The New Zealand Amateur Golf Championship Meeting at Auckland

THE CHAMPIONSHIP. THIRD ROUND. The third round of the championship was played on Tuesday afternoon. There was nothing- on for the morning, which was generally regretted by the competitors, as it was perfect golfing weather. The most interesting match of the third round was the meeting of the Messrs Gillies. It was well known that Mr Harry Gillies was not quite satisfied with the result of their last meeting, and that he meant to go for the match from the start. I have rarely seen a match played where it was so evident that a player meant to win. He played with absolute confidence, h’s driving being good, and some of his mashie shots simply perfect. His golf for the out journey was perfect, as his score of 39 will show, and ho started for home four up. Jacob’s Ladder was halved in 3, and the Pah in 4. Mr C. Gillies won the 12th in 4. his brother taking 6. Mr C. Gillies won the amphitheatre in 4, and the game stood: Mr H. Gillies 2 up and 5 to go. The Bluegums was halved in

5. At the 15th Mr C. Gillies holed a very go<«l putt, and his brother failing on a much easier one, lost the hole, leaving him 1 up and 3 to play. The 16th looked like a certain half, but Mr C. Gillies again missed an easy putt and lost the hole, his brother now being dormy 2. He thus only wanted a half to win, but on the l~th green he was a little too anxious and over-ran the hole, and as Mr C. Gillies had an almost certain putt, it looked like all square and 1 to go, but again he failed on his putt, and his brother won by 2 up and 1 to play. The winner played a good all-round game, but had his brother’s putting not been so bad he could not have won. Some of the putts missed an ordinary player would have to try to miss to keep them clear of the hole. Mr Gillies informs me that he is still suffering from the affection of the wrist, which troubled him when in Australia. 1 hope it may not become chronic, as it must be very distressing- to reach the green by perfect play, only to feel that you cannot play your shot with any certaintv. Although the better man on the day won. 1 should have liked to see Mr C. Gillies fight the championship out with Mr A. Duncan, as although 1 should have pinned my faith to DunFor continuation see " Golf Notes.”
