Dear Bee, December 12. A successful concert took place at the Marist Brothers’ School on the 4th inst. The entertainment was held in one of the large schoolrooms, and afforded the audience much enjoyment. Ihe programme included songs by Messrs Allen, Higgins, Mackintosh. O'Donoghue and Downey: recitations by Masters A. Downing and J. Robinson; and pianoforte solos by Misses J. Barry and M. O Donoghue, which were vigorously encored. The concert was followed by an amusing comedietta in one act, “The Doctor's Assistant,” which was brightly played by Masters Payne, Verschaffelt, Downing and McCormack. Another short drama, “Honesty the Best Policy.” was given at the, end of the first half of the programme. Archbishop Redwood was present on the occasion, and at tha close of the concert both he and Father Goggan complimented the performers on the success of their efforts.

The breaking up of the Hukarere Maori Girls' School took placet

on Thursffny. when, at the invitation of Miss Williams, a large number of visitors assembled ut the school. The prizes were distributed by the Bishop and Archdeacon 9. Williams gave an address to the children in Maori, after which the latter rendered several part songs admirably, much to the enjoyment of the audience. Amongst those present were Lady Russell, in a handsome blaek costume, bonnet to match; Mrs Antill looked well in white muslin and laee, large black hat; Mrs George White wore black silk and a becoming ehiffon boa; Mrs C. MeLean had a - grey blouse, a black skirt, and a hat to match; Mrs Lascelles also wore grey; Mrs Hamlin had a heliotrope dress and a black hat; the Misses Williams

were in black; Mrs Kinross White bad a well fitting green eoat and skirt with brocade revers, large black hat trimmed with ehiffon; Miss Sidey had a dainty grey and red muslin costume; Miss N. Cotterill wore black, chiffon boa, black chiffon hat; Mrs P. S. McLean was also in black, as was Mrs Logan; the latter wore a dainty -white lace collar and a hat of black and green; Mrs Innes, grey and white muslin with a black hat; Mrs Bennett was in a becoming black costume; Miss Wood wore a white blouse and a -black skirt; Mrs Saxby was in a brown dress trimmed with guipure lace, black hat with heliotrope flowers; Mrs Bowen looked well in cream; Miss Hunter had a black dress; Miss Connor wore a dainty cream costume with a black collar and a blaek hat; Mrs Rutherford was in blaek and white; Mrs Hansard wore a blue gown trimmed with guipure lace.

An entertainment was given at Hastings on Monday evening as a welcome to Captain A. H. Russell, who has recently returned from England. It consisted of a social and smoke concert. Numerous toasts were given and responded to, and the chair was taken by Lieut. Canning. Enjoyable music was provided by, Messrs Jones, Jull, Hyde, Coward, Ryan. Whitely and Vickers. Lieut. Canning, who has taken Captain Russell's place during the latter’s absence, was presented by Sergt.-Major Jones on behalf of the Hawke’s Bay Rifles with a case of pipes as a token of their- appreciation of his services during the past year.
