His Excellency the Governor, Lady Banfurly, and Lady Constance Knox, attended by Captain Alexander, have left by the Warrimoo on a visit to Australia. ' After a short stay with Sir A. Havelock, Governor of Tasmania, they will proceed to Melbourne end Sydney, stopping- at Mildura, where Lord Banfurly has property. After six weeks’ absence the party will return to New Zealand early in December, and take up their residence at Claremont, near Timaru, till the. summer is over. There is a rumour that His Excellency’s trip to Australia has some connection with the still vacant Governor-Generalship of the Commonwealth.

Lady Constance Knox has been paying- a short visit to the Hon. F. and Mrs Arkwright, at “Overton,” Marton.

Mr. and Mrs. Showman, of Victoria, are visiting Rotorua at present. The Rev. W. Evans has returned to Wellington after a trip to Sydney. Miss Kettle, of Napier, has gone for a visit to Dunedin. Mrs Denniston, Avonside, Christchurch, has gone up to Wellington. Mrs H. C. Butler (Wellington) is visiting relatives in Wanganui.

Miss Roskruge, of Auckland, is paying Rotorua a visit.

Mrs Cleghorn (Wanganui) is spending a few days in Wellington. Miss Logan (Dunedin) is the guest of her aunt, Lady Stout, Wellington. Mrs. Cashel, of Auckland, is staying in Rotorua at present. Mrs. end Miss Wynyard returned home to Auckland on Monday after a trip to England.

Mr H. A. Cornford has been appointed Crown Prosecutor in Napier, ▼ice the late Mr A. J. Cotterill. Miss I. Goldwater has returned to her home in New Plymouth after visiting her relations in Auckland.

Mr John Connal (Christchurch) is in Auckland for about a fortnight’s stay.

Mrs Bright (Blenheim) is spending a week or two in Wellington on her way to Wanganui. Mr J. Clarke, Alpine guide for the Tourist Department, left Christchurch last week for Mt. Cook hermitage.

Mrs Paul Hunter, of Waipukurau, has been staying at the Masonic Hotel, Napier.

Mrs Von Dadelzen, of the Napier Athenaeum, is leaving to stay with friends in Gisborne. —-

Mrs and the Misses Fitzherbert (Wellington) are visiting Christchurch at present.

The Hon. Mr. McGowan purposes spending about ten days visiting his electorate.

Mrs A. Deane has come to Napier from the country, and has been staying at the Masonic Hotel there. Miss Clarke, of Petone, has been paying a visit to Mrs Davidson, of the Bluff Hill, Napier. Miss Tabart (Christchurch) has gone out to “Otahuna,” Tai Tapu, on a visit to Mrs Heaton Rhodes.

Mr and Mrs T. H. Lowry, of “Okawa,” Hawke’s Bay, have returned from a trip to England. ( Mrs Fenwick (Christchurch) has gone on a visit to her daughter, Mrs de V Teschemaker, in Marlborough.

Mr. and Mrs. and Miss Seymour Thorne George are expected home in Auckland on Sunday next.

Dr. and Mrs. H. Swales, of Auckland, have come to Rotorua to reside, and Dr. Swales has commenced practice.

Mrs Edgar Dell and her sister, Miss I. Ellis, have returned to New Plymouth after their pleasant trip to Auckland.

Mr Gray, secretary of the General Post Office, -was on a short visit to New Plymouth last week, but has now returned.

Miss E. Wilson, “The Grove,” Sydenham, has gone up to Hamner to join her mother and sister already visiting there.

Bishop Julius and Mrs Julius passed through Wellington recently on

their way home to Christchurch, after a visit to Australia.

The appointment of inspecting officer of the defence force cadets for the colony has been accepted by Mr J. G. Hughes, of Napier. Mr A. Mounteney Jephson, who has been staying at Government House for some time, has left on a visit to Hawke’s Bay.

Count de Courte, French Consul in New Zealand, has returned by the s.s. Manapouri from a trip through the South Sea Islands. Mrs and the Misses -Shaw, who, for some years, have resided at Taradale, have taken up their residence in Coote road, Napier. Mr and Mrs John Ross and family are returning to the colony by the Gothic. It is more than probable Mr and Mrs Ross will take up their residence in Auckland.

Mrs George Merton (of the Cathedral School) was out last week at the College sports, after her very serious illness of nearly six months. She looked quite convalescent.

Mr. J. M. Brigham has returned home to Auckland, and looks much the better for his trip to England in connection with the Auckland Naval Station.

The new pavilion at the Heretaunga Tennis Club Grounds, Hastings, formally opened on Wednesday by Mr C. A. Fitz-Roy, vicepresident of the Club. Mr and Mrs Adden-Brooke and family, late from the Old Country, have come to take up their abode in New Plymouth, and have taken the late Captain Capel’s house.

Mr James Coates (Wellington) is rapidly recovering from his somewhat serious illness, and will probably take a holiday trip to Australia •to recruit.

Amongst recent arrivals at Hanmer Hot Springs are Mr and Mrs Murphy (Lyttelton), Mi- and Mrs B. Wallace and child, and Mr J. Moodie (Christchurch). Mrs H. Wells left Christchurch last Friday en route to England, taking her daughter, Miss Cris Wells, the promising young musician, to place her at school in Leipsic to continue her studies.

Dr. W. A. Conlon, of Reefton, has been appointed medical superintendent of Reefton Hospital, in place of Dr. Whitton, who has resigned, after filling the position for over sixteen years.

Mr John Lomas, Inspector of Factories (Christchurch), has been confined to his home suffering from influenza for the past week. Mr Isherwood is at present in charge of the bureau.

Among the team of cricketers Lord Hawke is bringing out to New Zealand is Mr Peter Randall Johnson, son of the Hon. G. Randall Johnson, formerly a well known resident of Wellington, and a member of the Legislative Council.

Miss Oswin, M.A., who is leaving the Hokitika School to take up a position on the staff of the Featherston School, Wairarapa, was the recipient of several presentations and addresses from the staff and scholars at Hokitika.

The Rev. Mr Ward, who is leaving Dunedin on "a lecturing tour under his engagement with Mr R. S. Smythe, was presented with a gold watch, chain and pencil, and also with a substantial cheque, the proceeds of his recent lecture.

Amongst the visitors to Wellington last week were Mr Harvey, travelling representative of “Tattersall’e,” Hobart; Mr E. C. Cox, of the firm of Birt, Cox and Co., Sydney, also of the New Zealand and South African Shipping Company; Captain and Mrs Grainger, Auckland; and Mrs J. C. Brown, Dunedin. They are all staying at the Empire Hotel. General regret will be felt at the death at sea—near Aden—of Mr. Alfred Henry Morrisby, of Parnell, Auckland, who was returning to Auckland after a visit extending over two years to the Old Country. Mr. Morisby was generally liked by all who were brought into contact with

him, and will be much missed in Parnell, where be was extremely Charitable in a very unostentatious manner.

Inspector J. C. Miller, of the Stock Department, who has been stationed at Oamaru for nearly ten years, has received notice of his transference to Christchurch. Inspector Ironsides, from the South, takes Inspector Miller’s place. Mr and Mrs Miller have made a host, of friends in Oamaru, and they leave the town for Christchurch with the best of wishes for their future. The “North Otago Times” mentions that under Inspector Miller’s supervision the rabbit pest in the district has been considerably diminished, and this has been accomplished without any undue harassment of the landowners.

Mr J. E.'T’age, who is vacating the position of town clerk, Wellington, in order to become city treasurer, was recently entertained by the official staff of the corporation and presented with a handsome enlarged and framed photograph of the municipal staff. Mr Wiltshire, city engineer, who has been obliged to retire through ill-health, also received a presentation, consisting of gold sleeve links, a gold-mounted Malacca cane, a case of pipes, and a pair of field-glasses. Songs were contributed by Messrs Rounthwaite, Geary, Pedder, Smith, Baggett, Palmer, etc., and other items by Messrs Doyle, Godber, Honour, Taylor, Collins and Waters. The new town clerk, Mr Palmer, acted as chairman, and a very bright and enjoyable evening was spent.
