SETTLER'S PECULIAR DISABLEMENT.
INJURED BY A PICK HANDLE. • • Picking my way from the township of Toongabbie (Vic.) one bright morning through paddocks and over fences (says a reporter of the “Maffra Spectator”) I came in sight of a lithe, active old man busy clearing. Engaging him in conversation he said that notwithstanding his 61 years he was quite capable of doing his work. “But mind you.” said he. “such was not. always the case.” and in response to further inquiries he said: “My name is Charles Henry- Gales, and I have lived in Toongabbie for 31 years. Owing to a blow from a pick handle in 1898 a pain attacked me in the groin. Then came sharp shooting pains, and a continuous ache, which grew worse when I raised my leg or stooped. I found .1 was a victim to ‘sciatica. F<Jur mouths later
