Mr and Mrs L Gibbs, Mrs and Miss Waymouth (Christchurch) have gone to Auckland on a visit.

Captain and Mrs Lake have come to reside in Napier, and have been staying at the Masonic Hotel there. Lady Sargood and the Misses Sargood are staying at the Empire Hotel, Wellington. Mr and Mrs A. R. Holdship have been visiting New Plymouth, but have now returned to Wanganui. Mr and Mrs Pat Campbell (“Ham”) are staying at New Brighton for a few weeks.

Mr and Mrs R. Struthers (Christchurch) have taken a house at Sumner for a month.

Mrs. and Miss Ewen (Wellington) are back after a short visit to Wanganui and Pipiriki.

Mrs Robison, with two children, from Eltham, has been visiting New Plymouth, but has no w e returned. Miss Muriel Elworthy (Christchurch) has gone to stay with her sister, Mrs Melville Jameson, Timaru. Mrs. and the Misses Kennedy (Wellington) have gone to Queen Charlotte Sound for January.

Dr. and Mrs. Macarthnr (Wellington) were in Wanganui recently doing the river trip.

Miss E. Murray - Aynsley (Christchurch) has gone with Mrs G. Gould to stay at Moeraki. Miss Steuart, of Wellington, is paying a visit to her sister, Mrs Rollo, of New Plymouth.

Mrs Gordon Fraser, after his short but very pleasant trip to Auckland, returned to New Plymouth last week. Mrs W. S. Bean (Addington) has much improved in health the list few weeks.

Dr. Alice Moorhouse has taken a house in Hereford - street East, Christchurch, and started practice. Mr and Mrs H. F. Wigram IChristchurch) have returned home from a pleasant holiday trip to Auckland.

Mr and Mrs Newton King and family, after their short but pleasant trip to Auckland, have returned to New Plymouth. Mrs Cowx, of Waipawa, has gone to stay in Napier for a few weeks, and has taken a house on the Marine Parade.

The Hon. R. J. Seddon, Mrs and Miss Seddon passed through Christchurch the end of last week on their way to the West Coast. Mr and Mrs H. D. Carter (Christchurch) and family spent a fortnight at Kowai Bush, and returned to town on Tuesday. Dr Home, of New Plymouth, has gone to Auckland to meet his wife and child, who have returned from their year’s trip to England.

Mr A. H. Holmes, with his wife and child, has been visiting Wellington, biut has now returned to New Plymouth.

Mr and Mrs George Seymour, “Meadow-bank,’* Wairau. spent a week in Picton during the holidays, staying at the Federal Hotel.

Mr and Mrs Howard, Blenheim, and Mr and Mrs John Duncan, the Grove, were staying with Mrs Speed, Picton, during the New Tear’s holidays.

Miss G. Holdsworth, wso for the past year has been visiting Wellington, has returned to her home in New Plymouth.

Miss Nina Greensill, of Picton, lately assistant mistress at the Maori Girls’ School, Napier, has been appointed mistress of the new Maori Girls’ School, Auckland. Mr G. Samuels, of Wellington, who has been visiting his uncle, Mr Oliver Samuels, of New Plymouth, has now returned.

Mrs. and the Misses Mason (Wellington) are going to England in a few weeks’ time, and have taken passage by the P. & O. Co.’s India. Mr Lindsay Horricks, who has been spending his Christmas holidays with his parents in New Plymouth, has now returned to Auckland. Mr and Mrs Allen, the former manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Nelson, have been visiting New Plymouth, but have now returned. Mr C. F. Bourne, at one time headmaster of Auckland Grammar School, but now of Christchurch, is in Auckland on a visit.

Mr and Mrs Masfen, of Lake Takapuna, who have been on a visit South, returned to Auckland by the Mararoa on Sunday.

Mrs H. C. Seymour, ’’Tyntesfield,” and the Misses Seymour were in Picton for New Year, staying with Mrs Allen and Mrs Riddell.

Major Chicken, V.D. of the East Coast Battalion, has retired after over thirty years’ service in volunteering.

Mr Shailer 'Weston, of New Plymouth, left last week for Wellington, where he intends to go into partnership with Mr Skerrett.

Major-General Babington and Captain Campbell have gone to Rotorua, visiting the East Coast towns en route.

Mr D. R. Caldwell (Wellington), who has been on a trip to England, returned to New Zealand by the Corinthic.

Mr. Charles Holton Williams, of Wellington, attained his hundredth birthday on January sth, and was the recipient of many congratulations. Mr and Mrs J. Paton, who have been spending their Christmas holidays with their relatives in Auckland, have returned to New Plymouth.

Mrs Menzies (Wellington) has been on a round of visits since her return from Canada, and is at present staying with Mrs Willis, “Woodendean,” Rangitikei.

Mrs Walker, of “Green Hills,” Ellerslie, has gone the Sounds trip with her daughter, Mr and Mrs Arnold Barter, of the Mauku, trusting Mrs Walker will return renewed in health.

The many friends of Mr H. A. Young, who recently left Westport for S ' will be pleased to hear of his appointment as Public Prosecutor at Carolina. Transvaal.

The Rev. Otho Fitz Gerald, who recently returned from Africa, Is temporarily in charge of Wadestown district (Wellington), which is included in St. Paul’s parish. Miss M. Turner, Blenheim, spent a few lays in Christchurch during the Christmas holidays, but has now gone to her people at Ravenscliffe, Queen Charlotte Sound.

Mr. H. F. von Haast, having been called to the English Bur, Is rcturnirg to the colony by the Tongariro nt the end of January, to resume the practice of his profession there.

Mr. \V. Booth, of Carterton (Walrarapa), who recently returned from a prolonged trip to England and the Continent, has been seriously ill since he reached home.

Miss Tendale, lady principal of the Nelson Girls’ High School, has withdrawn her resignation, but leaves very shortly on a holiday trip to England.

Mr. Shailer Weston has left New Plymouth for Wellington, having gone into partnership with the firm of Skerrett and Wylie, of the latter city.

Jaeutenant Lascelles, of the 3rd Dragoon Guards, who has been spending his leave in Napier, is leaving on Friday to rejoin his regiment in South Africa.

Mrs Armstrong and her children have come down from Gisborne, and are spending a few days with Mrs Armstrong’s parents, Captain and Mrs Barclay, Wellington.

Mr J. A. D’Arcy Irvine has been appointed assistant surveyor in the Auckland district, and left Blenheim on Saturday. Many friends in the district congratulate" Mr Irvine on his promotion.

It is understood that Mr Embling, general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, retires, and Mr Michie, of Dunedin, who is appointed to act temporarily, is his prolable successor.

Mrs and 'Miss Riley are back in Wellington, after almost a year’s absence in England. They travelled by the “le” line both going and returning, and spent some time in Sydney on the way home.

The Misses Curtis (3) and Messrs Curtis (2), of Wellington, arrived in Auckland last week. Mr J. Curtis’ marriage with Miss F. George, of Ponsonby, takes, place on Wednesday, January 7th.

Dr. Pomare, of the Health Department. was married at the pretty To Arai Church last week to Miss Woodbine Johnson, the daughter of the late Mr Woodbine Johnson. The Bon. James Carroll gave the bride away.

The Rev A. H. Sedgwick, vicar of Picton, has exchanged pulpits with the vicar of Wakefield, Nelson, for a month’s change. Mrs Lucas anil Mrs Sedgwick will also no doubt enjoy the change, which was effected this week.

Mr and Mrs Holworthy are expected by the Walkanui. Mrs Holworthy, who was formerly Lady Buckley, has hosts of friends ami relations in Wellington who will welcome her return to the colony.

When the Governor visits the Cook Islands in March, it is his intention to formally hand over the administration of the group to the Minister in charge (Hon. C. 11. Mills). Before the annexation the' islands were nominally under the charge of Lord Ranfurly.

The Ven. Henry Govett, 8.A.. Archdeacon of Taranaki, who has rendered lengthy and valuable service to the Anglican Church, has re-signed. As far back as 1848 he was appointed Archdeacon of Taranaki, having therefore occupied the uosltton for 51 years. The Bishop’s Commissary has appointed Rev. Henry Cole to fill the vacancy. The new Archdeacon holds the degree of D.C.L., Trinity College, Toronto. lie has filled positions in the Church In Yorkshire, Quebec and Bermuda. Early last year he came to Auckland for the benefit of his health, and during his stay here made many friends. The very marked improvement in his health decided him on staying on in New Zealand, and ho has decided to resume active church work.

Mr. T. M. Wilford, anil Mra. Wilford (Wellington) will be passengers by the Gothic on her coining trip to Englund. Mr. Wilford is going mainly on account of his health.

Two sons of Mr Heather, of Auckland, one of whom is in the church and another in the army, and both of whom have been in England for some time, have, it is said, inherited a fortune amounting to over £lOO,OOO. The Rev. Mr Eceles, of Waipawa, met with an accident last week. When driving from Hampden he was thrown out and three of his ribs were broken. Miss Nelly Eccles also fell out,"but she fortunately was unhurt.

Mr and Mrs A. J. Bennett. Wool-combe-street. Wellington, celebrated their silver wedding on New Year's Eve, and entertained a iarge number of friends and relatives in honour of the event.

The marriage of Miss May Salmon (Wellington) and Mr Rudman, a master at Wellington College, was celebrated at St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral (Wellington) on January sth. Mr O. Wright, of Hastings, has gone to reside in Dannevirke. Prior to his departure Mr Wright was presented by the Hastings Liedertafel, of which he is a prominent member, with an address and certificate of life membership of the society.

Captain Babot, so well known in nautical circles as marine superintendent for the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company at Wellington, has just retired on a pension, after twentyfive years’ service. He is succeeded by Captain Evans, who will be assisted by Captain Hart.

Mr R. Biss (son of the late Mr S. B. Biss, formerly chief - postmaster at Auckland), who has been connected with shipping circles for some years past, left in the Mararoa on Monday for Sydney', en route for Johannesburg. Prior to his departure he was the recipient of several presentations, and a host of friends in Auckland wish him every success.

Mr W. T>. Webster, of New Plymouth, had the misfortune to break his wrist on Sunday. He was about to mount his pony, having his left foot in the stirrup, when the pony banked, and this unexpected movement overbalanced him. To save himself he put out his left arm, but the force caused his wrist to break. Mr. J. F. Mcßeth (of Wanganui) has recently been presented with a purse of sovereigns and an illuminated address on the occasion of his leaving Wanganui to become chief postmaster at Christchurch. Mr. McBeth had been twenty-five years in Wanganui as a chief postmaster. Mr R. K. Simpson, of Rangitikei,

who recently returned from a trip to the Old Country, had the pleasure of meeting General Heetor Macdonald at Ceylon. The popular Highlander told Mr Simpson that he looked back with great pleasure to his trip'to New Zealand some fifteen months ago. Miss Olive Tilly, of Auckland, has gone for a trip to the Old Country. She intends to enter on a course'of instruction at the South Kensington School, to perfect herself in the art of wood-carving. being possessed of considerable skill in that branch of industry. Dr. Chas. Rowley, of Otahuhu, has returned to his home after a trip to England. He visited the principal hospitals in London, Edinburgh, and other large cities; and whilst at Home took the opportunity of' extending his studies, and of inquirihir into the latest improvements in medical and surgical work. Dr. Rowley obtained an additional diploma- from the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh. Mr J. J. O'Brien, one of the managing directors of the LeylandO'Brien Timber Company, who returned from a tour round the world by the mail steamer Sierra the other day, was met at luncheon by the employees of the company, in the company's board room yesterday, and accorded a most hearty welcome. Several of the employees expressed their pleasure at again meeting Mr O’Brien, and that gentleman, in reply, said that it afforded him great pleasure to be again with them. The proceedings closed with hearty cheers for Mr and Mrs O'Brien and Mr and Mrs Leyland.

Captain George A. Lobb, who recently resigned front the Union Steamship Company, arrived in Auckland from Wellington by the Mararoa. Captain Lobb has been 18 years in the service of the company, as second mate, mate, and master, and is now going into the service of the Westport Coal Company. Captain Lobb leaves for England by way of America. by the mail steamer Sierra, on the 23rd inst.. to superintend the construction of the large steamer Canopus, which is to be built by Messrs Swan and Hunter, of Newcastle-on-Tyne. for the Westport Coal Company’s New Zealand trade, and will come out in command of the steamer.

A highly successful performance of the “Yeoman of the Guard” was given by the Rangitikei Operatic Society at Bulls on New Year's night. The principal parts were taken by Miss Kilgour (Elsie Maynard), Miss N. Parsons (Phoebe Meryll), Miss D. Stevens (Dame Carruthers), Mr. N. Holdaway (Colonel Fairfax), Mr. R. A. Wilson (Jack Point), and Mr. A. McKenzie, as the gaoler. Mr. J. G. Wilson, who conducted, was cheered at the conclusion of the performance.
