Monument to the Late Professor Schmitt.

The many friends and admirers of the late Prof. Karl Schmitt will be pleased to learn that, through the efforts of several close personal friends desirous of testifying to the respect and esteem in which they held the late Conductor of the Choral Society, there has recently been erected over his last resting-place in Clevedon, Wairoa South, a handsome memorial stone of Aberdeen granite. This is mounted on a pedestal of black marble, which is again mounted on a deep plinth of white marble, the whole being surrounded by an iron railing on stone foundation, and lettered as follows: “In loving memory of Karl Gustave David Schmitt. K.C.C.L.. son of Dr. Aloys Schmitt, of Frankfurt on Main. Died at Cleve-

don. March 22nd. 1900, aged 66 years For 19 years Conductor of the Auckland ( horal Society and first Profes sor of Music in the Auckland University- College.”

The late Prof. Karl Schmitt occupied a most distinguished position in music, and held many orders and decorations from Continental authorities. As a conductor he stood in the first rank, his qualities as a teacher, composer and a leader in his profession marked him as a man of unusual gifts.

The stone was erected by Harris monumental mason, Auckland.
