A Brilliant Function.

STRANGE AND COMPANY’S SOCIAL.

One of the most enjoyable socials that has ever eventuated In Christchurch took place on Thursday night, 23rd inst., at Canterbury Hall, Exhibition Buildings. On this occasion the hosts were Strange and Co., and the guests the employees of the house, so.;ie 500 in number, together with their friends and relatives. Some 1500 persons assembled in all. and Arthur Rhodes, Esq., Mayor of Christchurch, presided. In opening the proceedings the chairman made a brief speech, referring to the founding of the firm, nearly 40 years ago. by Mt Strange, anti its reconstruction in 1894, when Mr Coverdale had been admitted as a full partner, and assumed control of the business. The progress, remarked Mr Rhodes, made by the firm since that period had been phenomenal, and this was mainly owing to the energy and enterprise exhibited by Mr Coverdale. Reference was then made to the numerous branches which had been added to the business, and to the industries introduced by the firm, giving employment to a very large number of people (upwards of 500), and not only doing good to the place in this way, but assisting largely to develop the resources of the country. The chairman was glad the firm had received the order to furnish the Royal residences. A firm which employed so much labour and did so much to foster local industries, deserved well of the community, and it was satisfactory to find such good wages were paid to the employees. He also referred with regret to the unavoidable absence of Mr Strange, who was detained at Ashburton. A most enjoyable concert followed, to which the best available professional talent contributed, while other items were given by various members of the staff of Messrs. Strange and Co. The supper (a most recherche one) was supplied by Buggey, and Fox’s string band discoursed sweet music, to the strains of which some 500 couples danced tall 4 a.m., when hearty cheers were given for Messrs. Strange and Co., and also for Mr and Mrs Coverd'ale, and the large gathering dispersed. The gathering marks in a most pleasing way the friendly feelings which in a well-conducted firm may exist between employers and employees.
