The Countess of Ranfwrly entertained a very large number of ladies and gentlemen at an “At Home" last week. The function was brilliantly successfol. and was favotzred with beautiful weather. Dr. Buchanan, of Melbourne, is at present in Auckland. Mr Shanks, of Christchurch, paid a visit to Auckland this weekMr A. F. Hall, of England's on a visit to this colony. Mr J. T. Trotter, of London, is paying a visit to Auckland. Mr Steele, of Wellington. was in Auckland at the beginning of this week. Miss Cotter-Hi (Christchurch) is Staying in Wellington with Mrs. Turrell. Mrs. H. It. Webb and Mr. S. Webb TChiist.-hurchJ have been visiting Hanmer Springs. The Rev. Mr and Mrs Erwin, of Cambridge, are spending their honeymoon in Auckland. Mrs Manton. who has been visiting her relatives in Ponsonby. Auckland, returned to Wellington on Thursday. Mr Turrull. of Melbourne, who is visiting New Zealand, was this week in Auckland. Mr E J. Herrick, of Hawke's Bay. is also on a visit to the Northern capital. Mrs. Wilson, of Palmerston North, has been for a short visit to Napier for the golf tournament. Mr Haybittie. of Wellington, is at present in Auckland, and is putting up at the Star. Mrs. I>arniC‘«at. of Wanganui, has been staying in Napier, and taking part in the golf tournament there. Mrs. Phillips, of Christchurch, has been visiting Napier and Palmerston North.

Mr J. C. Chadwick, of New York is one of the recent visitors from the other side of the Pacific. Mrs. Heaton Rhodes has returned to her session residence in Wellington After her visit to Australia.

The Rev. W. A. Phillip, of Melbourne, is on a visit to this colony, and is stopping at the Central Hotel, Auckland. Mr D. S. Dawson, of the well known £nn of Stewart Dawson and Co_ is on a visit to th- colony, and was in Auckland last week. Mr and Mrs R. Alien. of Nelson, who have hern stopping at the Albert Hotel. Auckland, for about a fortnight. expect to ret ore South at the end of the present week.

Miss Dodson, of Pbnsonby. Auckland. has gr-ne to Wellington on a visit to her sister. Mrs Furby. until November, when her marriage will take place in Wellington.

Mens, and Aladame Dario S-ve greatly enjoyed their visit to Auckland, with which city they profess themselves charmed. They have been stepping at the CentraL Trooper Henry Draper, of the Fc-nrth Contingent, has returned to his Auckland home convalescent. The Progressive Euchre in comsection with the Auckland Lawn Tennis Ciub takes place in Mrs Sowerby’s Hal! on Thursday. 19th September, and promises to be as successful as its predecessors.

Archbishop Redwood, accompanied by the Her. Father Mahony, are touring the Mariborottgh and Kaikoura districts, with the object of raising funds for building the Roman Catholic Cathedral in Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Shanks. C'-rist-ehureh. are at Hanmer Springs for a long visit. Mr. Shanks ha< been 3 victim to infiuenza. whiea has left complications, and the doctor has ordered complete rest and change. The popular guard. Mr Leighton, of the Auckland District, has been removed to Whangarei. He was last week the recipient of a handsome presentation from his fellow employees. Miss Keesing. of Auckland, who has for some time taught at the Bombay school, and who is now transferred to Cambridge, was last week presented with a writing de>k from her late pupils ss a mark of their regard. Mr J. Henry, of the Sonth British Insurance Co_ Auckland, has been moved to Calcutta. Prior to his. departure on Monday Mr Henry was ertertained at luncheon by several friends, ami presented with a handsome case of cigar and cigarette holders as a memento of their goodwill. Mr. N. Miller, dental surgeon, who has been on a short trip to Wellington. has now returned to New Plymouth. bringing with him his new partner. Dr. R. V. Cleveland. D.D.S.. Chicago. 1.5. A., who graduated at the Chicago College of Dental Surgery, where for the past four years he has held the position of chief demonstrator.

Before his departure from Napier to take up his residence at Hawera. a presentation was made to Mr. G. H. Swan by his employees, amongst whom he was very much esteemed, and Mrs. Swan was also presented with a memento by Mr. Cox. who represented the "White Swan Baths." Both Mr. and Mrs. Swan have made many friends during the many years that ihey have resided in Napier, and will be greatly missed by all members of the community.
