The Countess of Rnnfurly gave a children’s party at Government House on Friday, about thirty being present. The little ones enjoyed themselves very well. Her Excellency will give a tea to the inmates of the Costley Home on Wednesday, 21st Inst. His Excellency the Governor visits the Chelsea Sugar Works on Friday next, and drives out to Howick on the following day.

Dr and .Mrs Jarvis left Napier for England on Monday, May 5.

Mrs Donnelly, of Hawke’s Bay, is staying in Palmerston. Mrs Wells, of Christchurch, Is visiting Napier.

Dr. Moore has returned from a wellearrted holiday in Wellington. Miss Seale has returned to Napier from a visit to Christchurch.

Mrs Chas. Wallnutt, of Ponsonby, Auckland, has gone to Hamilton on a six months’ visit.

Mr. and Mrs. H. Buchanan (Little River) left for a trip to England yesterday* May 6. Miss Bullen (England) is staying with her cousin, Mrs. Gilbert Anderson, Riccarton.

Mrs. Worsp (Auckland) is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Jackson, Cranmer Square, Christchurch. Miss Jean Anderson (Blenheim) is visiting Mrs. Wilson, “The Grove,” Sydenham. Mr and Mrs Archer (Christchurch) passed through Wellington lately, on their way to England. The Misses Williams (Wellington) are staying with Mrs. A. Boyle, Riccarton.

Mrs H. Kinder, who has been on a visit to her relatives in Sydney, returned to Auckland last Sunday by the Zealandia.

Mr Parsons, who has been visiting his daughter, Mrs Paton, New Pfymouth, has returned to his home in Ponsonby.

Mr Polson, second master of the Napier High School, has been appointed principal in place of the late Mr Wood.

Mrs. G. and Miss Denniston (Dunedin) are staying with Judge and Mrs. Denniston, Linwood House, Christchurch.

The Misses Dickie (North Island) are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Wallace at Mrs. Tribe’s, HerefordStreet, Christchurch. The Misses Ada and Bertha Julius have gone for the holidays into the country, spending the first week with Mrs. Duncan Cameron, Methven. Mdlle. Antonia Dolores was the guest of Mr and Mrs Prouse, at “Cricklewood,” Aurora Terrace, Wellington, during her stay in the Empire City.

Mr and Mrs J. J. Niblock, of Penrose, Auckland, left the colony by the s.s. Athenic on Bth inst. for a tour through Europe and America. They expect to be away about fifteen months.

Mr and Mrs Fulton and Miss E. Stafford have returned to Wellington, after a short trip to Rotorua. Miss F. Stafford is paying a visit to friends near Castlepoint. The Atom Club gave an Atomical Evening to celebrate the birthday of the “Atom Quarterly” in Sowerby’s Hall, Symonds-street, Auckland, on Tuesday, Mgy 13th. Miss O. Ring and Miss M. Govett, of Wellington and Wanganui Colleges, respectively, have come home to spend their term holidays in New Plymouth.

Mr and Mrs John Hill, the former of the Customs, Christchurch, have been visiting Mr and Mrs J. Hoskins, Mrs Hill’s parents, of New Plymouth, but have now returned.

The annual dance under the auspices of St. George’s Rowing Club takes place in the Choral Hall on Thursday, 22nd May, and promises to be, as it invariably is, a great success.

men, is staying iu Napier to preside at the session which is being held there this year. Mrs George Graham and Miss R. Graham, of Brighton, England, who have been on a visit to Auckland, left last Wednesday by the Manaponri for the Ronth Bea Islands. After touring the Islands they will leave for England, via Sydney. Miss Agnes ftobertson, niece of the Rev. T. F. Robertson, of Ponsonby, Auckland, who was for some two years on a visit to her uncle, was recently married to Mr William Alexander. of Glasgow, Scotland. Mr aud Mrs Alexander spent their honeymoon on the Continent.

Mdlle. Dolores, Mdlle. Vadaur, Mr. Vert and Mr. Newall left for Ashburton on Friday, giving a concert there on Saturday, and one >n Oaniarn on Monday. Last night they passed through Christchurch on their way to Wellington.

Amongst visitors to the Albert Hotel this week were: Mr. C. W. Caldwell; Fiji: Captaifi and Mrs. Kennedy, Waiheke; Mr. D. J. McGowan, Mr. A. G. S->hirley, Dr. Arch. Maxwell, Mrs. A. A. Wright, Mr. and Bars. Singleton, Mr. and Mrs. Koster, all of Sydney. Mrs and Miss Kemp (England) have gone over to Nelson for a visit. Mrs Kemp is returning to the Old Country by the China at the end of the month, but Miss Kemp is remaining some time longer with her aunt, Mrs Pharazyn.

The Misses Maud and Ellie Williams (Wellington) are back after a stay of some months in the South Island, principally in the Mount Cook district. Several weeks were spent at the “Hermitage,” during which a good deal of mountaineering was done. Miss Elite Williams’ health has much benefited by the change.

Mr Wyndham Gray, who is a passenger to England by the Athenic, is a well-known polo player and sportsman in the Canterbury district. He was also one of those who took part in ths wire-jumping display before T.R.H. the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York on their recent visit. _

Mr William Fergusson, whose services are considered so valuable by the Wellington Harbour Board that they raised his salary from £lOOO to £1750 in order to retain him as secretary, has just gone to Australia on business connected with dredges for the Harbour Board.

At a sale of work and flower show held at Palmerston North, in aid of the funds of All Saints’ Church, some of the prize exhibits were particularly good. Miss Sibyl Abraham’s decorated rocking horse was a pretty and novel entry, Miss Fitzgerald showed a tastefully done bicycle. Mrs Buckley carried off the prize for scones, and Miss Preston took the honours in bread-making.

Major T. V. Shepherd, of Auckland, has been gazetted Sergeant-at-Arms of the House of • Representatives. Major Shepherd was formerly OfficerCommanding the Auckland Volunteer District, and is an old Indian officer. For some years past he has been engaged in farming pursuits in the Waikato and other districts South of Auckland

Major John Whitney, general manager of the Colonial Ammunition Company, Limited, arrived from Melbourne and Sydney on Sunday per s.s. Zealandia. It is probable he will only be able to make a short stay in New Zealand, as it is possible it may be necessary for him to leave for England at any moment on business connected with the company.

Our Waihi correspondent telegraphs that a complimentary smoke concert was tendered last week to Mr W. S. Phillips, Mayor of Waihi, by his committee and friends. The function took place at Meyer’s Hall. Mr P. McGregor presided. There was a good attendance. The usual toasts were duly honoured, and musical contributions were well received. Mr James McKerrow, who for so many years has occupied important positions in the Lands and Survey Department, was lately the recipient of a handsome gift on the occasion of his retiring from office. A large number of people assembled at the meeting, to bid farewell to Mr MeKerrow in his public capacity, and the presentation, which took the form of a very handsome carved bookcase, made of curly rimu. and ornamented with a silver plate, bearing a suitable inscription, as well as a massive office chair, also silvermounted, was witnessed with much interest. All contributions were of an entirely voluntary nature, and the subscribers numbered over 105.

The Acting-Premier and many of the Ministers were present at afternoon tea at the Bodega restaurant (Wellington) one day last week, in order to bid farewell to the New Zealand teachers who are going to South Africa to carry on educational work in the Boer concentration camps. Ten ladies from the North Island were present, including Misses Kenrick, and Devon (Auckland), Arrow (New Plymouth), Ferguson (Hawke’s Bay), Davis (Whngnnui), Hay (Marlborough), and Lad ley (Nelson), and Misses Parker and Webb (Wellington). Mr Walker, Minister for Education. made a suitable speech, and presented each teacher with a silver fern leaf brooch, bearing the letters N.Z. Gifts of books, pictures, and seta of games were also received. The party left by the Westralia, a large crowd assembling to see them off, and a salvo of rockets was fired from the ship as she left the wharf.
