Dear Bee, May 20. A small, but most successful and enjoyable “At Home” was given on Monday afternoon by His Excellency the Governor (Lord Ranfurly) and the Countess of Ranfurly, who, by their gracious hospitality, have made themselves so popular from one end of the colony to the other. Lord and Countess Ranfurly, ably assisted by Ladies Constance and Eileen Knox, received their guests at the entrance of the drawing-room, which was decorated with nikatt palms and lit up with a softened light from the many incandescent gas lamps, subdued by coming through the pale pink coloured shades, which had a charming effect, as it fell upon the guests. Refreshments of a recherche character, flanked with the choicest of wine, were served in the dining-room. Lady Ranfurly, rich violet velvet en traine, cream Spanish laee round neck, which was draped artistically

on corsage, and finishing' in lover’s knot on skirt, fastened at neck with diamond ornaments, the. Medici collar and skirt was outlined with sable. Lady Constance Knox, crushed strawberry cloth skirt, with silk bodice finished with fawn lace; Lady Eileen Knox, black accordeon-pleated silk frock relieved with white lace.

On Tuesday evening last week the “Atom Club” gave a most enjoyable “at home” in Mrs. Sowcrby’s Hall, to celebrate the third birthday of the “Atom Quarterly,” and the anniversary of the arrival in the colony of its energetic lady editor. Miss Dora Moor. Musical items were given by Madame Daw, the Misses Tilly, Taylor. Phillips, Jessie Brown and Ethel Mahon, and recitations by Mr. F. E. Ranme, Misses Maude Pencocke and Frances Fraser. Ping-pong tables

had been provided, and were in great demand amongst the visitors. During the evening Mr. F. E. Baume made an appropriate speech, and proposed the toast, “Long life and prosperity to the 'Atom Quarterly’ and its editor,” which was drunk in Atom champagne and heartily responded to by general acclamation. The supper table, which was laden with delicious cakes and sandwiches, looked very

pretty with its decorations of yellow and white daisies and silk drapings of purple and yellow (the dub's colours). After .supper the happy party finished up with dancing. Mdlle. Dolores (Trebelli), who gave her first concert last Friday evening at the Choral Hall, received a most warm-hearted welcome. Mademoiselle

sings sweeter than ever, and she simply charmed the hearts of the audience. She was attired in a lemoncoloured figured satin gown, showing a panel of oyster white satin, embroidered with grey chenille applique, the bodice was draped with beautiful cream laee, and had a wreath of yellow flowers on corsage. SALE OF WORK AND MATINEE MUSICALE.

The sale of work and concert given by Miss Rimmer and fri -nds in aid of Dr. Barnardo’s Homes in the Y.M.C.A. Rooms last Friday afternoon were a great success. The stalls, which were set out in the social hall, were laden with a great variety of articles worked by willing hands, and the stallholders did remarkably good work. The Countess of Ranfurly, accompanied by Captain Dudley Alexander and Captain Hugh Boseawen, arrived shortly after the sale opened, and was shown round the stalls, where she, made a number of purchases. Her Ladyship was also present at the concert given in the lecture room at 4 o’clock, where a very good programme was gone through.
