, Auckland.

Misses G. and J. AlcKellar, of New Plymouth, have been on a visit to Wanganui, but have now returned.

Mr Andrew Hanna, solicitor, of Auckland, left by the Zealandia on a visit to Sydney. Mr George Grigsby, manager of Collins Bros., Auckland, and Mrs Grigsby leave this month on a visit to England. Mt and Mrs Oliver Nicholson, of Auckland, were passengers from Sydney by the s.s. Westralia. Mrs Barlow has returned to Blenheim after a visit to her sister, Mrs Green, “The Sands,” Nelson.

Miss Julius, Christchurch, has gone on a visit to her sister, Mrs. A. S. Elworthy, Pareora.

Mr McKinnon, accompanied by Miss McKinnon, left Napier by the Zealandia for Auckland, en route to Great Britain. Mrs Dawson, wife of Lieut. Dawson, of H.M.s. Wallaroo, is on a visit to Miss Seymour, in Pict on.

Dr. Bett has been appointed assistant house surgeon at the Christchurch Hospital.

Mr. Biss, engineer-in-charge of the Auckland section of working railways, is in the South on departmental business.

Miss Kathleen Mathias has just returned to Raglan, after a holiday with Mrs O’Neill, Claudelands, Hamilton. Sir William and Lady Russell, with their two daughters, have been paying a visit to Wellington. Miss Edwards, of Nelson, has been visiting Airs. C. Arden, of New Plymouth, but has now returned.

Mrs and Miss Wood, of Napier, are spending a holiday with friends in Auckland.

Mrs. Hempton and Mrs. W. Newman have returned to New Plymouth after their pleasant trip to Auckland.

Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Anderson, Christchurch, have left the city for Auckland for a two or three weeks’ visit. Mrs. W. Bond (Lawford) and her sister, Miss Elworthy, Christchurch, are visiting in Dunedin. At the meeting of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Soldiers’ Graves Guild, Miss Coates was elected president and Mrs Luke secretary.

Mr B. Kent was last week elected president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, and Mr John Reid vice-presi-dent.

Mr A. E. G. Rhodes has followed Mr Wigram’s example and declined to be

nominated for the Mayoralty of Greater Christchurch. It is probable that there At the annual meeting of the Northern Club Sir John Logan Campbell was elected president, and Mt Seymour Thorne George viee-president. Dr. Bakewell has left for Wellington on a short trip for the benefit of his health. He will be absent about three weeks.

Mr R. C. Renner, of Wellington, with a party of yachtsmen, is cruising in the Marlborough Sounds in the yacht Pluritai.

Mrs Hibbert (England), who has been making a short stay in Wellington, has gone across to Nelson. Mrs Hibbert was a passenger by the Rimutaka. Mr. H. B. Kirk, ALA., is to take up his duties as professor of biology at Victoria College at the beginning of the next term, at the end of March.

Mr Bright, inspector for the Australian Mutual Provident Society, has been visiting the Marlborough ’district.

Mr George Rogers, of Blenheim, has passed the second section of his LL.B, degree, and is being congratulated by many friends. Lieutenant Davis, the mounted instructor for the North Island, has, it is understood, received intimation that his engagement has been terminated. Dr. Connolly has returned to Wanganui after spending six months at the Hot Springs. He proceeds to England shortly for a few months prior to resuming practice.

Mr and Mrs W. Crawford are back in Wellington after a trip abroad for the Coronation and the Durbar. They will spend a short time in Wellington before proceeding up-country. Mr T. A. Grady arrived by the Ventura from San Francisco. He is settling in Sydney in order to offer inducements to colonials to travel Home via the United States of America.

It is stated by an American paper that Sandow, the strong man, is going in for a public house. Looking at Mr Sandow’s income, wouldn’t it be better to call it an hotel?—and more graceful? Dr. Mason, Chief Health Officer for the colony, has left Auckland for Nelson, where he has arranged to deliver a lecture on “The Prevention of Consumption.”

Colonel Porter, C. 8., who has been appointed to the command of the Canterbury district, commanded the Seventh Contingent, and is an old Maori war officer.

Mr. Joseph Mcßrearty, son of Dr. AlcBrearty, of Greymouth, has been appointed first assistant at the Glasgow Dental Hospital, which is incorporated with Glasgow University. Miss B. MTiitelaw, of Auckland, is at present on a visit to Wellington, and will await the arrival of the Athenic, by which Miss Edith Whitelaw is a passenger from England. Mr H. H. Share, who was private secretary to Sir Lewis Beaumont, returns to Sydney after a brief visit to Europe to resume the same position on the staff of Sir H. Rawson.

Mr. and Mrs. Vickers have returned to their home at Khandtillah, Wellington, after spending a pleasant holiday among their friends at Waikato, Rotorua, and Auckland. Mrs. Cory Thomas, well known in Christchurch as Mrs. Banks, arrived in Christchurch with Mt. Cory Thomas and Alias Banks from England last week, and purpose spending some time in New Zealand.

The Premier, Right Hon. R. J. Seddon, Captain Seddon, Mr. Stuart Seddon, Mr. Hamer, Mr. Stevenson, Mr. Jones, Mr. Allo, Mr. Hennah and Mr. J. H. Witheford, M.H.R., stayed at the Lake Hotel, Taupo, on their recent visit. Herr Hugo Fromholz (Berlin), who is visiting New Zealand, is at present in Wellington. Herr Fromholz expresses himself greatly impressed with the scenery and natural resources of the colony. Air Hubert H. Dacre, who has for the past five years been associated with Dr. Maitland, dental surgeon, will commence practice on liis own account in rooms over Cochrane’s mart, Queen-street, Auckland.

Miss Constance Barnicoate, representing the “Review of Reviews,” and other English papers, is touring thia colony, and has already written up several

articles for the papers she represents. Miss Barnieoaie is paying a special visit to the gumfields north of Auckland-

Mr J. V. O’Loughlin, who is touring New Zealand as the representative of several Australian papers, is at present in Wellington. Mr O’Loughlin has been visiting Rotorua and the Hot Lakes district, and is now on .his way to do the sights of the South Island. "

Miss Ivey, cookery instructor at the Wellington Technicttl School, has obtained leave ef absence for some months, and is going on a trip to England. Miss Manning, of the School of Domestic Economy, Christchurch, takes Miss Ivey’s place pro tem. Captain Gilbert Mair, late native lands purchase officer at the Thames, has arrived in Wellington in order to take up a responsible position in the administration of Maori Councils. Captain Mair’s new duties will entail his permanent location in Wellington. The “New Zealand Gazette” of February 19th notifies that His Excellency the Governor of New Zealand has recognised the appointment by the Imperial German Consul-General at Sydney of Mr Eugen Langguth, as Acting-Im-perial German Consul at Auckland during the absence of Mr Carl Seegner, the Consul for Germany.

The Rev. Otho Fitz Gerald has arrived in Christchurch to take up his new duties as curate at St. Michael’s Church. For several years Mr. Fitz Gerald was well known in connection with the Newtown parish, Wellington; since then he has been to Soutn Africa, but was obliged to return on account of his health.

Air Herbert J. Brewer, son of Mr H. C. Brewer, Registrar of the Supreme Court, who has been for some years conveyancing clerk at Messrs Russell and Campbell’s, left on Sunday by the s.s. Ngapuhi to act as managing clerk for Messrs Malone, AlcVeagh and Anderson, solicitors, Stratford, Nuttall, the Melbourne artist who painted a picture of the opening of the Comonwealth Parliament, has just finished a picture of John Batman, which is supposed to illustrate the lines, “This will be the place for a village”—the words written in John’s diary 68 years ago on the day he beheld the site of future Alelbourne.

Captain Boseawen, Hon. A.D.C. to His Excellency the Governor (Lord Ranfurly), informs us that His Excellency, accompanied by r,ord Northland, A.D.C., will leave the Hermitage, Alount Cook, on Alarch sth, for Wellington, where he is due on Alarch Bth, in order to meet His Excellency Admiral Fanshawe. Lord and Lady Ranfurly leave for Auckland early in April to take up their residence here. An old and well-known Canterbury settler, Air. James Archibald Alcllraith, died last Tuesday week at his home, Auchen Flower, Rakaia, as a result of a paralytic stroke. Air. Mellraith managed the Homebush run for many years. He was a brother of Air. Hugh Mcllraft’h, well known in trotting circles, and was born in Ayrshire. The late Air. AlcHraith came of a very old Scottish family. He was 69 years of age. A cable announcing the death of Air Andrew Duncan, solicitor, formerly of Wanganui, has been received. The deceased gentleman was a brother of Air John Duncan, of Wanganui. A daughter of the deceased is the wife of Captain Evelyn Wood, son of General Sir Evelyn Wood, V.C. Air John Dunean was about taking a trip to the Old Country to visit his brother, who has been in failing health for some time. It is probable that the vacancy in the Education Department resulting from the appointment of Air H. B. Kirk, as-sistant-inspector of native schools, as of Biology in Victoria College, will be filled by the promotion of another member of the staff.

The work of demolishing Barrett’s Hotel, one of the first of the Wellington hostelries, was begun last week. A new and up-to-date hotel is to be erected upon the old site. Miss Cooke, masseuse at Hanmer Springs, has resigned, as she is leaving the colony to be married. Aluch regret is felt at the Springs for her departure, as for seven years she has filled the position of masseuse with complete satisfaction.

Constable William H. AlcKinnon, a member of the police force for about 23 years, who has been watchhouse-keeper at the Lambton-quay (Wellington) po-

lice station for five and a-half years, has been appointed a sergeant, and is to be transferred to Auckland. •

Mr C. W. McMurran, a bustling American journalist of 32 years’ standing, who represents MeLure’s Syndicate, consisting of 56 newspapers published in the United States, has eome to Australia to report on matters in general. He is a little man, with a big head, set close down on broad shoulders; a strong, cleanshaven face, and a fine forehead. He is a smart man, and “did” Adelaide in 30 hours. He saw everything and everybody worth knowing, including three Ministers of the Crown, but failed to catch his own countryman, Premier Jenkins, who is too smart to be caught even by an American interviewer.— Melbourne “Table Talk.”

Mr Edwin Hall was a passenger by the Taviuni on February 25th for Fiji, where he catches the R.AI.s. Afoana for Vancouver, enroute for London. He will be absent for six months, and during that period, Mr C. J. Garland, treasurer of the Auckland Provincial District of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, will undertake Air Hall’s duties as secretary of that organisation. Mr W. B. Fordyce, acting in a like capacity in connection with the Provincial Association.

I have excellent authority for stating that Chief Inspector Walter Dinnie, of the Criminal Investigation Department, Scotland Al ard, has been appointed by the Government to succeed Inspector Tunbridge as Commissioner of Police in New Zealand. Inspector Dinnie has been connected with Scotland Yard detective department for 22 years, and has the reputation of being a very able officer, and in every way adapted to his new position (writes our Wellington correspondent).

Promotions and transfers in the postal service of the colony are announced. The chief postmastership at Wanganui has been filled by Air D. Afiller, assistant inspector of post offices, who will be replaced by the promotion of Air Al. P. Curtis, postmaster at Lyttelton. The vacancy in the Lyttelton' office will be filled by Air Wylie, postmaster at Opotiki, whose place will be taken by illr Day, of Auckland. Air Egginton, of the Thames office, will be promoted to the postmastership of Alexandra South.

A pleasant incident marked the severance on February 27th of Aliss Newman’s connection with the Northeote school, where she has been located for the last seven years. Alias Newman, having been appointed mistress of the Devonport school, it was decided by the teachers and pupils to show the esteem in which she was held at Northeote. Yesterday afternoon, therefore, at the close of the school, all assembled, and the head master, Air. A. Taylor, on behaH of the donors, presented Aliss Newman with a handsome gold watch. In doing so he referred to the regret felt at her leaving the Northeote school, but at the same time congratulated Alias Newman upon having received well deserved promotion. who left Auckland last year en route for England, will be interested to hear of their movements. After touring Sydney and New South Wales, the Blue Mountains and Bulli Pass, they left for Melbourne, where they had a very enjoyable look round. Leaving there per a.s. Afric, they safely arrived at Capetown, after weathering a very heavy gale, which raged around the Cape of Good Hope, and where several wrecks occurred. After staying at Capetown for two weeks they obtained permits and proceeded by rail for a three days’ trip to Pretoria, where they stayed with relatives. They subsequently visited Johannesburg and the principal battlefields and blockhouses in the Transvaal and Orange River Colony. They have now settled for a few months at East London prior to their departure to the Old Country early in May.
