Dear Bee, August 21. So much has been crammed into one week, and the town has been so full of visitors, that one feels a little dazed after it all; but it has been a delightfully giddy time; it is astonishing how much dissipation one can stand. After the football match the Christ’s College Old Boys’ gave a dance in the Canterbury Hall, at which the visitors were present, and a most enjoyable time was spent, Messrs W. A. Day, C. M. Ollivier, M. Denniston, and G. Pascoe working hard for the success of it. The chaperons were Mesdames Denniston, J. Anderson and Denham. Mrs Harris being prevented through sickness in the family. Mrs Denniston wore black silk and sequin trimming, relieved with white lace; Mrs Anderson, black evening gown; Mrs Denham, black satin; Miss Helen Denniston (debutante), lovely gown of white silk and chiffon, and carried a loveiy bouquet; Miss Fay Mathias (debutante), pretty white silk and pearl passementerie; Miss M. Bullock, pale green silk and lace bolero; Miss M. Anderson, black chiffon and silver sequins; Miss Gladys Anderson looked sweet in white silk and lace; Miss Wilding wore white; MiAt Denham, white muslin and lace, relieved with pale blue; Miss E. Denham, white, finished with cerise; Miss M. Barker, black, with pearl trimming; Miss Prins, rose silk, finished with chiffon; Miss Bullock, a lovely frock of pink and white brocade; Miss Mabel Allan was charming in white silk and chiffon; Miss Harman, black and pink flowers; Miss Merton, white satin and lovely Maltese lace; Misses Charlewood, Greenfield (Wellington), greaves, E. Hill, Inman (2), Kitson, Dobson, Cook, Campbell (2), Messrs Bourne, Aitken, Harman, Martin, Williams, Flower, Collins, Blunden, Barker, Gibson, Fryer, Denham, Dr. R. Anderson, Judge Denniston, were only some of those present. On Wednesday a perfect ball was given by the Hunt Club in the Canterbury Hail. The dancing hall was used for dancing, another small hall as a drawingroom, and the_supper up-

■fairs. The decorations were beautiful ; the corridors and stairs were made most attractive. The draping* were of green and red, with quantity** of palms, and the trailing lycopodium. Miss Scrivenor's music was delightful to dance to, and to add to the brilliance of the gathering some .of the officers of the HAf.s. Archer were present. Some lovely gowns were noticeable, amongst them being Mrs T. L. Cowlishaw in her bridal gown of white satin and mousseline de soie; Mrs Frank Courage looked very sweet in her bridal gown of white satin and chiffon; Mrs Duncan Cameron (Methven) very handsome pale green brocade; Mrs Arthur Elworthy (Pareora), lovely gown of cream satin, veiled in lace; Mrs Jameson (Timaru), beautiful yellow satin gown; Mrs Woodroffe, cream lace over satin, pearl necklace, and a rosette with long ends of crimson chiffon (the distinguishing badge of the lady members of the club); Mrs C. Dalgety, white brocade, with heliotrope velvet and violets, and beautiful diamond ornaments; Mrs Hawkes, handsome white satin and silver costume; Mrs Pyne, pink brocade and chiffon; Mrs G. A. M. Buckley, pale grey brocade; Mrs G. Gonld, white mousseline de soie, with gold embroideries; Miss A. Archer), lovely wbjite lace gown; Mrs Lewin, black satin and lace; Mrs J. Grigg, white, with touches of black; Miss Grigg, white chiffon gown, with black frills; Misses Courage (2), white silk, relieved with blue; Miss H. Denniston, white satin; Misses M. Anderson, Jameson, Burnett, Lean, Gossett, Hill, Bullock, WiJson, Inman, Campbell, Afiatbias, Newton, Harper, Murray, Murchison, Mesdames Murchison, Gibson) (Ashburton), Mcßae (North Canterbury), Knight, _W. Buckley, Heslop (Geraldine), and H. Wood, were only some of the many present.

On Wednesday evening a welcome home had been organised for .Bishop Grimes, who had been absent from his diocese for about three months, and a most enjoyable time was anticipated; but, alas’ (owing to adverse weather in the country) everyone was present at the Art Gallery except the guest of the evening, who arrived in Christchurch somewhere

about four the next morning. On Thursday evening another ball (this time a military one) was given by the officers, who left no stone unturned to make it a success, especially Captain Lewin. It was held in the same rooms as the Hunt “Club, so the decorations were largely the same. The official set to open the ball was comprised of the Commandant, Colonel Pole-Penton, and Mrs Lewis, Lieut.-Colonel Slater and Mrs Bingley, Commander Rolleaton (H.M.s. Archer) and Mrs G. A. M. Buckley, Major Day and Mrs Snow, Lieut. Lewis (H.M.s. Archer) and Mrs Lewin, Capt. Bingley and Miss Slater, Captain Chaffey and Miss Denham, Captain Snow and Miss Palairet. Mrs G. A. M. Buckley wore a handsome black satin; Mrs Lewis, pale blue patin, with touches of pink velvet, finished with white chiffon; Mrs Bingley, rich white brocade; Mrs Snow, black satin relieved with white; Mrs A. Elworthy, lovely pink and white brocade; Miss Julius, white satin; Miss Slater, blue silk; Miss Palairet, white satin; Mrs W. Mcßae, handsome white broeade; Mrs Woodroffe, very pretty black and white costtime; Mrs H. D. Buchanan, white satin and lace, yellow flowers; Mrs G. E. Rhodes, very handsome ■white brocade, and lovely diamonds; Miss Wilder wore blue and white; Mrs Frank Courage, handsome black satin; Mrs J. C.' Palmer, pale pink satin and chiffon; Mrs Lewin, black satin; Miss Earle, pink mousseline de soie and lace insertion; Misses Irene Wilson, Symes, Graham, Lean, Prins, Anderson, Rolleston, Lewin. Denniston, Grigg. Mesdames Dampier-Cross-ley, Cobham, Donald, Wardrop, Barker, Macfarlane, Lance, Captains Lindsay, Millton, Palairet, Buckley, - Donald, Surgeons Palmer, Anderson, and Thomas, several officers of H.M.s. Archer, Messrs Duncan, Cameron, Starkey, Wardrop, Cobham, Williams, Cholmondeley, Symes, Curnow, Turrell, Da m pier-Crossley, Lawrence, Harper, and many others were present. On Friday evening the Savage Club

entertained the “wahines” at the Art Gallery, and, as usual, were very successful, the great charm of their entertainments being their originality. A dainty supper was provided, and a short dance followed. Sir George Clifford was duly installed as chief for another year, and among those present were Lady Clifford, in black evening dress and handsome red opera cloak; Mrs Arthur Elworthy, white brocade; Mrs Julius, black velvet, crimson plush opera coat; Miss Julius,, white satin; Mrs Bourne, black satin; Mrs MeredithKaye, black satin; Mrs G. Rhodes' (Bluecliffs), black satin and sequin trimming, lovely white opera wrap; Mrs Lewin, black satin; Mrs T. W. Stringer, a lovely gown of white silk and silver sequin net; Miss Fairhurst, black velvet and white lace; Mrs H. Quane, black satin and silver sequin net; Mrs (Dr.) Thomas, black satin, white lace fichu; Mrs (Dr.) Jennings, handsome velvet gown, long grey * cloak; Miss Graham, white silk, pearl and crystal trimming; Mesdames Kinross White (Napier), G. P. Williams, S. Gordon, Roper, Marciel, Misses Way, Haydon, Denniston, Williams, Lean, Fodor, Merton, and many others.

A charming afternoon, which took the form of a Ping Pong party, was given by the Misses Hargreaves on Wednesday in honour of the Misses Greenfield, of Blenheim, who are staying with them, and as a farewell to Mrs W. H. Derry, who shortly returns to Wellington. Among those invited were Mesdames B. Hargreaves, K. Garrick, D. Matson, J. Fairhurst, D. Wood, Davidson, Waymouth. T. Garrard, R. Anderson, W. H. Derry, the Misses Wilson (2). Way (2), Waymouth, K. Wood, Deamer, Grant, Fairhurst, G. Trent, Thomas, Ross, Graham, Marsden, and Turner. Delicious afternoon tea and cakes, and all kinds of home-made sweets were served. Two Ping Pong tables were kept in use, and some very pleasant music varied the afternoon.
