AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, -November 4. Yet another pleasant recollection was added to the annals of the AUCKLAND BOWLING CLUB on Saturday last, when the club reopened their green for play, and in response to the hospitable invitation of Mr A. M. Myers, president, and his mother (Mrs Louis Myers) nearly a thousand guests assembled. Beautiful weather favoured the function, which possessed all the attractions of a garden party. The picturesque grounds were delightfully decorated with streamers of bunting and flowers. The emerald swards were enclosed with festoons and garlands of greenery, the bright shade of macrocarpus and the deeper shade of the cabbage tree predominating, while the ever-fresh arum lilies set off the whole to the best advantage. Along the sloping bank between the greens a pretty effect was gained by the word “Welcome,” artistically arranged in variegated flowers. Mr and Mrs Myers received the guests at the entrance to the pavilion, and were most assiduous in attention to their comfort, and may be congratulated on the success of their efforts to render the afternoon a pleasant one. THE FIRST GARDEN PARTY OF THIS SEASON

was given by Mrs Oberlin Brown, at her pretty residence, “Te Rawhiti,' Belle Vue-road, Mt. Eden, last Tuesday afternoon. A .garden party in spring is rather a risky entertainment, as the weather 'has been so unsettled and wet, but. you Know "‘nothing venture nothing have,” and fortunately, though the morning was cloudy, it cleared up brightly in the afternoon. This function was given as a farewell to dur hostess’ daughter, Miss Kitty, who is to be married next Thursday to Mr. Batty, and who will reside at Pokeno. Mrs Oberlin Brown and her daughters received their guests* in the large reception room, which was prettily decorated with yellow daisies, lilac and spring bulbs. The band of musicians was stationed beneath a tree, ami its excellent music added to the brightness of the proceedings. Many of the guests wandered at will round the garden, watched the croquet and ping-pong players, or admired the beautiful and costly presents displayed in a room in the house. POLO. There was a very large muster of polo members last Saturday at. Hunter and Nolan’s paddock, Ellerslie. Amongst them were Messrs Tonks, Crowther, Meredith, Lloyd, Pittar, Burns, Jackson, Morrin, Hume, Brodie, Cotter, Hanna and Dr. Maitland. The Remuera Club have shown great taste by choosing Royal blue for their colours a true, good colour, mnd a charming contrast it made to the scarlet, of the Auckland team. On Saturday some of the players still wore white; what a glorious combination they helped to make—red, white and blue. With those colours, who would dare to beat them? As the sun shone down upon the playing teams, with these colours racing to and fro against a background of dark

pine trees, what more picturesque or beautiful scene could anyone wish for ? One of the members drove out in great style, handling his polo team in tandem. Unfortunately his leader was a little inquisitive, turning very often to see how the Jehu was manipulating the ribbons, which at times made it a trifle awkward for the occupants of the vehicle. During the afternoon Mr Cotter was laid out for a short time through a knock from the polo ball. Afternoon teal was served beneath the trees by some of the ladies in picnic fashion, which was much appreciated. Amongst those present were: Mr and Mrs Wynyard, Mrs H. Tonks, Misses Smith (2), Colter, Jackson, Kerr-Taylor (3), Mrs Hanna, Mrs (Dr.) Maitland, Misses Buckland (2), Mrs Bloomfield, Messrs Ware, Lewis, Kinloch, etc.
