LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP HOCKEY TOURNAMENT AT WELLINGTON. (Continued from last week.) The second match of the first round, when Craven School (Palmerston North) played the “Raukura” (Hutt, Wellington), resulted in a win for the former by five’goals to nil, after a fast game. The Raukuras played a plucky up-hill game, and several times came near scoring, but the superior combination of the Craven School proved too much for them. Goals were scored for the winners by Misses A. Dalrymple (2), Abraham, Fitzgerald and Fitzherbert. Miss Moore (“Raukura”) played a thoroughly good game at fullback, and repeatedly saved. Misses D. Fitzgerald and Foster also played well. Mr. R. Beere acted as referee. The third match, lyiwi (Wellington) v. Wanganui Girls’ College, was played in bitterly cold weather and a slight drizzle*. The game was of an exceptionally fast up and down character, and was very even throughout, the play being almost always on the wings. The game resulted in a draw, each side scoring- one goal, and on the extra tspell of ten minutes being played Wanganui took their opponents’ backs by surprise, and scored an extra goal within two minutes of the start, thus gaining the victory. Miss .Bulkley scored for the losers, and Misses Strack and Liffiton for Wanganui. The match was particularly interesting to watch, and caused great excitement, though had the Kiwis, taken all their, chances at goal they.would have won by .3 to 1. For the Kiwis Miss L. James played a dashing game as outside right wing forward, her fast runs and centres being- very useful. Miss A. Rawson did service at full-back. For the Wanganui team Misses Gordon and Graham (backs) played very well, though the latter spoilt her play by hitting out unnecessarily. Mr. E. Reid acted as referee. On Monday morning the second round opened with a match. Aorangi (Wellington) v. Wanganui Girls’ College, the former winning by two goals to one, after a well-contested game. Miss V. Willis (centre forward), who scored for the Aorangis, played a fast hard game throughout, and Miss Ward, on the wing, played unselfishly, her dribbling and passing being excellent. . Miss Simpson, as usual, was a tower of strength to her side. The Wanganui girls did. not show such good form as in their previous match against the Kiwis, but they put on a spurt, and scored a goal just, as time was called. Miss Strack putting the ball through. Tn the afternoon a good match was played between Craven School (Pal- • merston) and Wakatu (Nelson), the

Contrary to expectations, the Wellington ladies-won by two goals to nil after a h«tlyeontested match. Miss Rawson, who scored the second goal for Wellington, played a rattling game? as also did Miss Heath (left wing) rand Miss Moore (left half), while Mfcses Simpson and A. Rawson distingivished themselves in defence, and Misses Bulkley, Edwin and Ward in attacking. For the visitors Misses Legett, Roberts. Abraham and Johnson were the pick of a good tesm. Two goals were disallowed, one for Wellington (off-side), and the other (for the visitors) being struck after the whistle had been sounded for “sticks,” the cheering- and barracking of the spectators making the whistle inaudible to some of the players. Gold pins, in the form, of crossed hockey sticks atnd a ball, were presented to the players of the winning team by Mr. Rawson. The Wellington Hockey Association generously lent the - services of theii- best referee (Mr. H.ißridge)iforthis representative matt-li, thotagh two important men’s matches vtereplayed on the same afternoon.
