THE WORLD OF FASHION.

(By

MARGUERITE.

Spring’ fashions for 1902 (the Coronation year), are not only effective hut they are generally becoming, although rich and costly in many cases. '! he prevailing colours are pleasing; soft shades of forget-rrie-not blue, that which has somewhat of a pinkish tinge, delicate lichen green, pale mauve, old pink, chinchilla grey, fawn and nutmeg being tue favourite tints, whilst the brilliant Coro-

nation red, and shamrock green are used by way of trimming on more sober colours. Russian blouses and short coatees are immensely popular for outdooi wear, and for dressy occasions the bonis XV. coat with its elaborate vest and ruffles, is made in the richest silks, satins and velvets, as well as in the same material as the skirt. Huttons play an important part in

the ornamentation of new gowns, ihose of tiny proportions being used in dozens on some, whilst the larger and more elaborate ones serve as fastenings and trimmings for boleros and blouses. Lace embroidered with gold, and ofttimes studded with jewels, is used in combination with soft silks and satins in the construction of the still popular blouse, or slip, and lace of

every make is used in profusion as

a trimming. In materials there is a decided tenlency to favour those of crepe-like ■fleets, either in all-wool, or silk and wool combinations; friezes are also still worn, but are of finer texture than those of the winter. A fine sat-in-face cloth is also much used, as it lends itself so well to the skirts that are composed of flounces.
