The Misses Henry left Wellington by the Rimtttaka for a lengthy visit to their relations in the Old Country. Mrs. Biss, Wellington, has returned fruju a trip to Auckland. The Misses Fitzherbert. Wellington, have gone away for a few weeks in the country. Mrs. Seccombe and Mr. F. Seccombe are stopping at Waiwera, which is very full just now, a large number of visitors arriving weekly from Auckland and from the South. The Rev. W. C. Waters, of St. Peter's, Wellington, is spending a holiday in Nelson. The Chief Justice and Lady Stout have been visiting Wanganui, where they "did” the extended river trip, going above Pipiriki. Mr. E. Wylie, of Wellington, a wellknown footballer, has gone to reside in Palmerston. The Hon. Mr. Dunean. Minister of Lands, is visiting Nelson for the Takaka show, and then goes on to the West Coast and Cheviot districts. Mr. and Mrs. Barltrop. of Christchurch. and Miss Andrews, of the same city, are visiting Waivvera. Mr. and Mrs. H. Lloyd Brett returned home tins week after a fewdays at Waiwera. Mr. and Mrs. G. Buckley (Christchurch) and their daughter are going Home by the Rimntaka. The Misses Henry are passengers by the same ship. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson (of the firm of Aitken and Wilson) are leaving for a trip to England shortly, returning to Wellington by the end of the year. Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Thomas have returned to .Auckland after their honeymoon, and have temporarily settled down at “Clovelly,” Symondsstreet. Mr and Mrs Embling. of Wellington. are staying in Nelson. Mrs. Cunningham. Christchurch, is at present at Miss Turner's, “Fassifern,” Papanui Road. It is probable she will visit England shortly. Mr. and Mrs. V. Hargreaves, Merivale. have spent a pleasant fortnight with Mr. and Mrs. P. Cunningham, Pleasant Point. Mrs. Cunningham also spent Christmas there. The Rev. Mr. Woodthorpe. of Ashburton, has been appointed vicar of St. John's. Latimer Square. Christchurch. in the place of the late Rev. H. G. M. Watson. Mr«. Burnes (Wellington) and her children are in Dunedin, staying with Mrs. McNeill, Monticelle. Mi«s Richmond (Wellington) is visiting friends in the South Island. Mr. and Mrs. Judah Myers and their daughter are leaving for England by the North German Lloyd line. Mr. Myers was in Loudon at the time of Queen Victoria's Coronation, and witnessed some of the festivities. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brown arc in Wellington staying with Mr. W. R. E. Brown, in Tinakori Road. They intend going to England very shortly. Dr. Boor, who has lately returned to New Zealand from England, is at present spending a few days in Nelson with his daughter. Miss Mabel Rochfort, of Wellington Hospital, is spending a short holiday with her people in Nelson. Mr H. McCabe, of Nelson, was vert successful in the cycle sports at Westport last week. He won the one mile open race, the three mile championship. and two miles points raeand was second in two other events.’ Mrs. Proctor, of New Plymouth, is visiting Auckland. Mrs. Whitaker, of Hawera. is m Auckland on a visit, staving at the Central Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Ledingham and Miss Ledingham were amongst last week's visitors at Waiwera. Among the Rimutaka’s passengers for England were some from Christchurch, Mrs. George Hall and Miss Buchanan. Mr*. 11. R. and Miss Webb are staying at New Brighton. Mrs. J. C. Palmer is at Sumner, the Misses Meares have gone to the Otira Gorge, and numbers of people are out of Christchurch for a short holiday. Miss Fairhurst and Mrs. R. Mrs. Elworthy, who has just returned from England. has taken their house on the Papanui Road. Mr and Mrs John Ross, of Dunedin, Miss Ross, Mr Fred. Ross, and Mr G. S. Ross are on a visit to Waiwera. Mr Ross's health continues to improve. Mrs Palmer, of Dunedin, and her son were in Auckland last week at the Star Hotel, but subsequently went on to Waiwera. Mr Percy Smith of Pine Island, was staying at the Star Hotel last week. Mr M. Henry, of Palmerston North, was in Auckland last week. Miss Turner, who was for some years nnrse and sister in the Christchurch Hospital, returned last Friday after several months’ holiday in Australia. Mrs aud Miss Browne (England), who have been staying with Mrs Stowe, are on their way to the Hot Lakes District via Auckland. Mr Chas. Pringle, with a son and daughter, are. visiting Waivvera, but shortly return to Wellington. The Misses Harvey (2), Of Woodville, aud Miss E. Owen of the same place have been visiting Waivvera this week. Mrs Higginson has returned from Blenheim, where she has been visiting Mrs Tilley. Sir Kenneth Douglas has been spending the holidays at Nelson and Picton. Miss Hill (Christchurch) hits gone on a visit to Mrs. - Westmacott, Oninarn. * Mr. J. W. Joynt, Registrar -of the New Zealand L’niversity, who has been to Australia on a holiday, has returned to Wellington. Mr, Colin McAffer, whose prowess on the -walking track is well known, having been champion last year, will shortly be in Auckland again. Paton have returned from their honeymoon trip to take up their residence at New Plymouth. Mr and Mrs F. E. Siddall from England have arrived in New Plymouth, and intend making a stay for some time in Taranaki. Mr and Mrs Hutchen have returned to New Plymouth from their honeymoon. Dr. Walker’s second sister. Miss Amy Walker, has arrived from the Old Country on a visit to her relatives in New Plymouth. Mr. George Gaudin. of the “New Zealand Times.” has been the recipient of a handsome presentation from the combined staffs of that paper, the occasion being his approaching marriage, which was to take place on this present Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Brechenridge and Mr. F. and Miss Brechenridge. of Newcastle, have been in Auckland for a week, at the Albert Hotel, and went to Rotorua on Monday. Knell, who has resided in Greytown for twenty years, and occupied a position in the Bank of New Zealand there, has been promoted to Napier. Mr. and Mrs. Lowry visited Rotorna on their way back to Nayiier after the holidays iu Auckland. Mr. Rapley, of Te Puke, is at the Grand Hotel, Rotorua. The Rev. Charles Connor and Mrs Connor, late of Napier, celebrated their golden wedding at Akaroa on January 2nd at the residence of Mrs Morrison, their daughter. Forty years of their married life have been spent in New Zealand, where they have innumerable friends, both in the North and South Islands. Miss Kathleen Hoadley, of Napier, has gone to stay with Mrs Stedman, at Maraetara. Miss Flossie Morecroft has just returned from there. Mr C. D. Blakiston, of Danncvirke, who is leaving with the Eighth Contingent, was presented with a handsome travelling bag at the Cmutaoroa Hall on Thursday last. Professor and Mrs Wall, Christchurch, have gone to Australia on a visit. Mr and Mrs Westall, and Mr and Mrs Dickin, of Napier, have been spending their New Year holidays at Makotuku. Mrs and the Misses Margoliouth, of Milton. Terrace, Napier, have gone for a trip to Nuhaka. Mrs Keesing, who has been living at the Masonic Hotel, Napier, for the past three months, is staying in the country. Dr. Laishley, who has been laid up ill for some weeks past, but is now somewhat better, left by mail steamer Sonoma on Monday last during this week for a few weeks* change in Sydney, where his daughters and sisters reside.

Mr ■H. P. and the Misses Murray•Aynsley returned to Christchurch from England on Thursday after a seven months' trip. Their homecoming was a very sad one. Miss Murray-Ay nsley. who remained behind iti their pretty home, “Riverlaw," Opawa. died a week or two before her father and sisters arrived.

A very large number of people attended the fareweH social to the Rev. Father Goggan, who is leaving Wellington for Napier. The Rev. Father was the recipient of an illuminated address and a purse of sovereign.* from the parishioners of Te Aro. and the members of the Marist Old Boys' Association presented him with a portmanteau bearing an inscribed silver plate, a silver snuffbox. and a scarf. In reply to numerous felicitous speeches Father Goggan thanked everyone for their generous gifts and assured him of his warm affection for his parishioners and his regret in leaving them. After the presentations and speeches were over, refreshments were served and music and dancing Indulged in to a late hour.

Mr Ismay, of the world-famous flrm of Ismay. Imrie and Co., of the White Star line, with Miss Ismay, were in Auckland last week, staying at Mr Itolleston's Central Hotel. Mr Ismay was accompanied by Mr Geoffrey Drage, -who was also at the Central. Mr Ismay is the possessor of one of the most magnificent modern residences in the world at his estate. Thurstaston. in Cheshire, and is a great philanthropist. Mr Geoffrey Drage, who was from 1895 to 1900. member for Derby in the House of Commons. is an M.A. of Oxford, and a barrister of Lincoln's Inn and the Middle Temple. From 1391-1894 he was secretary of the Royal Commission on Labour.and in that capacity visited many European countries and the United States. Tn 1894 he was elected a vice-president- of the International Congress on Accidents at Milan. In 1897 he was a member of the International Congress on the Housing of the Working Classes, at Brussels, and in 190<‘> of the Congress on Poor T.aw and Charity, at Paris. Mr Drage has published many works on questions affecting labour and the poor.
