Dress Reform
The attempt to introduce reform clothing at Vienna may be regur led as a failure. Only about a dozen ladies ventured to appear in this attire on the Secession Varnishing Day. although the demand for tickets had been enormous in expectation of seeing a great novelty. Those accustomed to the outlines of the Empire. Princess, and tea gowns saw but little new in the reform dress. The principles of no corset and shoulderbands supporting the full weight had been strictly adhered to. but pro ably tin* short trains prevented any striking singularity, as the costume caused only a smile Ire m the er »wd. and obtained no admiration. For evening robes of crepe de (bine and lace the form might perhaps b* rendered graceful, but in a str in ter material it falls into ti e ine itable s ex shape. The general opini n is that il disguises a good figure, and makes a bad one worse. The \ i *n'ui form is not eccentric enough to irrit ite the eye of a Vienna Wachinan. although in Germany the wearers of the new mode have been arrested in several towns.
