POLO.

Ou Wednesday ami Saturday last the members of the Auckland Polo t'lub played a nuinlier of scratch matches at Buckland’s paddock, the usual place of play. Potter’s Paddock, being in the temporary occupation of the Trotting "Club. The players present were: Elliot. Wynyard. C. E. Purchas. Burns. Simpson. O’Rorke, Ixtckhurt, Lloyd. Tanks, and Drs. Purchas and McGuinness. Players were glad to see Mr E. D. O’Rorke. who arrived from the South last week, once more among them. He was mounted on Cheroot, a pony who carries his twenty-two years most marvellously, and is a testimony to the care that has been taken of him. Uheroot’s soundness and agility rather contradict the impression that |x»lo is a. particularly rough game on the horses. Among lose present Lockhart, who did not play last season, was in extra good form. Dr. Purchas also played a smart game. The great want is more training for the ponies, which are nearly all quite new to the work, and difficult to manage. The club has arranged to play the Cambridge Polo Club about the end of January on the latter’s ground, and it is hoped the Cambridge men will eome to town to play a. return match. The Australian polo team which is coming to New Zealand, will make its headquarters at Palmerston North, and will play the local club. Wanganui, Rangitikei. and Hawke’s Bay. The other week the members of the Christchurch Polo Club had the honour of having Banjo Paterson to’play with them. Mr Paterson was in very good form considering that, he had not. played for two years. The members of the Auckland Club will meet every Saturday in Potter’s Paddock. Epsom, during the season. Afternoon tea will be provided, and the club will be most pleased to see as many visitors present as can come.
