Dear Bee, November 2L The spring show of the Napier Horticultural and Floral Society was held cn the 19th and 2Oth imsts. in the Foresters’ Hall, and Hie weather, being most favourable, it was a great success. The display of fruit, vegetables, flowers and floral bouquets and devices sent for competition was most praiseworthy. Miss F. Sutton was one of the most successful prizewinners amongst the ladies. She won the first prize for the best collection of sweet peas, for twelve sweet peas, for dinner-table decoration, and second prize for three vases of flowers, arranged for effect, and for six sweet peas. Mrs. T. W. Balfour showed the best collection of cut flowers, and also took first prize for bulbous plants, antirrhinums, gladioli, carnations and pansies, as well as gaining second prize in other classes. Some other successful competitors were: Mesdames ToswilL C. H. Cato, W. C. Yates, J. Thomson, Misses Niven, Newman, Daisy Rutherford, Bishop, Kennedy, M. Davidson, and Messrs. \V. F. J. Anderson, \V. C. Yates, C. H. Edwards, D. Canning, A. K. Cotterill, F. W. Williams, A. Waterhouse, J. B. Brathwaite, etc. Mr. J. D. McFarlane, of Takapau, was the judge. Some pretty dresses were worn at the show, more especially on Wednesday, the opening day, when the hall was crowded. Airs. C. McLean looked well in a black dress, trimmed with maize-coloured silk, and a black and yellow toque: Mrs. Ronald had a well-fitting brown cloth coat and skirt, and a cream straw hat; Mrs. De Lisle wore a dainty black silk blouse, a black skirt, and a hat to match; Mrs. Tabuteau was in blue, and she wore a white chiffon boa and a white hat trimmed with black velvet and pink roses; Mrs. Bowen had a black

coat and skirt, relieved with pale blue, and a black chiffon toque, trisa-m<-cl with yellow flowers; Mrs. Bree had a very pretty dress of grey figured muslin, a white chiffon boa, and a black and white hat; Mrs. Edgar had a pale blue muslin blouse, triurmed with black and white spotted net, a fawn skirt and a black hat; Mrs. Sutton wore black, a handsome cape of black chiffon and jet, and a black bonnet to match; Mrs. East had a white blouse, a black cloth skirt, and a large black hat; Mrs. F. Fulton was in dark blue, with a guipure lace sailor collar, and a becoming black straw hat, trimmed with pink roses; Miss Large had a grey dress, trimmed with white silk, and she also wore a black hat, relieved with pink roses; Miss F. Sutton wore a rose pink muslin costume, with white embroidery on the bodice, black straw hat. trimmed with chiffon; Miss Macfarlane wore a grey and white muslin blouse, a grey skirt and a black hat; Miss Rutherford had a bright blue drill costume, trimmed with guipure lace, sailor hat; Miss White had a black coat and skirt, and a hat to match; Miss McVay was in black and pink. The first of the Railway Variety Entertainers’ popular concerts took place on the 19th inst. in the Theatre Royal, and was extremely well attendeii. i’he principal soloists were: Miss Adela King, and Messrs. C. Ellis, P. Gruchy and Longworth; the latter was particularly happy in his fine reiuiering of the song, "Down in the Deep. ” Miss Adele King sang "The Lost Chord,” and responded to a hear lily expressed desire for an encore. She also gave “Daddy” with charming expression. Mr. McKennie charmed the audience by his comet sola; and the mandolin quartette by Misses Gilding, Hunt, Rigger and Mr. Sehieming, was an equally finished performance. A farce, “Un Coup de Razor,” the parts in which were taken by- Miss Young, and Messrs. T. L. Coward, C. P. Lindergreen, D. McGowan and G. Shaw, brought a most enjovable evening successfully to a close. MARJORIE.
