AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, November 6. ST. GEORGE’S ROWING CLUB’S ANNUAL “AT HOME” took place on Saturday afternoon last at Judge's Bay, Parnell. There was, as usual, a great crowd of visitors, and the strong contingent of pretty girls was a marked feature. A band was in attendance, and took up their position on a dais of heaped sand, spread with a sail. It was a magnificent day, the sky and sea both being exquisitely blue. The tide was in, the sea calm, so the nfagnificent view of the gulf was seen to its fullest advantage. A picture of more absolute beauty could not be imagined. The beach itself, with Mrs Street’s lovely grounds rising behind, and Dr. Campbell’s Point to the left, were brilliant with colour, the ladies’ dresses being bright and variegated, while the yachts, still on their winter “slips,” but all ready for the summer launching, and in all • the glory of new paint, were gay - with bunting. The bay was dotted over with tiny pleasure craft and racing boats, while a small oil launch rushed hither and thither in the absurdly important manner characteristic of these boats. The North Shore smiled brilliantly in the sunlight, and Rangitoto, in purple splendour, seemed standing sentinel over, it all. The groupings on the beach, too, seemed to arrange themselves' very happily from a pictorial point of view, the bright costumes of the ladies, and the bright red parasols giving just' beautiful patches of brilliancy to the scene. Mrs Street, with her usual kindness, allowed the visitors the use of her property overlooking the bay, where afternoon tea was dispensed by the members of the Club in their usual efficient manner. The social proved a most brilliant success, and will long be remembered by- t li.os who were present, Fully 600 persons availed themselves of the club's invitation. Most elaborate preparations had been made for this important function, and the result must be gratify ing to the members of the committee, .who reallyworked like Trojans to make a success of the affair. The interior of the hall was artistically decorated with palms, tree ferns ami other greenery, and lavishly- hung with bunting. On one side of the hall were the initials “P.H.C..” while on the opposite side was “Ralph” in floral emblems, each bringing out distinctly the patriotic colours of red. white and blue. In the ante-rooms games and other forms of amusement were in progress. A programme of sixteen items occupied the attention of the assemblage, and dancing- was entered into with spirit till shortly- after two o'etoek. Meredith’s string orchestra supplied the music. Musical items as follows interspersed the dancing programme: — Songs, Mr Tom Schnackenberg, Miss Marienne Taylor, Messrs W. Airey and Fred.. Yonge; recitation, Miss AmyTaylor: while Mrs Fred. Yonge delighted her audience with a whistling solo. Mr Carminer made a most able and efficient M.C., and the excellent manner in which he introduced one to another was much appreciated. Mr Somers undertook the onerous duties of distributing the programmes and pencils, which duty he admirably fulfilled to the satisfaction of the numerous guests; in fact, the committee, as well as the Master, Mr Ralph, used every- endeavour to promote a pleasant reunion. The Masonic Hall, on the opposite side of the road, was used for supper, the catering, which was solely in the hands of the lady members, proved a distinct credit to them, being laid in the ball on three long tables f.or a substantial sit down supper of oysters, turkeys, hams, chickens, trifles and sweets in a bountiful supply. The tables were exquisitelydecorated by Miss Grey, being adorned with arches and pillars decorated with flowers and maiden hair ferns. In the ante-rooms supper was also similarly laid, where the principal male portion of the farmers were entertained by the committee. Speeches; were given by various of the farmers. Messrs McGee and Fitzpatrick made reference to the progress of the club and the excellent work done in its interests by the huntsman (Mr Selby) and the secretary (Mr R. P. Kinloch), whose remarks were endorsed unanimously. A feature of the evening- was the presentation by the Master (Mr J. G. Ralph) of the bracelet won byMiss Stribley in the Point-to-point Steeplechase, run on the concluding, day of the season at Sylvia Park. The bracelet was a handtome gold one presented by the Hunt Club.
