The Bates Memorial Windows.

The memorial windows to the late Rev. Canon Bates, viear of the Holy Trinity Church, Devonport, Auckland, who died five years ago. were unveiled on the Sunday before last by the Rev Canon Nelson and the Rev. T. Eykyn viear. The windows were purchased, after designs had been called for, over three years ago, but a division occurred among members of the congregation soon after its arrival in Auckland, and the movement to erect the windows we "uspended. lhe windows lay in the Customs bond for nearly three years, but in- Slay last the congregation again became unit ed, and the amount necessary to pay the djuty arid complete the erection. X5O, was then subscribed, and the windows were accordingly placed in the church, under the supervision of Messrs. Edward Hartley, J. L. Holland and John Harvey. The subjects represented in the memorial are, in the eastern window, “Christ, the King ot Glory, “Christ, the Light of the World," and “Christ, the Good Shep herd.” The north side light repre sents "Christ in the Vineyard.” "1 am the True Vine,” and the south light, "Christ in the Cornfield,” “1 am the Bread, of Life.” Along the lower border of the three central lights runs the following inscription: “To the glory of God, and in memory of Canon Joseph Bates, vicar, 1872-1897.
