AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, December 18. I have never known our climate quite so changeable as it is this year. Surely a hostess who fixed on a Saturday in December for a garden party and at home has a right to expect a perfect summer day. All of us were terribly disappointed on Saturday last when it turned out an almost malignantly wet and blustering day for MRS DILLINGHAM’S AT HOME IN HONOUR OF THE ABARENDA’S OFFICERS.

The wife of our most popular American Consul is a great social favourite, and therefore in spite of rain, wind and storm, the majority of the invited guests availed themselves of her hospitality. Owing- to the indefatigable efforts of the hostess, in which she was most ably assisted by her husband, the reception was one of the most brilliant and successful events of the present season. The large reception rooms and pretty hall were tastefully decorated for the occasion, and a large band played a most excellent selection of music during the afternoon. The arrival of Commander Tilley. Commandant of the U.S. Naval Station at Tortulla, was signalled by the playing of the “Star Spangled Banner.” All greatly enjoyed the quaint and graceful dancing of two Samoan ladies of rank. Pua. and Tuluee, daughter and niece of Faii Vae. a Tutuila chief who came up to Auckland in the Abarenda. Refreshments were served during the afternoon, « feature being the ices, which were of unusual excellence. On the departure of the guests the band played the English National Anthem.

MISSION OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD GARDEN FETE. At this bright season of the year, when we are, one and all, looking forward to the pleasures of the holiday season, it is well that we recognise the claims of our poorer brethren who are. not so circumstanced as we ourselves are. That many of us do think of the needy around us is instanced by the hearty support given to any entertainment having for its object the raising of funds for the relief of distress. This was well demonstrated by the large gathering of over 500 who attended the garden fete in the Government House grounds in aid of the funds of the Mission of the Good Shepherd, an institution largely supported by our Anglican brethren. His Excellency the Governor, Lord Ranfurly, kindly placed the grounds at the disposal of the Mission, a concession much appreciated by those interested. His Lordship the Bishop. Dr. Cowie, graced the asemblage with his presence. Quite a number of little ones trained by Misses Winnie Dudley and Nellie Kissling performed a very pleasing Maypole dance on the lawn, while Master Henning gave exhibitions of several trick acts on the bicycle. Mr G. Henning also had his motor cycle on view. In the competition for decorated bicycles Miss Aiekin got first place, while Misses Flossie and E. P. Pierce tied for second. The decorations were entirely in yellow, yellow silk arranged down the centre, and daisies of every' shade, from palest cream to deepest yellow, being the flowers used.
