NEW PLYMOUTH.
Dear Bee, — August 22. The opening season of THE GONDOLIERS by the Amateur Opera Club was held in the Theatre Royal last Wednesday evening to a crowded house, and the dressing and staging was particulaly pretty. Miss Pawson (Wanganui), as “Tessa,” acted her part very naturally, and with confidence her singing also being a great success. Miss Alice Teed was spontaneously applauded in the carrying out of her part as “Gianetta,” her acting being full of vivacity and crispness. “The Duchess,” taken by Miss Hester Burr (Palmerston) both sang and acted well, especially in her duet with the Duke. Miss Kate Connell, of Hawera, as “Casilda,” was in splendid voice, and in the duet, “There Was a Time,” her voice was heard to perfection. Mr. W. Perry, as “Gu-iseppi,” accomplished his part, very successfully, and Mi'. J. H. Rowe (Inglewood). as “Marco,” scored a great success- in his singing, and his “Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes” was one of the most enjoyable numbers of the piece. “The Duke” (Mr. Ryan), acted and sang his part as to the manner born. Mr. Ernest Clark (“Luiz”) acted with considerable ability. Mr. Ducker, as “Grand Inquisitor.” both looked and acted his part to perfection. The orchestra, led by Mr. A. L. Cooke, and conducted by Mr. H. Cottier, greatly added to the success
of the piece. Among the audience I noticed — Mrs. F.
