TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH.

(By Telegraph.—Special to '‘Graphic.”) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Besides being cast in iier box, Cruciform caught a cold at Wellington, and she is not likely to be on the active list for a few weeks. Nihilist is still moving sore in his work, and it is probable that he will retire to the stud shortly. 1 hall have an opportunity to make my selections for the Canterbury Jockey Club s Summer Meeting on Tuesday; meanwhile, perhaps you will like to learn something of the doings of the candidates for the principal events. The work done at Biccartou yesterday morning (Friday) was un interesting to the verge of monotony; but Thursday’s operations amply repaid a visit to the course. On Thursday, To-morrow (who is coming on fast) was restricted to Steady exercise, but yesterday she spurted six furlongs, the only gallop done during the morning. On Thursday Canute Chiel, tvho is looking the picture of health, easily defeated Narcissus over a mile, and Somerled had no difficulty in beating Windwhistle over seven furlongs. Treadmill and Golden Vein were restricted to easy tasks, but Calibre and Antigone galloped a mile, finishing together. Lady Lillian, who is looking in rare fettie, covered two rounds at half speed. Muscovite sprinted six furlongs, and Welbeck held Scottish Minstrel quite safe over a mile. Lavalette moved sorely in slow work, but his stable com panion, Pallas, got through steady exercise in fine style. Ayrdale spurted five furlongs, and Sir George Clifford’s untried Bill of Portland two-year-old, Quarryman, proved better than Goldenmcre over five furlongs. Bayonet, a two-year-old half-bro-ther by Musketry to Vogengang, created a favourable impression by the decisive manner in which he settled Clandeboy over four furlongs; and Dundas, who has made a rapid recovery fiom his recent ailment, was quite sound after sprinting five furlongs. Another invalid in Tercelet was out, and did steady work; and the exAucklander Ragabrash spurted in company with the two-year-old Brave Heart. The attempt to train Royal Artillery has been abandoned, and the son of Hotchkiss has been returned to his owner’s stud farm. CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Holmes has had an additon to his team — a two-year-old gelding by Euroclydon— Vaultress. Although few foreign horses are engaged at the meeting, the various races have filled well. Some interesting racing should be witnessed. Firebrand went amiss during the week, and will have to be given a rest. The son oT Firecross has very bad feet, which have caused his trainer trouble, and this has caused his retirement. Dundas is again in active commission. He is bowling along freely in tasks allotted him. He will be a competitor at the foithcoming meeting should he continue to go on satisfactorily. Tsaritza put in an appearance on Saturday to fulfil engagements in the forthcoming meeting. She is looking well, and if in her best form should not return w’lhout a winning bracket being placed against her name.

Scottish Minstrel and Sophistic have arrived from Amurl. Roth look well, and will journey South after the Midsummer Meeting to fulfil engagements at Forbury Park, W ingatul. The Pori run filer, Achilles, has not yet put in an appearance, but as he will not run until Saturday he has ample time to ■pare, and will probably arrive in the

course of a day or two. Medallion’s son appears to hold a mortgage on the rich Miaul e Park Plate, for, after King Log's inability to extend him in Wellington, i fail to see what chance anything eise can have. To-morruw has been responsible for a severe preparation, and appears to have come through satisfactorily. Many are loosing forward to this filly making a good struggle, but although 1 expect to see her run a good race, I look forward to Monk s colt having a fairly easy victory. Entries for the Thirteenth Challenge Stakes of the C.J.C. Meeting, 1905, number 81. Messrs Nathan have 14, the Cambria Park 4, bir G. Clifford 5, Mr J. B. Reid 5, Mr T. Morrin 20, Mr G. G. Stead 6, Mr Friedlander 3, lion. G. McLean 3, Mr J. F. Reid 11.

The Musketry—Sequin yearling purchased by D. Brice in Auckland has changed bauds, V. Harris being the new owner. The youngster is quartered at Roden’s, and is stable companion to Calibre and Muscovite.

A Southern paper reminds its readers that Mr J. B. Haggin, the Californian breeder, once made Mr McLean an offer of 500 guineas for St. Clair for one stud season; but the otter was declined. The Hon. George McLean has a fine collection of foals at his Warrington Stud in Otago. Oue of the nicest is a colt by Phoebus Apollo from Enroelydtm's full-sister, Brlsa, and another is a colt by Lord Kosslyu from Mistral. Another sister to Euroclydon, Mist, has a full brother to Vladimir, which strongly resembles the Canterbury Stewards’ Stakes winner. There are two yearlings at the farm, both of which are on the point of being broken in. One is a full-sister to Vladimir, and the other a filly by Lord liosslyn from Misti al. The Midsummer Meeting will be opened on Thursday. The Midsummer Handicap promises to attract a small field, it is unlikely that more than eight horses wlb face the starter. The absentee will probably be Lavalette. All the representatives for this race have arrived with the exception of Ardnaff, General Symons and Clytie, and they have been going satisfactorily in preparations. Judging from the work Lady Lillian and Cannie Chiel ought to fight out the finish.

The following horses should run prominently in other events: —Hornsby Welter Handicap: Somerled and Ayrdale. Billy Stakes: Stepdancer and Barbette. Lyttelton Plate: Gladsome and Delarey. Craven Plate: Pallas and Welbeck. Halswell Welter Handicap: Narcssus and Puawai.

For some time past a large number of workmen have been engaged at the Riceaitou racecourse laying a water service all over the course, and a test of the work was made yesterday with satisfactory results. In the north-western corner of the course in the rear of the plantation a brick building has been erected, in which a seven horse-power Merryweather oil engine and pumping apparatus are fixed. Not far away is a lake which is supplied with water from a race, and the water is pumped from the lake into a huge tank mounted on a high tower. From the tank the water is conveyed in pipes ail round the course. Hydrants are fixed in the pipes at short intervals, and by means of lengths of large hose the whole of the tracks fan be kept well watered with a minimum of trouble. As a result of the work that has been carried out, the racing tracks can be kept iu better order all through the year than has been possible hitherto. The tank, which has a holding capacity of 14,000 gallons, as well as all the pipes, can be pumped full of water in 06 minutes, of which eight minutes are occupied iu filling the pipes. In addition to the new water supply, a large number of other improvements will shortly be put in hand at the course. Chief among these will be the erection of a new grandstand, the present accommodation being insufficient for the requirements of the club. In carrying out the alterations which are proposed, the paddock enclosure will be placed at the north-western end, and the present stand and paddock will he used as the public stand. Other changes will include the shifting of the Inside totalisator, the judge’s box, the removal of the tea-rooms to the plantation, and the laying out of a lake in the paddock. The work will be put in hand immediately, and it.is expected that it will all be completed in time for the November meeting. ® ® ® TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB’S SLUMMER MEETING. NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday.
