Miss Grace Paul, wta has been on a visit to Wellington, has now returned to New PlymouthMiss J. Gray and her daughter, of New Plymouth, have been visiting friends in Christchurch and Wellington. Miss Burton, of Invercargill, is paying’ a visit to her sister, Mrs R. C. Hughes, of New Plymouth. Mr J. B. Connett, of New Plymouth, is on a visit to the hot Lakes District. Miss A. Cunningham has been spending a few weeks with her sister, Mrs Holford, of Wellington, but has now returned to New Plymouth. Mr C. A. Wilkinson, of Eltham, was entertained at a banquet on Monday last, prior to his leaving Taranaki on a trip round the world. Lieut. Okey, of New Plymouth, has left to join the Bisley team at Wellington, en route for London. The friends of Lieut. Lascelles, of the Third Dragoon Guards, will oe glad to hear’ that he is slowly recovering from his attack of mt eric fever at Harrismith. Mrs A. Davidson, of the Bluff Hill, Napier, is staying at Lake Taupo. Miss Connon is staying- with Mrs Todd, of the Bluff Hill, Napier. Mr and Mrs T. H. Lowry, of Okawa, Hawke’s Bay, have left for Auckland en route for England, via San Francisco. Bishop Stewart, of Persia, accompanied by Miss Stewart, intends leaving Napier shortly for England. Mr and Mrs W. Nelson, of Woodville, Hawke’s Bay, are leaving there for a trip to England. Miss Reid, of Opotiki, is at present on a visit to Mrs W. Erater, of Remnera, Auckland. The Hon. Colonel Pitt, of Nelson, passed through Auckland last week, with Miss Pitt, on their way to Rotorua, where Miss Pitt will remain for five weeks for the benefit of her health. Colonel Pitt returned to Nelson on Tuesday.

Dr. E- G. Levinge, Superintendent of the Sunnyside Asylum, Christchurch, is on a visit to New Plymouth.

Mr B. A. Hlgnett, a well-known settler of New Plymouth, has left for the Old Country, by way of Sydney, for the benefit of his health. Mr Reed, late chief clerk of the Railway Goods Department, New Plymouth, was presented on the eve of his departure to Dunedin with a handsome service of plate by Mr Day, on behalf of the staff and his commercial friends as a token of goodwill and esteem.

Colonel and Mrs. Goring have been spending some days in 'Wellington on their way home to Whangarei, after a round of visits among their friends in the South Island-

Sir Arthur Douglas, Major-General Babington and Captain Campbell have returned to Wellington after a flying visit to Christchurch, to see off the South Island Battalion of the Tenth Contingent.

Mrs. E. W. Alison and Miss Alison, of Lake Takapuna, Auckland, left by the Sierra on Tuesday for Sydney. They intend to be away about six weeks.

Miss Kenrick, of North Shore, Auckland, left by the Ngapuhi on Sunday, to take up the position as teacher in South Africa.

Mr and Mrs Sturt (nee Ledingliam) left for Suva by the Taviuni on Wednesday. A large number of friends assembled at the steamer to wish the happy couple bon voyage.

Mr and Mrs Sturt, sen., and daughter, who came up from Siiva to Auckland to be present at their son’s marriage, are now paying a visit to Sydney. They intend returning to Auckland to spend most of their visit, as thej- are so delighted with the climate and surroundings of the Northern city.

Dr. and Mrs. Pollen are busy settling into their new house in Boulcott street. Mrs. Pollen's sister, Miss M. Hunter-Brown, has come over from Nelson on a visit to her relatives. The Misses Pollen have not yet returned to Wellington, but. are expected back shortly.

Mr., Mrs. and Miss Hislop have gone South for a short time.

Mrs. Percy Browne (Rarotonga) passed through Wellington lately on her way to Auckland, where she will join the steamer for Rarotonga. Mrs. Browne has been spending some months in Dunedin with her people, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Graham, to benefit her health, which had suffered from the hot plimate of the islands. Mrs. and Miss Tolhurst are back in Wellington, after visiting friends in the South Island. Amqng passengers to London by the Paparoa are Mr., Mrs., and Miss Kebbell, Wellington; Mr. and Mrs. Callender, Timaru; Mr., Mrs. and Miss Duncan, Christchurch; Captain Orme-Webb, England. Colonel and Mrs. Owen, Wellington, have gone down to Christchurch for a trip. Mrs. Traverner, Rangitikei, who has been on a short visit to Wellington to see ner sister, Mrs. Brown, has returned home. By the last steamer for Montevideo Mr. Skerrett (Wellington), and Mr. Gaisford (Napier) left the colony in order to take up work in the Argentine. Mrs. E. Izard (Wellington) has gone to Dunedin for a lengthy stay. At a farewell “at home” given by Miss Gladys Somerville to her music pupils and their parents, advantage was taken of the occasion to present a silver card case to Miss Somerville as a mark of affection from her pupils. Dr. and Mrs. Cleghorn (Wanganui) are on a round of visits among friends in Blenheim, where they lived for some years prior to taking up their residence in the North Island. Miss Hyde has returned to Picton after a long’ stay with Mrs. Travers, • Lower Hutt, Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. Callender, Christchurch, who are passing- through Wellington, are staying with Mrs. A. Brandon, Hobson-street. Mrs George Graham, widow of the late Mr George Graham, and Miss Susij;. Graham, of Brighton, England, are at present on a visit to Auckland, and are staying at Mrs Garrett's, “Fernleigh,” Symonds-street. Mrs and Miss Graham have done all the Southern Lake tours and Rotorua. They intend leaving Auckland in about a fortnight for Home, via Sydney. The Countess Riaz was a regular Bonanza while she stayed in New Zealand. She spent no less than £3OOO during the three months she was in the colony, and left an order with the Maori carvers at Rotorua to make her a carved Maori house. It is to cost between £3OO and £4OO. and when finished is to be sent to her London address.

Pera Kiwi, a chief of the Tainui tribe, residing at Te Kopua, Raglan, died recently. He held a large share in the. Akau block, and was a most intelligent native, taking great interest in educational matters, sending his children regularly .to the Raglan district school, and using his influence to get other natives to do the same. Since his decease a very large tangi has been held, natives arriving from all parts. He was interred at the top of the Kopua Hill, adjoining the Raglan pilot station, and overlooking the sea, a very large gathering of natives and Europeans being present.
